Chapter 207: Chapter 205 Different Roles_1

Tang Ye’s figure gradually neared that door.

Thud, thud, thud, thud...

Each step, like a devil reveling in the slaughter to come within the darkness, stood before a seemingly ordinary door. Yet, for Tang Ye, opening this door meant embarking on an endless road of sin, from which there was no turning back.

Upon reaching the door, Tang Ye slowly raised his hand and knocked with his middle finger.

Clunk~

He had no idea what material the door was made of. The knock of his finger upon it resonated a crisp sound. Although faint, it echoed relentlessly within Tang Ye’s mind like a ringing bell.

Like he had been struck, his body jolted. The eerie smile on his face vanished in an instant as he withdrew his gaze, returning it to the door.

The sound of his own knock seemed to possess an unknown force that stirred within his mind ceaselessly.

"My only wish is that zombies and humans can coexist peacefully..."

"I have a wish, to see zombies and humans coexisting peacefully..."

"My wish is..."

"I have a wish..."

That voice echoed relentlessly in his mind. Tang Ye was helpless, as though constrained by something, unable to break free.

The guilt he had felt earlier resurfaced, leaving Tang Ye feeling anxious. He was baffled. As a zombie, is it not natural to kill human beings? Why was he feeling guilty?

Perhaps his remnants of conscience were urging him. Or perhaps, Tang Ye had never fully forsaken his identity. Amid the long span of life, the worldview he had established was not fragile enough to shatter within a mere five months.

"What is happening outside?"

"Someone’s knocking?"

"There’s no one outside. Who could be knocking?"

"Exactly. What’s going on?"

"Let’s have a look. Maybe someone survived?"

"Who’s going to open the door?"

In the building’s corridor, a crowd was gathered. When a middle-aged man asked who would open the door, all fell silent. Some even began to retreat, hoping to evade the gaze of this leader to avoid being forced to open the door.

After a tense four to five seconds of silence, a young boy suddenly raised his hand.

"I’ll go!"

"Alright, Zhuyu. Be careful."

"Mmm."

Wang Zhuyu nodded, approached the door, and gently held the doorknob. With a "click," he opened the door.

Beyond were only corpses on the streets. There wasn’t even a single zombie. Those corpses were all killed by a demon last night. His brutality had been plainly seen by each person in the crowd.

They had watched as the terrifying figure slaughtered his way from one end of the street to the other. The screams hadn’t stopped even for a moment. Just thinking about last night sent chills down their spines. Had that demon left yet?

No one could be seen on the street. Wang Zhuyu, puzzled, opened the door fully. Seeing everyone huddled behind him sent his heart racing, but knowing there was no imminent danger steadied him.

Wang Zhuyu stepped outside, looked around, and confirmed that no one was there before returning.

"No one’s there."

"No one? Then who knocked?"

"Could it be a ghost?"

"A ghost? In this day and age?"

The leader, a middle-aged man, looked puzzled. However, to prevent any fear from bubbling within the group, he refrained from speaking much. He simply told Wang Zhuyu, "If there’s no one, come back in."

"Okay."

Wang Zhuyu obediently nodded, closed the door, and walked back in. The people, seemingly unconcerned, started to chat again, but each wore a look of worry on their faces.

The situation was not much different from when the apocalypse first started, except the main cause for concern was still food. To survive, they needed to secure an ongoing source of food.

Everyone had hidden in this building, initially for shelter from the outbreak of the zombie virus. If one was fortunate, they could salvage some food from nearby small shops. Now, however, food was so scarce that even rats that had been dead for days were being eaten raw.

Where could they gamble on luck now? To get food, they had to enter the granary in the Noble Zone. The distance between their current location and the granary was enough to make them despair. They had no faith that they could evade the zombies and escape with food unscathed.

The people started to quarrel intensely over this issue. The middle-aged leader tried to pacify them. He looked like a good-natured person, but what he didn’t realize was that a man named Wang Zhu Shan was crouching in the corner, glaring at him without blinking.

His cold, malevolent stare was unnerving.

No one knew what had happened to him, or what deeds this seemingly righteous figure had committed in the past.

Every single person here was complex, each carrying their own secrets. After all, in this dystopic world, good people were a rare breed. Those who had survived were either ruthless or heartless.

The so-called good people who were still alive were either fortunate or protected by the powerful.

In the distance, Tang Ye emotionlessly watched the door that had been opened and then re-closed. After a while, he turned around and walked toward the outskirts of Yindan Base.

This apocalypse was for others. To him, this was just a different way of living. It was not all that bad, at least it was better than his life before the apocalypse, when he used to be at the bottom of society.

If he wanted, he could trample on human lives at will, or enjoy popcorn while watching the darkness of human nature. Given the chance, he might even discuss this ludicrous scene with others like him, the zombies.

However, he was not without pain. A pain that no one could fully understand.

This apocalypse wasn’t only for others, but for Tang Ye too. Except their apocalypse was external, while his was internal.

He was afraid of one thing--that there were no others like him, no other zombies like him! He felt a great need to converse with a member of his own kind, to talk about life, dreams, or perhaps share some silly things they had done in their younger days.

He could not bear to be alone. It left him particularly uncomfortable. Maybe he did not welcome others like him before, but now, he hoped for more.

A zombie with a human mindset could be more powerful, but if he had to choose between power and solitude, he would give up solitude.

Solitude was only one aspect. The true source of his suffering was his constant vacillation between human instinct and beast barbarity!
