Chapter 342: Chapter 340 ’Heaven’_1

Urgh...

The little boy whose mouth was suddenly covered by a woman began to struggle, but after a few futile attempts, he realized he was no match for an adult. He soon gave up with a look of discontent as tears welled up in his eyes, fixing his gaze on the distant unreachable "heaven".

The firework display in the night sky was truly beautiful. Especially during the post-apocalyptic era, countless people stared at the fleeting fireworks with awe. It had been such a long time since they had seen a spectacle like this.

They wanted to cheer, but they dared not make a sound, fearing they could attract zombies and subsequently be torn into pieces and consumed.

They did not know who was behind the fireworks, but looking at their intensity, they guessed there must be many of them. Were these individuals tired of living, setting off fireworks so recklessly?

Do they value their lives so little? Perhaps, they too could set aside their fears of death and enjoy the moment, disregarding zombies and danger for a while!

Many people thought along these lines, but dared not put it into action. They had survived for so long, their lives were precious. They struggled to get to where they were; they couldn’t bear the thought of throwing it away, nor did they dare to risk their lives.

Death could be quick. One could say goodbye to this desolate world and simply leave. But death was also excruciatingly painful. They hadn’t experienced it before, but they knew how painful being slashed with sharp weapons or being clubbed could be. Death would possibly be worse; they were afraid of pain.

That is why they always strived to survive. After all, a survival devoid of any hopes is meaningless.

The problem was, every surviving person harbored hope. The purpose of their survival was to transform into a new-in-kind human, to enjoy the things they were deprived of in the past.

This hope, which had both destroyed them and allowed them to survive like cockroaches, was all they had.

Once she noticed her son had stopped making noises, the woman sighed in relief. Only then did she release his mouth and look towards the sky, watching the firework blossom with a complicated look in her eyes.

If not for the knowledge of this being the post-apocalyptic world, she might have mistaken it for the peaceful society of the past, where they would be having Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner and be engaged in joyful conversations with family.

This used to be within their reach, but now, it was the most unattainable luxury!

Thinking about the past made tears well up in the woman’s eyes. Only heaven knew how much she had suffered in this post-apocalyptic world, struggling to stay alive, and fighting for her son’s survival.

Her hands involuntarily held her son tighter. She was about to say some comforting words to him, but suddenly, a hand forcefully grabbed her by the collar and dragged her backwards.

The woman was utterly shocked. She quickly let go of her son to ensure that he didn’t get hurt and looked around to identify the person behind her.

The culprit was a filthy, skeleton-thin man whom she recognized as a fellow survivor, with no special abilities, waiting around for death just like her.

She wanted to resist but she knew she couldn’t win the fight. For a man so emaciated, bordering on disease, he was clearly tormented by hunger. Wrapped in newspapers, with a neck covered in thick layers of dirt, he emitted a nauseating stench.

The woman was not in a much better state. Her shrunken breasts and skinny body looked almost inhuman. She wore a thin cotton jacket with cotton tufts falling off, shivering in the cold - even a newspaper would have provided better insulation.

"What do you want to do?" She asked in terror, sparing a glance at her stunned son.

"I’m freezing. What do you think I want?"

The man snarled as he climbed onto her.

The woman struggled a few times, then resigned herself to the inevitable. She turned her head with a look of despair and resentment.

What she saw when she turned was a person lying down – waxy complexion, severely sunken cheeks, eyes closed, without the slightest sign of breathing. He was not sleeping, he was dead!

Either starved or frozen to death!

Even more bodies were scattered around, showing no signs of life, equally dead!

These bodies lay there uncared for, ignored by the living – or at least it seemed that way. In truth, they were waiting for a chance...

The dead had their clothes stripped off to keep others warm. In some obscure corners, corpses were being dragged into rooms. Everyone who lived here knew what was happening behind those closed doors.

She had gotten used to this life of inhumanity in a world without human rights. However, she failed to notice that the little boy was staring blankly at the scene, his eyes dry of tears and filled with a peculiar emotion.

He was trembling, his legs shaking violently, and his eyes filled with ferocity! He began to move forward, slowly at first, without the woman noticing him. But as he got closer to her head, she saw him – her own son.

She did not pay much heed. The boy had seen such scenes too many times before.

She only aspired to endure through this stimulating yet humiliating rush.

She didn’t care, and the man cared even less. Everything came to a halt when the boy reached for a piece of broken glass. Everyone was stunned!

The boy was standing still, and so was the woman. The onlookers were drawn to the scene, watching with baited breath, waiting for the next move.

The woman snapped out of it but didn’t say anything, and began resisting the man’s assault. The man also caught on to what the boy was about to do, and a sudden sense of alarm rose in his heart.

He tried to react, but it was too late. The boy had already raised his hand, tightly clutching the glass.

Spuh!

Before the man could fully analyze the situation, he collapsed on the ground, lifeless.

The woman had a stupefied look on her face. She was about to call his name, but the next moment...

She managed to dodge him just in time, but the boy’s eyes were fiery red, as if he had lost his mind.

Bang!

Then, a gunshot echoed. Another body collapsed lifelessly on the ground. The crowd around was chattering... The woman was dazed.

A while later, a shadowy figure leaped out from the building above, crashing onto the ground with a splatter of blood. It was the woman who had jumped to her death. Within the last ten minutes, she had been through the most unbearable moments of her life.

Her lifeless body merged with the darkness on the ground. After a short while, a few unsteady figures fumbled their way over to the woman’s corpse and crouched down on their knees, seemingly up to something.

Once the figures staggered away from the area, the dead woman came back to life!

Heh Heh...

Giving a few low growls, she slowly got up and began walking towards the firework display as if that was her heaven.

Only getting to that place could bring peace to her soul.
