Chapter 1282: Chapter 1277: Two Zombies, Two People
Hearing Tagu’s words, the man next to Yao Gong chuckled and reached out to pass the Level 6 Evolution Crystal directly over. Before Tagu could even react, the blue crystal had slid into his pocket.
"Thanks. We’re off now."
Not giving Tagu a chance to speak, Yan Xing started the car and with a roaring sound, they quickly left the place.
"...This."
Tagu stood dazed for a long time, only coming back to his senses when Su Sigui and her companions’ car had dashed far away. With a resigned smile, he shouted after them, "Why not come in for a sit?"
"No need, we have other matters to attend to. See you another time." Xu Tianyu’s voice came through, and Tagu’s face broke into a smile hearing it. These young people—well, not all of them were necessarily young—but they were interesting.
Shaking his head, Tagu decided not to dwell on it. Although the blue crystal was indeed valuable, to an ordinary person it meant living a middle-class life without working within the Royal Court, without the need to go to the dangerous South for work.
Nightfall came quickly, and after securing their accommodation for the night, poor Yan Xing was assigned a dangerous task. Despite his reluctance, under Su Sigui’s pressure, he had no choice but to carry it out.
The nighttime Royal Court resembled a city before the Apocalypse—lights blazing, with dazzling neon spread everywhere. It seemed as if this city had always been here, wholly unaffected by the Apocalypse.
Yan Xing stood on a street corner, lost in thought for a while. In that moment, he felt as if he had returned to the time when his master passed away from illness and he inherited his mantle, holding that letter of introduction to enter a high-rise that he couldn’t have imagined; that was the location of the most mysterious organization in China.
His story began much like those described in online novels, with a young martial god descending from the mountains, loli, royal sisters, and rich beauties coming one after another, playing the pig to eat the tiger, punching out rich second generations, kicking down the dark forces—all of it full of anticipation. Yet, reality is always reality. To ordinary people, his identity was indeed mysterious and desirable, but in truth, he and the other Dragon Group members were no different, possessing special skills unlike average people, working special jobs.
As time passed, he lost the drive of his youth, now only wishing to quietly live out his life.
After the Apocalypse, everything he saw before was no longer within reach, and being in a special organization, he quickly realized that human society would become something else altogether once New Humans appeared. So he organized some of his close colleagues to prepare for future eventualities.
But the life he lived before the Apocalypse, from that point on, seemed to become an ephemeral dream, hazy and unreal.
Now standing here, gazing at a corner of the city, Yan Xing felt as if he was brought back to the moment when, after his master’s death by illness, he held onto his master’s only wish and arrived at that city so foreign to him.
The neon lights made him feel inferior; even the cars that once would draw countless onlookers were commonplace here, and the ever-flashing screens atop the buildings made him feel so out of place from this world.
The feeling of returning to that moment made Yan Xing feel nostalgic, but also had a hint of self-mockery.
However, he soon snapped back to reality; this was not that era, this was the Apocalypse, and this place was merely a Sanctuary City.
A car passed by him, the cold wind it raised blowing through his hair. For some reason, ever since Su Sigui forced him to follow her around, his luck had been terribly bad, especially with bets; he always ended up the unluckiest one. Like just now, drawing lots to decide who would go find Ha Zhen, and unsurprisingly, he was the one.
Facing the cold air blowing from the North, Yan Xing quickly found the place. From a distance, he could see Ha Zhen’s weapon shop door; different from other welcoming open stores, Ha Zhen’s shop had its rolling shutter door half-closed, through which one could see the flickering lights and shadowy figures moving within.
Hesitant for a moment, Yan Xing steadied his emotions and walked toward the entrance of Ha Zhen’s shop, gently opening the door. Unlike the afternoon, the shop now featured a table in the center with attack organs retrieved from high-level zombies, and beside Ha Zhen, there were three people Yan Xing didn’t recognize. Among them, he could tell one person had the distinct features of a Chinese person.
"Ha Zhen, this suits me well. Take it back and revive it for me. Also, that eye you showed me a few days ago, it’s not for me; it’s for the Duke. He seems to want to experiment with it, sigh... The last time he destroyed the boss’s collection, I saw our boss’s face turn black, and he still dares to do it."
"Heh heh, you know as well as I do that Mad Xu is crazier than me. Let him be; as long as it’s not our misfortune, we’ll let Brother Hu give him a good beating, and that will calm him down for a while."
"Hahaha, I can’t help but laugh when you bring that up. Do you think this time he might provoke..."
The short man sitting next to Ha Zhen hadn’t even finished speaking when the rolling shutter door was pulled open, making a "whirring" sound.
In an instant, all four people inside the shop turned their gazes toward the newcomer at the door.
"Four people? No, not all are human!"
Yan Xing quickly scanned the four individuals, noting that two of them, including Ha Zhen, bore no trace of living tissue, while the other two were bona fide Level 8 New Humans.
He swiftly recorded the basic racial identities of the four in his mind: Ha Zhen and the man who appeared only 1.4 meters tall from a distance, almost like a child, were Level 8 zombies. The other two, one a tall man over two meters tall from the grasslands and the other a man with a particularly ugly face, covered in black transparent shell-like scales, were humans.
Both were evolved mutants, but one was more like a zombie in terms of power while the other had an even stranger evolution, the man with skin-covered black transparent plates likely possessed very high defensive capabilities.
The moment Yan Xing appeared before them, their previously engaged conversation abruptly ceased, and he himself couldn’t believe his eyes; he was certain that Ha Zhen and the short man were zombies, but to see humans and zombies chatting so harmoniously was incredibly bizarre!
