Chapter 1114: Chapter 1111: Where Did That Guy Go?
The dormitory was filled with an indescribable sense of oppression, unspoken, as if living in a world of black and white animation.
Inside, everything was filled with irony.
Lying in bed, Xiao Hu stared at the bottom of the upper bunk for a while, then he lay down and looked at the toiletries he’d set under his bed. Fearful they might be tampered with by unfriendly roommates in the night, he grabbed a steel cup from on top and placed it beside him.
Then, he quietly lay in his bed, blankly staring at the wooden board above, not asleep, just gazing at it, his expression vacant. Gradually, tears traced their way down his face.
"Why! Why treat me this way, what did I do wrong?"
He felt the world was incredibly unfair toward him. In his mind, he had done nothing wrong, or hadn’t done anything at all, yet trouble inexplicably kept finding him.
Anger crept into Xiao Hu’s eyes, feeling as though the heavens were set against him in everything he did!
The more he thought, the angrier he became, his fists unconsciously clenching and starting to tremble violently!
His eyes filled with resentment, as if wanting to tear everything apart, his sense of grievance turning into a roar within him, filling his heart with a destructive frenzy!
In his mind’s eye, images kept flashing, his way of venting after being hurt. Faces he despised appeared one after another, and he fantasized about becoming very powerful someday, even surpassing the Marshal of the United District.
Then, he imagined concealing his strength, revealing his true power in front of the girl he loved at an unexpected moment to alter her perception of him completely.
Face after detestable face was crushed under his feet, bringing him great satisfaction. He completely forgot what kind of person he was in reality. Although daydreaming didn’t make him any stronger, it felt good!
Time slowly passed, and in the dormitory, snoring began to rise, with more and more snortlike sounds emerging with each breath.
Xiao Hu didn’t know how long he had been in this state, but the daydreaming had notably improved his mood, as if the fantasies had really allowed him to beat up those who bullied him!
Hoping to get some sleep because he had a duty shift the next day, Xiao Hu turned over and covered himself with the blanket. But the next second, he seemed to remember something, hurriedly pulling a folded blank sheet of paper from the pocket of the clothes hanging beside him.
"I almost forgot."
Muttering to himself, Xiao Hu patted his head and then took out a pen from another pocket. He propped up his pillow against his chest, placed a book in front of him, and unfolded the blank sheet, uncapped the pen, and turned on his cell phone.
The phone’s light was the only illumination in the dark dormitory as it powered on.
Checking the phone, the displayed time was 02:05:19.
It was now deep into the night, and in the noisy yet silent surroundings, he believed he was the only person struggling to sleep.
Resting his head on the pillow, Xiao Hu wiped away the tears at the corner of his eyes.
Then he began to write and draw on the blank sheet of paper.
In the deep of night, Xiao Hu concentrated but remained oblivious to his surroundings. Accidentally, his arm knocked against the steel cup he had placed at the side of his bed.
Clang!
The sudden noise, though insignificant in regular circumstances, was like a bomb going off in the snoring-filled night, or at least that’s how Xiao Hu saw it!
The unexpected sound startled Xiao Hu, who had been focused on his task. He quickly looked under the bed, where his cup had fallen and made the sound.
Glancing around, it seemed no one had awakened. Relieved, Xiao Hu bent down to pick up his cup and resumed writing on the paper.
But he forgot that Old Cao was a light sleeper, and at the sound, he woke up almost immediately.
Looking beside him, he saw Xiao Hu writing something on a piece of paper, frowned, but ultimately Old Cao didn’t pay it much mind. In this dormitory, all the residents, including Old Cao himself, had come to treat Xiao Hu as if he were invisible.
Thinking this, Old Cao tried to go back to sleep; however, he found it hard to do so as the sound of the pen scratching back and forth on the paper incessantly reached his ears.
Instead of feeling annoyed, he found the sound of the pen moving on the paper – "swish, swish, swish" – unexpectedly pleasant, like the sound of rain, strangely comforting.
This made him want to continue listening for a while.
After about two or three minutes, it seemed that Xiao Hu had finished whatever he had been writing.
He folded the completed paper and placed it under his pillow, then switched off the light from his phone, covered himself with his blanket, and began to sleep.
All of this was witnessed by Old Cao, who lay in the bed across. After Xiao Hu was covered and asleep, Old Cao also buried his head and slowly drifted off.
The early sun rose, scattering the far darkness bit by bit, and the dark sky began to reveal its true azure.
Soldiers, rejuvenated from a night’s sleep, were getting up one by one, starting their first essential task of the day. Time flew, and soon, the shy newborn sun climbed to the central sky, its scorching rays making the earth transparent. Its intense light displayed a majestic posture, some soldiers stared at the sun, and though it was blinding, for some reason, it kindled a sense of loneliness in their hearts.
Perhaps the earth’s longest companion was this very sun. Day after day, people would see it, but times had changed. Humanity had gone from being lords of the earth to timid creatures cowering in their shells, no longer capable of dominating the world.
Elsewhere, Old Cao and a few roommates carried their meals from the cafeteria, chatting and laughing on their way back to the dormitory.
Upon entering the dormitory, they found it unusual that Xiao Hu, who was normally the first person they’d see, was not there.
But no one really cared where he might have gone.
Only the soldier at the farthest end asked, "Where did that guy go?"
