Chapter 1048: Chapter 1044: Jibian 9
"Move, grab your weapons, and ask them who they are. If anything is amiss, shoot immediately without hesitation!" Wei Ba ordered as he picked up his own weapon and gestured for everyone to follow him toward the group of Peace Party soldiers.
In the shelter, they were always reminded not to trust anyone on the surface when the scouting teams were sent out to explore.
Because in the face of disaster, human morality could be destroyed, amplifying the darkness within, leading to the loss of all humanity. It could be said that the people on the surface were no longer human, but merely beasts in human form.
As Wei Ba approached the Peace Party soldiers, they seemed to sense his group’s presence as well.
"Wait, they don’t look like city residents."
"Yeah!"
"Who are they?"
"Get ready for combat!"
A few Peace Party soldiers quickly got into combat readiness, picking up their weapons and fixing their gaze on Wei Ba’s group as they approached. Actually, they had spotted Wei Ba’s group earlier but had assumed they were residents of Longyang City, and thus, of no importance.
However, as Wei Ba’s group got closer, the Peace Party soldiers realized something was off. The equipment on them, although not as advanced as exoskeleton armor, coupled with an aura of having survived countless brushes with death, seemed formidable to the Peace Party soldiers!
They were clearly well-trained soldiers!
Another thing that set the group apart was their pale skin – the kind of paleness that comes from never going outside and not being exposed to the sun for long periods, a stark contrast to the people living through the Apocalypse.
"Who are you!"
The leader of the Peace Party soldiers shouted at Wei Ba’s group. However, seeing the other side lifting their weapons and pointing them in their direction, they, too, aimed their guns back.
The two groups faced each other in a standoff. Wei Ba exchanged glances with another soldier, then nodded; the tension in their eyes eased. To them, these odd soldiers were merely Level 1 and Level 2 evolved beings. If it came to a fight, his side wouldn’t be the ones to lose.
The Peace Party soldiers, on the other hand, looked grave.
"Damn, there are two Level 4 New Humans, and the rest are all Level 3!"
"Where did these people come from?"
Again, none of the Peace Party soldiers dared to take it lightly; they all pressed the retract button on their exoskeleton suits.
Just as Wei Ba still thought the strange-looking people’s equipment was inferior to his, he suddenly saw them enveloped in armor, with all-encompassing combat helmets shimmering in the light.
Wei Ba and his group were bewildered.
What kind of equipment was this? How had they never seen it before? Had they missed out on a lot during their years in the shelter, becoming too obsolete?
"And who are you?" Wei Ba dropped his contempt. The enemy was now enveloped in exoskeleton armor, and without knowing the defense capabilities these suits provided, they couldn’t afford to underestimate their opponents. A misstep could come with a great cost.
"We are the duty squad of the 11th Battalion of the Fifth Army Corps from the United District. Where are you from, and why haven’t we seen you before?"
"The United District, what place is that?"
The soldiers of the Peace Party kept a watchful eye on Wei Ba and his group, guarding against any small movements they made.
However, Wei Ba and his companions were also clueless; the combination of the three characters that made up ’United District’ was too foreign to them. What exactly had happened on the surface? Had the people re-established a governmental system?
Wei Ba’s gaze lingered on the soldiers in front of him, observing intently. The weapons in their hands looked nothing like guns. He didn’t know what they were, but he could sense danger emanating from those weapons.
"We are people from a shelter."
"From the shelter?"
A few of the Peace Party soldiers were also taken aback. Then one of them looked at Wei Ba, puzzled, and asked, "If you had good days in the shelter, what are you doing out here?"
Hearing that they were people from a shelter, all of the Peace Party soldiers let out a sigh of relief. No wonder these few soldiers’ weapons were so primitive—they were all from a shelter. If that was the case, their exoskeleton suits should give them the power to fight, though they wouldn’t be the victors.
Wei Ba smiled. It seemed the people on the surface were approachable and not as bad as they had anticipated.
"Let’s put down our weapons, gentlemen. We have no ill intent. The reasons we came out from the shelter are, firstly, because our shelter’s power supply system is damaged, and secondly, we wanted to scout the situation on the surface."
"Oh, right, there’s one more thing. It’s this."
While speaking, Wei Ba took out a file bag from his backpack and tossed it towards one of the Peace Party soldiers in front of him.
"What is this?" The soldier in front caught it with one hand, his curiosity piqued as he untied the string sealing the file bag. Inside were five or six sheets of paper filled with dense text.
At the very top, one line was most conspicuous—it read "Political Restoration Plan."
The atmosphere between the two parties fell into a brief silence as a few Peace Party soldiers gathered to examine the contents on the five or six sheets of paper.
The bureaucratic tone was heavy in the content, yet the message was straightforward. The Apocalypse had just broken out not long before, and the disaster didn’t strike in just one place; it was global!
Zombies were everywhere, and almost every city was in the same situation. Although the central government at the time was desperately carrying out rescue operations, no rescue team could completely turn the tide. In such a circumstance, the collapse of human governments was inevitable, and this matter required careful long-term planning.
When the shelters were taking in survivors, besides those professionals who played a role in the development of society, there were also officials. The duty of these officials was to, one day when the shelters were opened, rebuild the political systems from before the Apocalypse on the surface. After all, before the Apocalypse, China’s national cohesion was strong, making it easy to mobilize.
The six sheets of paper in this file bag were, rather than just paper, more akin to a token!
Of course, the central government in the early Apocalypse also considered the possibility of encountering rulers who had established their own forces and would confront the pre-Apocalypse political system for their rights. However, this wasn’t a big deal because the vast numbers of zombies wouldn’t allow the subjects of these rulers to live as they had before the Apocalypse.
Before the Apocalypse, China was in a golden age of peace, and no one living in the midst of the Apocalypse would refuse anything from before the Apocalypse.
The idea was good, but after reading it, the Peace Party soldiers could only laugh!
