A light, dull sound echoed from a distance, faint, unable to alert the entire settlement. Only a few who were on high alert were disturbed. They glanced around, and finding nothing unusual, they resumed their slumber.

In another place, immersed in darkness, Xu Haishui stood on Ah Fu’s back, his eyes intensely fixed on the red glow in the distance that lit up Jialing City like daylight. Murmuring, he said, "It seems that something has happened. I wonder which power is this bold to confront the military?"

The commotion roused Tang Ye from his sleep. His eyes flew open, and he climbed out of bed. After sparing a quick glance at Nannan sleeping in her cot, he ignored her and opened the door, his gaze locked on the distant red light.

The red light was blinding. Tang Ye immediately recognized it as fire—the glow of something burning.

He took off his clothes and randomly tossed them into the room. With a great leap, Tang Ye jumped straight out of the building. Just before his body hit the ground, flesh tore open at his back, and a set of large wings stretched out. With a fierce flap, they created a gust of wind, and he swiftly flew towards the red glow.

After a short while, Tang Ye saw the source of the red light. It was a half-constructed survivor base. The lower half of the anti-zombie wall was completed, but the upper half was still a steel framework awaiting the application of concrete. This unfinished wall shielded the small city within, the scene inside looking like hell itself.

Fire soared into the sky. In the distance, an abandoned exhaust tower collapsed with a resounding boom. Fires on the ground erupted, taking countless lives with them.

Tang Ye didn’t venture too close. He just stayed close enough to sense Xu Haishui and Ah Fu’s whereabouts. In a flash, he appeared beside Xu Haishui.

"Boss."

"What’s going on?" Tang Ye asked as he looked upon the disastrous scene below.

"Conflict among the survivors. It’s laughable. There are still so many zombies outside, but humans are still killing each other. Humans..."

Xu Haishui’s voice was full of lament and his face held a trace of sarcasm. It was unclear if he was saddened by his past as a human or if it was the ignorance of the humans that incensed him.

"I saw a funny skit online a few days ago, and someone there got it right. The human race won’t take things seriously until the very end," Tang Ye darkly said.

"I also saw it, but what can be done? Boss, you despise the ugliness of human nature, but it also saved you. Everything has two sides. Human nature is dark, but it also has light. If there was no human nature, you wouldn’t be my boss."

Tang Ye stayed silent, not immediately responding to Xu Haishui’s words. After a while, he finally said, "Indeed, human nature can be wretched, but it has also saved me many times. But what about you?"

"Me? I lost my humanity long ago. So, I don’t consider myself human. I’m just a zombie, right, boss?"

Tang Ye smiled in satisfaction. He liked how Xu Haishui’s words showed his loyalty.

The three zombies fell silent, watching the spectacle below like it was a show.

The flames at the not-yet-finished Xunan Base in Lin City roared like a dragon, consuming everything in its path!

A hole was purposely blown open on the road nearby, and people rushed out, guns in hand. Although they weren’t in uniform, their skills were on par with the military. They were deadly and well-coordinated, splitting into three groups as soon as they emerged. They swiftly took control of the guards on both sides of the anti-zombie wall.

The people on the center path launched their attack on the military base, seizing heavy weaponry!

When Tang Ye arrived, armored cars were ramming into one another indiscriminately, causing significant damage to the nearby buildings. Whenever two cars collided, they would spin wildly, digging ghastly scars into the ground.

Survivors in various clothing were armed and continuously attacking the distant military base. Caught off guard, the soldiers were retreating. Each soldier’s death provided the attackers with valuable weapons.

The soldiers guarding the north and south sides of the anti-zombie wall had been mostly killed. The survivors who emerged from the hole had control over both walls. The soldiers guarding the remaining two walls were on their way to back them up, but they were given some time.

The survivors were highly skilled, trained even. It was unknown who was responsible. They left half of their forces behind while the rest descended from the wall, heading outside the base.

The commotion caused attracted the zombies outside, who moved towards the light. Under the sweeping headlights, approaching groups of zombies could be seen heading their way, but the survivors heading out to meet them stood their ground.

In the face of zombies, such action surely spelled death. But that was not the case. The survivors sheathed their guns and took out their shovels. They started digging a one-meter deep pit up front while others tossed in decomposing bodies that they had collected from nearby.

People carrying crates of vinegar arrived. They opened the crates and poured the vinegar on the bodies. There were enough survivors to finish the work quickly. The bodies piled up in front of the survivors, blocking their way. A sour odor spread as soon as the vinegar touched the decaying bodies.

Inside the Anti-Zombie Wall Gate, more soldiers carrying bodies joined in, throwing them onto the pile.

Tang Ye furrowed his brows. The stench coming from below was nearly unbearable to him. However, seeing their actions, he quickly figured out what they were doing.

They were driving away the zombies. That odor, even he found it unbearable, let alone the zombies that were much closer!

Tang Ye paused, looking at Xu Haishui with a questioning gaze.
