Chapter 1595: Chapter 1589: An Existence That Can be Provoked
A few people exchanged glances, their thoughts need not be concealed. The car was parked in front of an old building, and judging by appearances, there might be survivors inside. They examined the windows of the building, which hadn’t been fortified, leading them to deduce that the survivors inside were likely resting there, at least temporarily.
"What’s the plan? Should we make a move?" Ghost Head asked Brother Shi. They were heading toward Bai Ling Base and couldn’t rely on walking forever. None of them had food, and without energy replenishment, having a vehicle would be the best option.
Brother Shi didn’t say a word, while the others around him stared at the car, lost in thought. Each had their own concerns, given that they lacked food and transportation. Yet, an opportunity was right in front of them—a car and potentially a solution to their food problem.
However, they couldn’t determine who the people inside the old building were. If they turned out to be mercenary group members, or powerful lone bounty hunters, barging in recklessly might lead to instant annihilation!
Survival in the apocalypse required careful thought—acting impulsively could get you killed without even realizing it.
After another round of glances, Brother Shi finally spoke, "To be safe, let’s avoid alarming them for now. We’ll send someone over to scout the situation first. Just say you’ve been hungry for days and are begging for food. Make sure your acting is convincing. If they’re manageable, then..."
Brother Shi trailed off as he pressed his hand downward, his meaning clear. If they could handle it, they’d make a move; if the opposition was too strong, there’d still be room for retreat.
"Who’s going, then?" Before the others could respond, Bald Head asked. Without a doubt, the person scouting would be in a dangerous position, though the risk wasn’t extreme—it all depended on the temperament and strength of those inside.
As Bald Head posed the question, Ghost Head immediately raised his hand and said, "I’ll go."
"...Alright, strip off everything. Don’t wear the military gear either."
Ghost Head nodded and took off his exoskeleton combat suit, Tianguang weapon, and military uniform. Just as he was about to leave, Brother Shi called out to him.
"Hold on."
"What’s wrong?"
Brother Shi stepped forward, tearing a few holes in Ghost Head’s inner clothing. Then, he grabbed some dirt nearby and smeared it on Ghost Head until he resembled a beggar, only then did he stop.
"Alright, now go."
Ghost Head responded with a simple "okay" and set off toward the building, unarmed. Carefully, he avoided the scattered zombies on the street and arrived smoothly at the entrance of the building. Just by looking at the nearby truck, he noticed a chimney-like device on its roof. Though he didn’t fully understand the mechanics, he knew one thing—the presence of such a device meant the vehicle ran on anti-life matter as its fuel source.
Standing at the door, he hesitated for a moment because he could hear footsteps inside, growing louder and closer. Someone was right behind the door now. No doubt, the survivors inside had sensed the new human energy emanating from him.
Inspecting his disguise once more to ensure everything was in place, Ghost Head finally knocked on the door.
Knock knock knock~
He knocked three times, but there was no response from inside. After a long silence, Ghost Head patiently waited, occasionally taking a deep breath to calm himself. His heightened senses reassured him—the people inside didn’t seem particularly strong. He could sense the energy of one Level 3 New Human and others ranging between Level 2 and Level 1.
They were within manageable range.
Next, he had to determine if they possessed any weapons of significant destructive power.
Before long, he heard a "clack." The door creaked open, its hinges grinding against rusted metal and producing an ear-piercing noise after years of neglect.
Through the opening, Ghost Head saw an eye staring back at him, a man’s eye, judging by its appearance. Clearly, the man was also watching Ghost Head.
"Who are you?"
The voice from behind the door sounded like a man’s. Hearing this, Ghost Head immediately responded, "Don’t worry. I mean no harm. I’ve been starving for days and saw this truck. I figured someone might be staying here, so I came to beg for a bit of food..."
"No!"
Ghost Head hadn’t even finished speaking when the man bluntly refused him. Despite Ghost Head’s energy indicating he was merely a Level 2 New Human, the man didn’t lower his guard.
Ghost Head didn’t give up; he quickly added, "Please don’t worry, I truly don’t mean to harm anyone. I just need some food, and I’ll leave as soon as you give me a little. That’s it."
"I said no! Get lost!"
The man rejected him again, this time more aggressively. Without waiting for Ghost Head’s further pleas, he slammed the door shut and locked it!
Ghost Head squinted his eyes. He had seen the weapon in the woman’s hands behind the man—a laser weapon produced years ago, long since obsolete. Based on the energy emanating from inside, there were five people in the building, one of whom seemed to be an ordinary person, possibly even a child!
Such a group was absolutely within their ability to handle!
Without saying anything further, Ghost Head turned and walked toward another building to avoid being shot in the back by the survivors. Once he had reached Brother Shi’s position, he raised one hand and made an OK gesture. Seeing this, Brother Shi and the others grinned. Although their next actions were utterly immoral, they couldn’t afford to care about the fate of others while ensuring their own survival.
"Move!" Snapper was the first to shout, his expression brimming with excitement. If they managed to secure the food and truck, their worries would be over!
They quickly regrouped with Ghost Head, handing back his exoskeleton combat suit, weapons, and gear. Then, they began advancing toward the building.
"If they cooperate, we’ll take what we need and leave. If not, we’ll take them out."
The group swiftly activated their exoskeleton suits, armed themselves with Tianguang weapons, and marched toward the old building. Leading the charge, Bald Head wasted no time and kicked the broken security door wide open!
The very next second, a sudden burst of light flashed inside—a bright blue laser hitting Bald Head squarely and without warning!
It turned out that after Ghost Head had left, the survivors inside didn’t lower their guard. They had remained vigilant, weapons in hand, stationed by the door. The moment Bald Head kicked the door open, the survivors launched a counterattack!
