I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World -
Chapter 1589 - 1583: The Beautiful Moments Preserved
Chapter 1589: Chapter 1583: The Beautiful Moments Preserved
Listening to Bald Head’s words, Ghost Head raised his head to glance at the horizon. It was already five or six in the afternoon, and the west was adorned with radiant red clouds. Flocks of birds flew across the sky, making the scene in Ghost Head’s eyes appear so... Wait, how could there be birds?
Ghost Head froze for a moment. It had been a long time since he last saw birds flying in the sky. Normally, in the Dangerous Sanctuary City, seeing flocks of birds outdoors was a rarity. People would lock themselves inside buildings with doors and windows tightly shut because the birds seen during the Apocalypse were usually zombified. Zombie bird flocks were even more horrifying!
Panic surged in his heart briefly, but he quickly calmed down. He noticed those birds looked peculiar—almost as if they weren’t zombie birds. On closer inspection, he realized these birds were red. How rare was that?
But he recognized them—bright red all over. Weren’t those Red Feathered Birds?
"This..."
Such birds didn’t exist before the Apocalypse. Likely, after the Apocalypse, some birds underwent genetic mutations, turning their feathers red. He remembered that this type of bird generally didn’t appear in this area—typically they were only found in the South-central Region of China. Beyond those areas, they were basically never seen.
Realizing they were Red Feathered Birds, the unease in Ghost Head’s heart quickly dissipated. His gaze gradually turned enraptured, like he had found something he had been longing for.
The sun’s afterglow painted the clouds red on the horizon, and the hazy light transformed the sky into something dreamlike and surreal. Flocks of Red Feathered Birds circled, giving this city reduced to ruins an epic, breathtaking quality. Even though everything was silent, the wind blowing through seemed to carry the sound of an unknown figure playing a long flute. The soft melody, accompanied by pure singing, evoked a poignant and awe-inspiring feeling.
"Hey, look over there."
Ghost Head took a deep breath. This "journey" was becoming increasingly beautiful for him. Everything before his eyes rivaled, and perhaps even surpassed, the scenes in his childhood memories. He felt as if he wanted to merge every part of himself into the sight before him.
At the same time, he couldn’t wait to share everything he saw with the others.
Hearing his voice, Brother Shi and the others raised their heads to look at where Ghost Head was staring. They froze for a moment, their expressions briefly dazed.
"Those birds are... Red Feathered Birds..."
"So beautiful..."
"But isn’t it strange? How are Red Feathered Birds appearing here?"
"Who cares. I heard their feathers can be eaten. Wonder if that’s true?"
"Why don’t you go try?"
Just as a few Red Feathered Birds flew overhead, a few feathers gently floated down as their wings flapped. Ghost Head stepped forward to the spot where the feather was about to land, reached out his hand, and caught one. Hesitating for a moment, he placed it in his mouth. The others quickly gathered around in curiosity, looking at Ghost Head and asking, "How does it taste?"
Ghost Head smacked his lips. The feather he put in his mouth quickly began to dissolve. The taste... was hard to describe. If he had to, it was like eating an empty capsule after removing all the medicine inside—no flavor. But perhaps if there were enough, it might stave off hunger.
He shared his experience with the others, and Brother Shi and the rest couldn’t wait to try for themselves. Their impressions mirrored Ghost Head’s.
"Alright, brothers. This is indeed beautiful, but we should leave here now."
"Have you decided where to spend the night?"
"Not yet. But I think it’s better to get as far away from here as possible. Bai Liang must’ve figured out we’re gone by now. Who knows if he’ll send someone after us?"
"True. Let’s get moving; it’s almost dark."
The group gathered their belongings, but Brother Shi took one last look at the breathtaking scenery and said, "You all wait a moment."
"What are you doing?"
"I’m going to capture this."
Brother Shi pulled out his phone. None of them objected—it felt necessary to preserve the beauty they were witnessing. After all, who knew if they’d ever see such a sight again?
Brother Shi activated the camera and recorded the exquisite scene, saving an eleven-second video. Even without a soundtrack, the imagery across the screen evoked vivid reverie. Understanding the mood, he purposely avoided filming the devastated city below, focusing solely on the sky and birds. Yet even so, if one weren’t seeing it firsthand, they’d struggle to believe such beauty existed on Earth today.
Ghost Head leaned over, joining Brother Shi in admiring the flawless recording. Then he noticed Brother Shi open a certain entertainment app.
"Let others witness what we’ve seen," Brother Shi said with a bit of emotion, perhaps affected by the scenery. It seemed like some of the oppression in his heart had dissipated, stirring a newfound hope for the future.
Without any editing or sound effects, Brother Shi uploaded the video. Afterward, the group packed up their things, and the six of them began heading toward the highway entrance. Along the way, they encountered a few zombies, but it was no big deal for them—they had B-class exoskeleton battle suits. As long as they didn’t face a Level 6 zombie, and provided their luck held, danger seemed manageable. They also possessed Tianguang technology, the cutting edge of Dangerous Sanctuary City gear!
With their equipment, it would be extraordinarily tough for them to be killed—so long as a Level 6 or higher zombie didn’t appear and misfortune didn’t strike.
Still, ordinary survivor teams didn’t have gear like theirs.
On the highway, the six pressed onward. The road was riddled with potholes, and rust-coated vehicles lined the roadside. As they moved, they checked these abandoned cars, hoping to find one barely functional, but they were continually met with disappointment.
Occasionally, a zombie leapt out, yet most were Level 1 or un-evolved ordinary zombies. Before fully rising up, they were swiftly obliterated by a single laser shot from the six.
"Don’t bother checking. This car’s scrap—the engine’s been dismantled," Crooked Neck remarked after inspecting one vehicle, giving Bald Head a pat. The group exchanged exasperated looks and stopped their attempts.
Brother Shi glanced at the darkening sky. The horizon in the east had already turned pitch black. During the Apocalypse, nighttime always carried an intense sense of unease.
"Seems like we’re out of options. Let’s spend the night at that gas station up ahead."
Through the dim light, the group could make out a gas station overtaken by vegetation in the distance. Even from hundreds of meters away, they could see its decay, as well as faintly shifting silhouettes within. As for what those silhouettes were, the answer was all too clear.
After walking for so long—even as Level 2 New Humans—they felt fatigued. Snapper, groaning in complaint, said, "I’m starting to regret running away. Ma De, we can’t even figure out where our next meal’s coming from now."
