Chapter 1584: Chapter 1578: Country Bumpkin
Brother Shi cast a suspicious glance at Yong’s face. This guy is definitely a freak!
He patted Yong on the shoulder, but in the very next second, his pupils shrank. The instant his hand touched Yong’s shoulder, the latter suddenly raised his arm. A bizarre sense of pressure seemed to clamp around his nose, making his heart jolt violently. However, Yong quickly put his hand down.
This was an instinctive reaction.
"Uh... no need to be nervous. I... let’s go over there to talk." The scare from just now made Brother Shi stutter a little. Once he regained his composure, he couldn’t help but feel puzzled.
What on earth was that?
Even when facing his own older brother, a Level 6 New Human, he had never experienced anything like what just happened. In that fleeting moment, it felt like he was standing in front of an immensely powerful beast, so small and insignificant by comparison!
That feeling... it seemed to come from this guy. Yet he’s just like me, a Level 2 New Human. So strange...
Yong glanced at Brother Shi but said nothing, nodding dazedly in response.
"Let’s go, let’s go."
Brother Shi temporarily pushed aside the weirdness from earlier and led Yong over to where Ghost Head was. Nonetheless, a small part of him regretted this—this guy is so clueless!
When Brother Shi brought Yong over, Ghost Head scooted to the side, offering up a seat. Yong stared at him for a few seconds before finally saying, in an almost emotionless tone, "Thank you."
"No need, no need, sit anywhere."
Yong sat down, and Brother Shi took the seat beside him. He glanced around instinctively, making sure no one was paying attention to them, before whispering to Yong, "What should we call you?"
"...Just call me Yong... that’s fine."
"Is that a nickname?"
"Huh?" Yong looked slightly puzzled as he turned to Brother Shi, his eyes finally showing a hint of emotion—confusion.
"Nothing, that’s your name?"
"Yes... it’s my name. Yong... the ’Yong’ in ’forever.’"
"Alright then, let’s get down to it. The matter I showed you earlier—if we keep going as we are, every one of us is going to die. So, when we reach the destination, we’re planning to sneak away. Yong, what’s your take? Want to join us?"
Yong stared straight ahead. As Brother Shi spoke, he turned to briefly look at both Ghost Head and Brother Shi before finally nodding. "Alright."
"You better think it through; the consequences of desertion are serious."
Yong’s straight-to-the-point agreement almost made Brother Shi feel like he’d eaten a lump of shit—utterly uncomfortable. The guy had agreed so offhandedly, it felt like something important was still left unsaid. Yet when he thought about it, there wasn’t much else to say.
At this moment, Ghost Head chimed in, "Then it’s settled. Once we get to the destination, we find an opportunity to slip away. The faster, the better."
"What if there’s no opportunity?"
"Then we’ll make an opportunity ourselves. No matter what, we have to get out."
Brother Shi said determinedly. Just then, the vehicle behind theirs started speeding up, overtaking them. A soldier in the back of the truck stuck his head out and yelled at them, "Your turn!"
Immediately, that truck pulled ahead. From the cargo hold at the back, three veteran soldiers jumped out. One of them, a soldier in his mid-thirties, shouted at them, "Rookie bastards, time to get to work!"
As he spoke, the three veterans began unloading crates from the back of the truck, stacking them toward the front. Ghost Head and the other recruits didn’t dare linger idly anymore. They all stopped their chatter and worked alongside the three veterans, hauling crates forward.
One of the veterans pulled out a knife and skillfully cut open a crate. Inside were glass vials, each about the width of a thumb, with green casings on both ends. A yellowish liquid, somewhat resembling cooking oil, swirled inside.
The veteran grabbed one of the vials, raised it high, and said, "This thing’s called zombie lure. Real useful stuff. Each of you, take ten tubes and stuff them in your backpacks."
Hearing this, the rookies did as instructed, each packing ten tubes into their bags, then looking expectantly toward the veteran.
Their expressions amused the three veterans. The one holding the zombie lure reached out to give Ghost Head a pat on the head. Ghost Head looked back at him quizzically.
"Starting with you, toss the zombie lure outside. One tube per person, line up, take turns tossing. Once you’re done, get to the back of the line and wait your turn. Got it?"
"Got it!" the rookies shouted in unison.
"That’s it then, get to work."
With that, the veteran and the other two headed to the back, clearly intending to leave all the grunt work to the rookies.
Brother Shi spat on the ground in annoyance, muttering something under his breath. Luckily, the veterans didn’t hear him.
"Hurry up," he urged Ghost Head in front of him. Ghost Head nodded, pulled out a tube of zombie lure, and felt its green casing. It was made of metal. Without thinking too much, he tossed the lure outside.
He hadn’t used too much force, assuming the glass tube would shatter upon impact. But when the zombie lure hit the ground, it only made two dull thudding sounds—"thud thud"—without breaking.
"What the hell..."
Ghost Head froze for a moment. This thing was much tougher than he’d thought. While he stood there at a loss, the three veterans noticed and one of them swore, "F*ck!"
The veteran stormed over to Ghost Head, smacked him hard on the head, and roared, "Are you a f*cking bumpkin? Don’t even know how to use zombie lure?"
The remark made the other rookies burst out laughing. Ghost Head’s face flushed with embarrassment. He indeed had never handled something like zombie lure before—his previous life circumstances simply hadn’t required it.
"Totally wasted a tube, what a piece of shit." The veteran cursed again, taking out another tube from the crate. Raising it for everyone to see, he said, "Some of you still don’t know how to use this, so watch closely. First, like this..."
He twisted the green casing with his hand. A faint "hiss" sound followed. The casing popped open slightly, revealing a folded piece of metal. The veteran explained, "Then, you do this."
Grabbing the lifted metal, the veteran pulled hard. The metal strip tore right off, and the zombie lure emitted a hissing noise, likely releasing its liquid contents.
"Got it?" he asked, looking at Ghost Head. Ghost Head, not daring to argue, quickly nodded.
"Do it again," the veteran said, tossing the open zombie lure off to the side.
"Got it."
Ghost Head picked up another zombie lure and mimicked the veteran’s actions, successfully activating its mechanism and throwing it onto the road behind them.
"Next!"
