Chapter 1494: Chapter 1489: Sudden Knock on the Door
Tang Ye did not venture further down the corridor but stood in place calling Lu Xiaojie’s name. Despite calling out for a long time, he received no response. At this point, he revisited the content of the letter and realized after some thought that Lu Xiaojie also was not sure whether she could be found or not. It seemed as though they were not in the same space, and she had no clear idea how he could find her; it was all left to chance.
The question arose, if she herself was uncertain of being found, why would she have him come to this recycling depot?
Of course, it might be that she had been here for a long time and by chance encountered something at the depot, just as he had experienced something similar last night. However, such instances were few and she didn’t know exactly how to handle them.
Yet, this half chance she spoke of always gave Tang Ye a feeling that there was a deeper meaning to it.
After calling out Lu Xiaojie’s name a few more times without a response, Tang Ye gave up. He suddenly remembered that the letter mentioned following the same route Lu Xiaojie took him through last night. Did that mean he should venture deeper?
Tang Ye considered for a moment and felt it necessary. It was very likely that Lu Xiaojie was in that morgue, and that morgue was not in the same space as his current location; she couldn’t hear him, and he couldn’t sense her presence, hence no response was heard.
Thinking this, Tang Ye decided to take action, but before he moved, he glanced around. The recycling depot was eerie, especially the corridors. Even yesterday, when they drove the wooden cart, with that speed, before the Apocalypse it was enough to run from Xi River city to the neighboring Liyang City. The distance could be considered neither short nor long, but for Tang Ye, it didn’t matter. Yet, this short stretch of road could possibly present an anomaly.
Things like monsters suddenly appearing were not a threat to Tang Ye here; his least fear were these, but what he feared most was suddenly becoming blind. While it was true that he could see everything clearly in the darkness of the deep corridors with no light, what if it turned pitch black like yesterday?
Subconsciously thinking of taking a candle for precaution, but seeing the electric light overhead, Tang Ye was at a loss, it wasn’t possible to carry this thing along with him.
As he pondered how to deal with potential accidents in the deeper corridors, he noticed the paintings on the wall of the corridor once again.
"Eh?"
Tang Ye then realized that the paintings on the wall were not the same as what he and Lu Xiaojie saw when they entered last night. Last night, the paintings depicted a family enjoying dinner, but now, the paintings had completely lost any content. Starting from the first painting on Tang Ye’s left to the last one on the right, there were a total of eight paintings.
The content of the first painting was just a jumble of twisted lines, making it impossible to discern any pattern. The same was true for the second to the fifth and the eighth paintings, although the content of each painting was not the same.
In the sixth and seventh paintings, the content finally changed, with some shapes faintly visible, but it was still impossible to discern what the artist was trying to represent.
After a quick glance, Tang Ye shifted his focus away from the paintings, which seemed less exploratory than what he saw yesterday. Yesterday’s were masterpieces, whereas today’s looked more like the hasty scribbles of a child with a paintbrush.
Looking towards the deep end of the corridor, Tang Ye nodded and then shook his head, finally sighing, "Oh well, let’s see how it goes. Hope it’s not too bad."
Saying this, Tang Ye walked towards the deeper end of the corridor. As he moved, the light from the lamp gradually faded, and Tang Ye’s figure was eventually swallowed by the darkness.
Entering into the darkness, Tang Ye actually breathed a sigh of relief, feeling safe simply because his eyes could see further into the distance.
He followed the same route he and Lu Xiaojie had taken last night, but his memory was somewhat blurry, like a dream that would probably be entirely forgotten once awake unless it was a particularly impactful dream. Soon, Tang Ye stopped; he vaguely remembered that at a certain point when he and Lu Xiaojie had entered, she opened a room door and walked in.
On the way here, he had noticed several room doors, but these doors had no room numbers. Combined with the fuzziness of his memory, it was difficult for him to recall which room they had entered yesterday.
After passing another room door, Tang Ye gambled and opened the next door.
"Is it here?"
He couldn’t be sure, murmuring to himself, not knowing whom he was asking. He felt something was odd and didn’t understand what was going on.
The room behind the door was empty, with only beautiful horizontal fixtures; no other items were in it, just like the room they entered yesterday. It seemed that all the rooms in this corridor were arranged similarly!
"Well, let’s give it a try, if it’s wrong, I’ll come back," he thought.
Using the wooden cart as a milestone, if he saw the wooden cart, he should be on the right track. Then, Tang Ye entered the room, and in the darkness, he quickly locked onto another door diagonally to his left and swiftly moved towards it.
Then, he opened the door, and it also led to a corridor. Looking left and right, he seemed to spot a pile of flour bags in the distance on the right side of the corridor.
Spotting these objects, a smile spread across Tang Ye’s face. He remembered seeing these flour bags when он and Lu Xiaojie entered yesterday, and she even picked up a bag and put it on the wooden cart, but the direction seemed off?
He approached it, and further along, he saw a fork in the corridor. He remembered that there hadn’t been any forks last night.
Reaching the fork in the corridor, Tang Ye looked each way, didn’t spot the wooden cart, and immediately gave up on this path, turning to go back.
But at that moment, his ears seemed to catch an abnormal sound!
Thud, thud, thud!
"Who’s there?"
The sound resembled knocking, coming from behind. Upon hearing it, Tang Ye immediately ran towards the source, the sound growing louder in his ears, signaling that he was getting closer!
Soon, he arrived at a door, the sound had grown very loud. Without hesitation, he opened the door, but saw nothing, the knocking-like sound stopped abruptly!
