Chapter 154: Chapter 152: Setting Fire to the Yard_1
"What a weirdo. He sleeps with a mask on. What a character. That’s just ridiculous."
In the darkness, the man who sneaked into Tang Ye’s room vaguely saw Tang Ye lying on the bed, mask still on his face, seemingly dead or alive. The stranger mocked him silently, and then his gaze shifted to the crib where Nannan was sleeping.
His face lit up with happiness. He carefully walked over and gently lifted Nannan, heading towards the door. Upon seeing his comrades searching in various places, he gestured to them that the target had been found.
The leader came over, glanced at the sleeping Nannan, gently tapped the man on the shoulder, and nodded. The man understood immediately and, holding Nannan, climbed over the wall and ran into the distance.
The two remaining men didn’t rush to leave. Instead, they went to the spot where they had climbed over, picked up two cans of gasoline, and headed towards the house in the courtyard.
They were not making an effort to conceal their footsteps now because they considered their mission mostly completed. The gasoline was just for an extra task, not as important, but it wouldn’t hurt to earn some extra merit!
Upon hearing footsteps outside, Tang Ye’s eyes suddenly opened. However, he didn’t notice Nannan’s absence. He merely thought the footsteps belonged to Li Xiaoyan and Chen Chaoyang, so he closed his eyes and continued his resting.
Zombies are highly sensitive to sound, even the smallest ones. However, since meeting Nannan, or more precisely Ning Yu’er earlier, Tang Ye had become accustomed to their slight breathing sounds during sleep. He automatically blocked out these sounds when he was resting!
The ears of a Level 3 zombie were extremely sensitive. This fact was apparent in how Ah Fu was able to hear screams from three or four meters underground and then dig a hole straight down to reach the source.
"It’s all soaked. Let it burn."
"Okay!"
After soaking the entire house with gasoline, one of them took out a lighter and was about to ignite the gas when a stern voice rang out.
"Stop!"
The figure of Yan Jie suddenly appeared. Seeing him, the leader sighed regretfully and shook his head. To his companion nearby, he said:
"You carry on, I’ll deal with this guy."
After speaking, he passed his cell phone to the other man. The man nodded, and the sparks from the lighter headed towards the gasoline.
"Stop in the name of the law!"
Watching the man’s actions, Yan Jie ran over quickly and drew his zombie-killing knife. Seeing the knife, the leader was slightly taken aback.
"Are you from the defense team? Why are you here? Don’t you know it’s curfew?"
"Oh, it is curfew time. What are you guys doing out then?"
"We’re from Group Seven. We have permission to be out during curfew!"
"Enough talk. Stop this!"
With the zombie-killing knife raised, Yan Jie charged towards the lackey behind the leader.
"Humph! Overestimating your abilities!"
The leader, an ordinary human, scoffed upon seeing Yan Jie completely ignoring him to attack his underling, a new human. Coldness shot through his eyes as he quickly unholstered the curved dagger from his waist, and moved to block Yan Jie’s path!
"Die!"
Seeing the leader with his human-level strength, Yan Jie sneered. The hooked blade of his knife swooped down to catch the protrusion of the dagger held by the leader, after which he yanked with all his might.
Upon joining the zombie defense team, Yan Jie had dedicated himself to his training. Unlike Chen Chaoyang, who slacked off, Yan Jie trained diligently. His combat skills had significantly improved in just half a month!
However, even with his improvement, Yan Jie underestimated the leader of these ordinary humans. When his dagger got hooked by Yan Jie’s knife, a look of satisfaction crossed the leader’s eyes. He thought, "You’re still too green!"
Bending slightly at the waist, he relaxed his lower body, causing his balance to become unstable. He let his body move with the force exerted by Yan Jie. Loosening his grip on the dagger, he drew another from his waist with his free hand, piercing it directly towards Yan Jie’s forehead!
Feeling the imminent danger, Yan Jie barely managed to dodge the attack. But because he was unable to exert complete control over his strength, he staggered backward.
Just when he dodged the leader’s attack, the leader kicked the falling dagger from the ground, caught it in his hand, and flung it towards Yan Jie. The leader did not halt in his attack, stepping forward fluidly, his other hand stabbing the second dagger in a tricky angle towards Yan Jie’s throat!
Clang!
Yan Jie instinctively blocked the incoming dagger with his zombie-killing knife. But luck was not on his side - the dagger pierced his shoulder, and the leader swiftly followed up with another attack!
He felt death closing in and bent his body in a panic, but the dagger still pierced his waist.
At this point, the man who had lit the gasoline now joined the fight, teaming up with the leader to attack Yan Jie!
Facing such pressure, Yan Jie, who was already at a disadvantage, was suddenly overwhelmed. In no time, several wounds opened up on his body.
Squish!
The leader’s dagger penetrated Yan Jie’s stomach once again. He spat out a mouthful of blood, feeling weakness spread throughout his body. Trembling, he didn’t know who to target next. But as he hesitated, the other man’s dagger drew a chilling arc and sliced open a twenty-centimeter-long wound on his abdomen!
Having held on for a moment, his knife clattered to the ground and he fell down, blood splattering everywhere. His life was hanging by a thread!
With the robust vitality of new humans, these injuries might not kill him. The other man wanted to approach and check if Yan Jie was completely dead and to dealt a final blow if needed. But just as he stepped forward, the leader said, "Let’s go. The Level 2 New Human will wake up soon!"
No matter how skilled the leader was, even though he could deal with Level 1 New Humans who had a weak foundation or no martial arts background, he was not confident when it came to Level 2 New Humans!
A Level 2 New Human’s strength was several times greater than that of a Level 1 New Human. They could entirely rely on their speed and strength to crush him. Once caught, there was no escape!
The man didn’t speak. He just nodded, and then they both climbed over the wall, disappearing into the courtyard.
Flames ignited, crawling up the roof beams and pillars, incinerating the building in the courtyard, illuminating the inky night!
The fire’s crackling sounds, snapping through the wooden beams, woke Tang Ye from his rest. His eyes snapped open, and like a zombie in a movie, he stood up at an ungodly angle. Arriving at the door, he blasted it open only to see an empty crib.
"What’s going on?"
Tang Ye wondered aloud while examining the flames outside. He clutched the plush elastic band that Ning Yu’er had given him. With his other hand, he pushed down the adjacent wooden wall, quelling some of the flames before stepping outside.
