Chapter 205: Chapter 203: I Can’t Do It_1
Tang Ye roared in rage, heard by everyone. They were attacking the zombies in a frenzy just like the zombies attacked them, their shouts of "Kill all the zombies!" never ceasing.
The more Tang Ye heard this, the more unbearable it became, until he finally collapsed on the ground, writhing violently. No one knew of the inner struggle he was experiencing, his heart crying out that he wasn’t a zombie, but the irony was palpable.
He was indeed a zombie, and the people’s cries sounded like brutal hammer blows to his heart, one after another.
Their shrieks made him feel utterly forsaken by his own kind. He didn’t want this; all of this was happening because he was a zombie!
Swallowed by a lonely feeling in an instant, his mind a blank canvas. There lay Tang Ye, rolling on the floor, his consciousness hazed, faintly hearing someone speak.
That voice, that tone... it was as if it was from a long time ago but also quite distant. The voice was soft and soothing, like the sound from heaven, as if an angel was embracing him.
"I have a wish, that zombies and humans live in harmony. The zombies won’t attack people; they’ll live together..."
Her voice was intermittently breaking. It was difficult for Tang Ye to listen to. This was Ning Yu’er’s voice, her wish, one she had mentioned to him. Even though he had heard it before, he desired to hear it once again. Her voice was comforting, it could almost be poison to him.
"The wish..."
Tang Ye stopped rolling, muttering to himself about that wish, slowly calming down. But this brief tranquillity ignited the fire in Tang Ye’s heart once more!
Her voice echoed in his head, making him feel even more miserable each time he heard it, as if he had done something wrong. By now, Tang Ye had lost count of how many people he had killed; but all of them had provoked him first!
He was known for his vile temper, and he hated anyone who provoked him!
"Fuck! Fuck off! I’m not listening! What a fucking wish! I can’t fulfil it!"
The body which had calmed down jerked violently yet again, rolling relentlessly; his hoarse voice screamed relentlessly. The intensity of his roar was heart-wrenching, but his words grew even more incomprehensible.
Yet, Ning Yu’er’s words echoing in his mind, describing her wish, were clear and vivid. They repeated in his mind like a mantra, further stoking the fires of his rage!
The deafening crescendo of people shouting and singingonly added fuel to that fire!
Then, Tang Ye’s body calmed down again. He silently got up and stood amidst the chaotic scene where people and zombies were running frantically, appearing rather peaceful.
Yet his eyes were filled with a bloody red hue, brimming with an untamed desire to kill.
"Hehe...hehe...enough, all of you!"
Roar!
Another roar ripped through the heavens, causing a short pause in the chaos, but the frenzied energy soon resumed.
"Enough, all of you! I need quiet, I do not wish to hear any more noise, I don’t want to hear your voices! All of you! All of you should die, just die! Die, hahaha! Hahaha, this is fun, I’ll slaughter all of you! Kill all of you! Ha, ha, ha!"
His hands hanging down helplessly, the tendril-like meat lumps and protruding bone spurs on his back were flapping on the ground as if they had lost control. Suddenly, all these structures lifted violently, while Tang Ye attacked relentlessly. His retractable tendrils, meat lumps, and bone spurs started spinning rapidly, massacring everything living around him, be it zombies or humans!
"All of you should die! Die, hahahaha! I’m not a human, not a zombie, I’m nothing! Hahaha!"
The darkness of this night was strangely intense. The sparse, scattered clouds in the sky hid a few twinkling stars, and the moon was nowhere to be seen. It was either hidden behind the darkened clouds or too shy to witness what was transpiring.
The lights at the Yindan Base turned on when the time came, but they extinguished shortly afterwards.
Inside the ruined zombie defence wall, no other noises could be heard. Occasionally, the silence was broken by the sound of gunfire, but it quickly faded. Screams of agony could be heard but never lasted long.
Gradually, the dawn break started to illuminate the gloomy surroundings, casting a brilliant light on the apocalyptic scene, as awe-striking as an eagle’s dive from the sky.
In the streets, layers of dead bodies lay on top of each other. The pooled blood congealed beneath the numerous corpses, creating an extremely horrifying tableau!
A shadowy figure slowly approached from the end of the street. He was bare-chested, his entire body was covered in a thick layer of dried blood clings like a shroud.
Crunch...crackle...crunch.
As Tang Ye walked across the dead bodies, he casually removed the dried blood clinging to him, making a series of discomforting cracking noises in the process. He saw a man squatting in a corner where there were no bodies.
After recognising that it was Tang Ye, the man shrank back fearfully, clutching tightly onto the half of the zombie-killing sword that he had left.
Tang Ye stopped in front of him, but he did not directly face the man. Instead, he looked down at the dead body he was standing on, whose eyes remained wide open in death.
"I’m sorry, all of this, actually... I didn’t want this either, it’s just... many things are just so damn hopeless."
Tang Ye shook his head, gently closed the dead body’s eyes, and reached into the corpse’s pocket to pull out a packet of cigarettes. There were exactly three cigarettes left in the packet.
He took one, propped open the corpse’s mouth, and inserted the cigarette. With a borrowed lighter, he lit the cigarette and said, "Finish this cigarette, then you can rest in peace."
Having said that, Tang Ye picked up another cigarette and put it in his mouth. After lighting it, he exhaled a mouthful of dense smoke, then turned to look at the new human not far away.
He was familiar. He was the soldier who had begged Tang Ye to save the mother and daughter.
Seeing him tremble in fear, Tang Ye smirked, saying: "Don’t worry, you’re a good man, I won’t kill you."
With that, Tang Ye walked to him, took out the last cigarette and handed it to him. The man released his grip on the zombie-killing sword and took the cigarette without saying a word.
Surprisingly, Tang Ye personally lit his cigarette for him. The man exhaled a puff of smoke, his expression turning hazy.
Throughout this night, he didn’t know how many he had killed. All he knew was, among the piles of bodies beneath his feet, at least half of them were killed by him!
The Yindan Base, at this point, was officially declared destroyed.
But the guilt in Tang Ye’s heart was unbearable. Not for the people he had killed, but for the guilt he felt towards Ning Yu’er.
