Chapter 341: Chapter 340: The Darkest Human Nature_1

Mmm~

The little boy, whose mouth was suddenly covered by a woman, began to struggle. His strength was no match for an adult. Soon, he gave up, his face filled with injustice as tear-filled eyes stared distantly at the unreachable "paradise".

The fireworks exploding continuously in the night sky were truly beautiful. Especially in this apocalypse, countless people stood, staring in a daze at the transient blooms. Such a scene hadn’t appeared in their eyes for a long time.

They wanted to cheer but dared not make a sound, fearful of attracting the zombies, and being torn apart and devoured by them.

They didn’t know who was setting off the fireworks, but given the density, there must be many people involved. By doing this, were these people not willing to live?

Was it such an easy decision to make? It was bold, maybe they too could throw caution to the wind, and abandon any care for zombies or danger!

Many people had such thoughts, but no one put them into action. Having survived this far, life had become precious, a hard-won prize, and they were not willing to give it up, nor did they dare to die!

Death was quick, bringing complete relief. One could loudly bid farewell to this garbage world and walk away!

However, death was also painful. Even without having experienced it, the pain of being cut by a knife or hit by a stick was apparent enough. From that perspective, death would be even more painful, and they were afraid of pain!

That’s why they had to keep struggling to survive. If surviving had no hope, then it was meaningless.

However, each survivor held a glimmer of hope in their hearts. The purpose of survival was to become a new human and to enjoy things they couldn’t enjoy before!

This hope, however, both destroyed them and allowed them to squirm through life like cockroaches.

When she noticed her son had stopped making a noise, the woman sighed in relief. Releasing the hand that covered his mouth, she looked at the fireworks blossoming in the far distance, her eyes flickering with complex emotions.

If they did not know they were in the apocalypse, they might have mistaken it for a peaceful society as before, enjoying a Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner and chatting joyously with their families.

These were all luxuries that were once within her reach, but now, they have become the most impossible luxuries!

As she thought about the past, tears flowed from the woman’s eyes. God knows how much suffering she has endured in this apocalypse, all in a bid to survive, for her son to survive!

Her hands involuntarily tightened their grip on her son. Just as she was about to comfort him, a hand quickly reached out, grabbed the back of her collar, and yanked her backward.

The woman was frightened, quickly releasing her grip on her son to prevent him from getting hurt, then she turned to look behind.

The man pulling her was filthy and skinny, someone she recognized as a fellow survivor without any resources, waiting for death just like her.

She wanted to resist, but knowing she couldn’t beat him, she relented. The man was sickly thin, obviously tortured by starvation. With his body wrapped in newspapers and no baths for a long time, his neck was coated in a rolled-up layer of mud, giving off a nauseating smell.

The man’s condition was terrible, and she wasn’t much better. She was so thin that she hardly looked human. Wearing a thin, cotton-padded jacket with loose threads, she was trembling with cold. Even a newspaper would have been better than her current clothing.

"What do you want?" she asked fearfully, stealing a glance at her stupefied son.

"I’m freezing to death, what the fuck do you think I want?"

The woman struggled a bit, but was unable to shake him off. With no other choice, she turned her head, her eyes full of helplessness and deep resentment.

The place she turned her head to was where a person lay, his face waxen, cheeks severely sunken in, his eyes closed, and no movement in his stomach. This wasn’t someone sleeping, he was dead!

Starved or frozen to death!

In other areas lay many more like him, with no movement in their stomachs. They were all dead!

These corpses lay on the ground, ignored by everyone. Those who saw them turned a blind eye, or at least pretended to, all waiting for an opportune moment...

Their clothes had all been stripped off and worn by others. In several dark corners, some people were dragging a corpse into a room. As for what they were doing, anyone living there knew!

She was used to it in this world where human rights didn’t exist. Yet, she hadn’t seen the little boy next to her looking dazed, no longer crying, but just staring, his eyes flashed with strange emotions.

His hands began to shake, his legs trembling, his eyes filled with violence! He started moving forward, slowly, and the woman did not notice him until he reached her side. Her own son.
