Chapter 1610: Chapter 1604: It’s Already a Miracle
If it were under normal circumstances, Ghost Head might have burst into laughter upon hearing Brother Shi’s tone, full of a blatant attitude of giving up. But their current dire situation left no room for such levity; he wanted to laugh, yet not even the faintest hint of humor stirred within his heart.
He struggled to turn his head, his gaze shifting to the rear. White smoke, wafting out from the vehicle’s framework, slightly impaired visibility, but it didn’t matter much. That strike just now must have caught the Level 7 zombie off guard, right?
From such close range, directly at the bullseye—no matter how high a Level 7 zombie’s defense was, it couldn’t endure it. Besides, this creature wasn’t one of those evolved zombies focused solely on power and defense. Following the laser beam hitting its target, the Level 7 zombie was blasted into the air, firelight rippling in the distance nonstop. Flames scorched its flesh and skin, reducing them to festering ruins, and the faint sound of "crackling, snapping" could be heard!
The harsh and despairing screeches forced Ghost Head to summon up his waning energy. He kept his eyes locked on the blazing firelight, silently chanting in his heart, "Die! Die! Hurry up and die already! Don’t get back up!"
He prayed incessantly, pleading for Heaven itself to hear his cries. But the heavens weren’t moved. As his desperate prayers continued, it wasn’t long before Ghost Head saw that all-too-familiar silhouette emerge once again from the flames!
"F*ck!"
Ghost Head cursed outright and instinctively kicked at Brother Shi. "Hey, that thing’s back! Wake up, dammit!"
His shouting only made Brother Shi open his eyes slightly and shake his head weakly. He didn’t grab the cloth strips to operate the Tianguang weapon behind the chair again.
"Get up already! That zombie isn’t dead yet, man!"
Ghost Head’s voice verged on a roar. Brother Shi shook his head again, replying in a frail tone, "I... damn it... I got no strength left... My leg’s killing me... Swap places—your turn..."
"Shit!"
Seeing Brother Shi in this state, Ghost Head cursed fiercely, then tried to get up from his seat. However, the moment he exerted force through his hands, a searing pain swept through his body, immobilizing him entirely. It was so intense that even catching his breath felt impossible.
"We’re dead meat!"
He turned back to look again. The Level 7 zombie was howling as it trudged out of the firelight, its remaining eyes locked squarely on them. Striding forward one step at a time, it started to pick up speed. Moments later, it transitioned from walking to running, its shadow stretching into a blur, eventually moving so fast that Ghost Head’s eyes could no longer track its movement!
"Damn it!"
Ghost Head glanced at the Tianguang weapon behind the seat, hesitating for a moment as he considered pulling the trigger himself. But the recoil haunted him with dread; he wasn’t sure if he could withstand the force in his current state.
Time sped by within his inner turmoil. They already had so little to waste—just this brief hesitation brought the zombie terrifyingly close!
And at that exact moment, Crooked Neck delivered worse news!
"Bad news! The road ahead is blocked!"
In front of the vehicle, due to a landslide, masses of soil and rocks had tumbled down, sealing off the road entirely and merging into the surrounding mountain range. Their choices boiled down to crashing straight through—which the heavy-duty vehicle clearly couldn’t survive—or facing a sure fate of destruction.
The only viable alternative was getting off the truck and crossing the obstructed path on foot as fast as possible. But their speed? No doubt about it—stepping out would mean instant dismemberment by the zombie threat!
Trapped between a flesh-eating beast and a dead-end, the occupants of the vehicle sank rapidly into hopelessness. For a brief moment, Brother Shi braced himself upright, his eyes filled with inner conflict. He hesitated until the gaping maw of the high-level zombie grew larger in his line of sight, prompting him to shout at Yong: "Yong! Shoot it dead!"
As soon as his voice rang out, Yong sprang into action like a machine prepped for standby. The instant Brother Shi finished speaking, Yong raised the Tianguang weapon in his hand. Ghost Head hesitated at first—could this even work?
Then, a second later, he noticed Yong tuning the Tianguang’s discharging lever toward the red zone. The realization nearly made Ghost Head leap out of the vehicle and flee. But so what? By the time he completed an escape attempt, let alone an entire series of movements to disembark, any Level 2 New Human would’ve already fired off dozens of shots!
So all he could do was wait. Soon enough, Yong pressed the firing button—as the Level 7 zombie lunged for the truck’s rear, about to sink its teeth into it.
Zzz~ BOOM!
The shot fired by Yong’s Tianguang weapon was far beyond a mere gunshot—it was practically artillery. And not just "artillery" in the ordinary sense—the devastation vastly surpassed even that word’s literal meaning!
This blast was nothing like the humming "zzz zzz zzz" sound from earlier—this time, its intensity transformed into a deafening "boom boom" roar!
In that instant, the muzzle of Yong’s Tianguang weapon burst out an extreme crimson glow!
The surrounding air started compressing in that single heartbeat! Violent winds began howling endlessly, their force uncontrollable. Ghost Head and the others were struggling to keep their footing—their legs nearly lifted off the ground and floated mid-air. The expressions on their faces were indistinguishable as their features were practically warped! Chair covers and their exoskeleton combat suits started cracking audibly, one fissure after another appearing. They wanted to speak, but the wind drowned their voices, muffling their words so much they sounded like senseless "ooo, ooo" noises, incapable of conveying anything intelligible.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Crooked Neck turned around abruptly, clutching the backrest with all his might. Ghost Head grasped at the front seat desperately. Even the critically injured Brother Shi ignored his pain, pulled himself up, and clung to Ghost Head’s waist like an octopus!
Loose objects inside the vehicle were thrown about violently, scattering in all directions. The gusts blinded the group, making it impossible to keep their eyes open. Ghost Head tried to take a peek at Yong’s current state, but when he finally managed to crack his eyes open, all he saw was a dazzling deep-red light beam!
That light was as brilliant as the sun in his vision! It stung his eyes harshly, rapidly forming cobweb-like cracks across his visor. Out of sheer preservation instinct, he shut his eyes tightly. Next, all he could feel was a sensation as though his skin was being peeled off—a raw, burning pain spread over his body. Soon after that, he felt his body grow inexplicably light, as if floating. The pain gradually diminished in this state, and his consciousness turned hazy. He wanted to open his eyes but lacked the drive to do so. All he yearned for was to close them, let his awareness sink into the void, and wait for the moment he might awaken again.
As for whether that Level 7 zombie had died, Ghost Head didn’t know. Even if it hadn’t, he no longer had any strength left to care. To have survived this long while being hunted by a Level 7 zombie was already a miracle for Level 2 New Humans like them.
