Chapter 70: The Race and the Unexpected Attack
---
The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as the crowd gathered for the much-awaited race.
The field, vibrant with the chatter of students and spectators, reflected the tension in the air.
Adam sat quietly on the bench, his lean frame relaxed but his eyes focused.
Beside him, Eric leaned back, his carefree demeanor masking an undercurrent of excitement.
"Adam, this is your moment," Eric said, playfully patting Adam on the shoulder. "Show them what you’re made of."
Adam smirked faintly but said nothing.
The announcement rang out loud and clear from the teacher stationed near the track,
"All participants for the 200-meter race, please come forward!" The crowd erupted in cheers as the participants began moving toward the starting line.
Among the noise, Adam’s parents stood out, their supportive cries booming above the rest.
His father, a reserved man by nature, seemed uncharacteristically vocal, while his mother’s enthusiasm was boundless.
Nearby, Eric’s parents matched their energy, their shouts urging Adam to victory.
Adam felt a tinge of embarrassment at the attention but quickly composed himself, rising with quiet determination.
As Adam approached the track, he spotted Robin, his classmate and competitor, taking his position beside him. Robin’s smirk carried a mix of confidence and provocation.
Leaning closer, Robin muttered, "Today, you’re going down. And when I win, I’ll make sure everyone here remembers it. Maybe I’ll even humiliate you in front of your precious parents."
Adam turned to Robin, his lips curling into an amused smile. "You’re thinking far ahead," he replied calmly. "But have you ever wondered what happens if I win? What I might do to you?"
Robin’s confidence faltered for a moment as Adam’s words planted a seed of doubt in his mind.
Adam noted the subtle shift in Robin’s expression—the hesitance, the unspoken fear.
Robin tried to brush it off, reassuring himself, No, he can’t be that fast. He’s never run before, at least not infront of me. But the nagging doubt refused to leave, worming its way deeper into his thoughts.
The teacher’s voice cut through the air, pulling everyone’s focus. "Participants, take your positions!"
Adam and the other racers nodded, stepping up to the starting line. Robin took a deep breath, trying to shake off his growing uncertainty, while Adam stood calm, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
The Race Begins
The teacher raised his hand, his voice ringing out: "Ready... set... GO!"
The racers launched forward as the crowd erupted in cheers. Adam and Robin quickly took the lead, their strides powerful and swift.
Robin’s initial burst of speed gave him a slight advantage. This is easy, he thought, his confidence rebuilding. I’ve got this in the bag.
But then, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Adam. Despite the distance Robin had gained, Adam’s silhouette loomed closer. Each stride Adam took was calculated, steady, and unnervingly fast.
Robin’s chest tightened as he turned his head slightly to confirm what he’d seen—Adam was catching up. The doubts he had buried earlier surged back with a vengeance. How is he this fast? This doesn’t make sense!
The memory of his taunts echoed in his mind, along with the horrifying image of Adam turning the tables. What if I lose? What if he does to me what I said I’d do to him? The thought was enough to unsettle Robin’s rhythm.
Meanwhile, Adam’s focus remained unwavering. His mind was a fortress, shielded from the noise of the crowd and the doubts that plagued his rival.
For weeks, Adam had been training, following Pratham’s guidance to hone his physical abilities. Coupled with his newfound strength, he felt unstoppable.
As Adam surged ahead, leaving Robin behind, the difference in their mental states became clear.
Robin, consumed by fear and uncertainty, began to falter. His steps lost their rhythm, his confidence crumbling under the weight of his own thoughts.
The gap widened. Robin’s once-proud expression twisted into one of despair as Adam crossed the finish line with ease.
Robin stops in the middle of the track, his legs giving up and everyone else overtakes him in the race.
The teacher’s voice boomed over the loudspeakers: "First place: Adam! Disqualified: Robin!"
The crowd erupted in cheers, Adam’s parents among the loudest. Even Eric’s parents joined in, their voices full of pride. Eric turned to his friend Leo with a triumphant grin.
"See? I told you he’d win! That’s our friend out there!"
Leo, still in shock, laughed nervously. "I didn’t believe he had it in him," he admitted, patting Eric on the shoulder.
Near the stands, Ani, clapped enthusiastically, ignoring the pain in her knee. Her energy was contagious, prompting Monica to join in.
As Adam walked back toward his friends, his face broke into a rare smile. But his moment of joy was short-lived. His gaze fell on Ani, and his expression shifted instantly.
Ani noticed the change, puzzled by the sudden seriousness in Adam’s demeanor. She opened her mouth to ask what was wrong, but before she could, Adam started running—straight toward her.
Adam’s sudden sprint caught everyone’s attention. Eric turned to Leo, confused. "Why is Adam running toward Ani?"
Leo’s face darkened. "Something’s wrong."
Without another word, Leo began running after Adam.
"Ani, move!" Adam’s shout cut through the air, startling Ani.
She froze, unsure of what was happening. Her confusion deepened as she glanced to her side and saw Shreya. The look in Shreya’s eyes was anything but friendly.
Before Ani could react, Shreya’s nails slashed across Ani’s shoulder, tearing through her white uniform and leaving deep, bloody gashes. Ani cried out in pain, stumbling backward as blood began to seep through the fabric.
The crowd gasped, the cheerful atmosphere replaced by a tense silence.
All the people present there are watching this whole scene, no one can believe their eyes, what are they seeing and they cannot understand what has happened.
Then Adam’s voice echoes again, "Everyone move away from Shreya."
Adam runs with all his might so that he can reach Ani on time.
The Chapter ends at this point with everyone’s surprised expressions, including Adam, running towards Ani.
