Chapter 65: The Burden of a Vampire
Chapter 65: The Burden of a Vampire
The air was heavy with tension, a palpable chill that seemed to seep into Adam’s very bones.
The dimly lit room carried the faint scent of mildew, mingled with something far more metallic and sinister—blood.
Adam’s eyes remained fixed on the man before him, who now crouched, trembling, saliva dripping from his gaping mouth.
The sight was grotesque: two razor-sharp fangs had begun to protrude from his upper jaw, and his eyes, once human, glowed a deep crimson.
Adam felt an unsettling shift in the atmosphere, a feral energy emanating from the man.
Before Adam could react, Sona’s voice rang out, her tone laced with alarm.
"Lord Adam, I can sense a murderous aura emanating from him. It’s overwhelming."
The man let out a guttural growl, a sound that sent shivers down Adam’s spine.
His nails began to elongate, sharpening into deadly claws, and veins bulged grotesquely across his arms as if they might burst.
Adam muttered to himself, "I shouldn’t have provoked him..." He took a cautious step back, raising his hand in a calming gesture.
But the man was beyond reason. In a blur, he charged at Adam, his speed far surpassing that of any normal human.
Adam barely had time to shout, "Sona, let me know if anyone else approaches!" before bracing himself for the attack.
The man was on him in seconds, his claws slicing through the air toward Adam’s face.
But before the attack could land, the man froze mid-air, suspended by an invisible force.
Adam glanced back at Sona, who hovered behind him, her eyes glowing faintly as she focused her telekinetic power on the assailant.
Taking advantage of the pause, Adam clenched his fist and delivered a powerful punch to the man’s face.
The impact was deafening, and the crimson glow in the man’s eyes flickered, fading briefly to black before reigniting.
Adam didn’t hesitate. He unleashed a flurry of punches—left, right, left, right—each blow landing with bone-crushing force.
The man hung motionless in the air, blood splattering with each strike.
Finally, after a relentless assault, the crimson glow faded completely, and the man’s claws and fangs retracted. He groaned in pain, his voice trembling.
"Stop... please... it hurts..."
Adam paused, breathing heavily, and turned to Sona. "Release him," he commanded.
Sona nodded, her telekinetic hold dissipating. The man collapsed to the floor, gasping for air.
He looked up at Adam, tears streaming down his face, a pitiful sight for someone who moments ago had been a vicious predator.
Adam crouched to the man’s level, his expression cold yet curious. "Now tell me, what kind of power do you have?"
The man began to sob uncontrollably, his shoulders shaking with the weight of some unseen burden. Adam, unprepared for such a reaction, frowned.
"Please," the man whimpered. "Kill me... I can’t take this anymore."
Adam leaned back slightly, taken aback. "What are you talking about?" he demanded, his voice edged with irritation.
The man’s sobs turned to ragged breaths as he looked up at Adam, despair etched across his face. "I don’t want to live like this. Please, end it..."
Adam was about to respond when his sharp gaze caught something disturbing: the man’s injuries—deep bruises and gashes—were healing at an alarming rate.
His fangs and claws began to re-emerge, and the crimson hue returned to his eyes.
Sona’s voice broke through Adam’s thoughts. "Lord Adam, his regenerative abilities are terrifying. Even after your relentless attack, his body is recovering too quickly."
Adam activated his telekinesis once more, pinning the man to the floor.
The man struggled, growling and writhing, his nails clawing at the ground.
Adam clenched his jaw, his mind racing. ’What kind of power is this? To heal so fast and regain strength even after that beating... This is no ordinary ability.’
"Sona," Adam said, glancing at her, "can you calm his mind?"
Sona hesitated, her expression conflicted. "I’ll try, but his mental state is... fractured."
She floated forward, her hands glowing with a soft, white light. Her eyes mirrored the glow as she focused on the man.
The energy she emitted bathed the room in an ethereal aura, and Adam watched as the crimson in the man’s eyes began to fade.
His claws and fangs retracted once more, leaving him seemingly normal.
When she finished, Sona’s face was pale with exertion.
She looked back at Adam. "Lord Adam, his mind is completely warped. I don’t think this is something that can ever be fully fixed."
Adam frowned. "What do you mean?"
Sona shook her head. "It’s like... his very soul has been twisted. I’ve never seen anything like it."
Adam deactivated his telekinesis and sat across from the man, who now seemed calmer, though his eyes were empty, devoid of emotion. "You’re going to answer my questions now," Adam said firmly. "Who are you?"
The man hesitated before replying in a monotone voice, "My name is David."
"What is your power?" Adam pressed.
David’s lip quivered. "It’s not a power... it’s a curse," he whispered.
Adam leaned forward, intrigued. "Curse? Explain."
David’s voice cracked as he began to recount his story. "I was just a jeweler... closing my shop late one night. On my way home, I saw a boy, no older than eighteen, sitting alone in an alley. He had red eyes and black hair, wore glasses... he looked like a normal student. I thought he might be in trouble, so I approached him."
David paused, his hands trembling. "But that was my mistake. That boy... he gave me this curse. He didn’t ask, didn’t warn me. He just... gave it to me."
Adam’s mind raced. ’A boy with the ability to transfer powers—or curses?’
"What does this curse do to you?" Adam asked.
David’s voice grew more desperate. "It makes me thirst for blood. I can heal from any wound, and I’m faster and stronger than any human. But I’ve lost control over myself. I’ve killed people... even my own family. I handed over my daughter to him... to that boy..." His voice broke into anguished sobs.
Adam clenched his fists, struggling to suppress his frustration. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, but the picture they formed was far more horrifying than he had anticipated.
---
Sona suddenly stumbled, her glowing eyes dimming. "Lord Adam... I can’t hold back the power in his mind much longer," she gasped.
Adam turned to David. "Tell me everything you know, now!"
David’s bloodshot eyes met Adam’s, a glimmer of relief shining through. "Promise me," he said weakly, "promise me you’ll kill me after this..."
Adam hesitated but finally nodded. "Fine. I promise."
A faint smile crossed David’s face. "Thank you..."
David took a shuddering breath before continuing. "That boy... he told me that when his lord summons us, we must obey. His lord... he’s more powerful than any vampire I’ve ever known."
Adam’s mind reeled. ’A lord commanding vampires? This is bigger than I thought.’
"Is there anything else?" Adam demanded.
David shook his head. "No... that’s all I know."
Adam stood, his expression grim. "Then I’ll keep my promise."
The Chapter ends with Adam preparing to fulfill David’s final request, his mind swirling with questions and an ominous sense of foreboding.
