Chapter 55: The Encounter in the Park
Adam silently followed the girl from a distance. His black outfit, the dark mask concealing most of his face, and his quiet, deliberate movements made him an enigmatic presence.
His companion, Sona, hovered invisibly above, keeping a watchful eye on their target.
The girl’s hurried pace and frequent glances over her shoulder only added to her air of suspicion.
"She’s entering the park now," Sona informed Adam, her voice calm but firm.
Adam nodded and quickened his pace. The streets were dimly lit, and the park ahead seemed almost desolate.
"Sona, scan the area. How many people are nearby?" he asked, his voice a low whisper that carried an edge of authority.
"Not many," Sona replied after a brief pause. "The park is almost empty."
Hearing this, Adam adjusted his trajectory and stepped off the road, entering the park. A cool breeze rustled the leaves as he walked deeper into its quiet expanse.
A short distance ahead, the girl came to a stop in an isolated area, pulling out a wad of cash and counting it hurriedly.
Sona hovered above her, watching her movements closely.
Adam exhaled slowly, steadying himself. Why am I even doing this? he thought. His steps were deliberate as he approached the girl, his presence becoming more noticeable with every stride.
The girl’s ears twitched at the faint sound of approaching footsteps.
She froze momentarily before turning around, her eyes locking onto Adam.
His appearance was starkly contrasting to the tranquil park setting—dressed in a pink shirt and green pants, with a matching green tie that gave him a strangely formal yet misplaced look.
His violet eyes glinted under the faint light, and his jet-black hair was neatly combed, making him appear like a boy of 18 or 19 with a peculiar aura of mystery.
Her breath hitched, and panic flickered in her eyes. Hastily, she clutched her money, gathering it with trembling hands. She stood abruptly and began to walk away.
"Wait!" Adam called out, his voice carrying an unyielding command. "Don’t go. I just want to talk."
The girl ignored him, her pace quickening. Adam clenched his fists. She’s scared. This isn’t going well.
As the girl prepared to run, she felt her body stiffen.
Panic surged as she realized she couldn’t move. Her legs refused to respond, and she stood frozen in place.
"What’s happening? Why can’t I move?" she cried, her voice trembling with fear.
Adam rushed to her side, his face hiding the faint guilt flickering in his eyes. "Sona, release her," he said sharply.
"Fine," Sona replied, deactivating her telekinesis. The girl stumbled slightly, regaining control of her limbs.
She spun around, her wide eyes filled with terror and disbelief.
"You—" she stammered, her voice rising. "Do you have powers too?"
Adam sighed, stepping back to give her space. "We need to talk somewhere private. There’s too much risk here."
The girl’s fear deepened. Her mind raced with escape plans, but before she could act, Adam reached out and gently grabbed her wrist.
His grip was firm but not aggressive. "Listen," he said, his voice low and steady. "I’m asking you nicely. Come with me. I don’t want to hurt you, but I can’t let you walk away, either."
Great. I sound like a villain, Adam thought bitterly.
Reluctantly, the girl allowed herself to be led to a nearby swing set.
Adam guided her to sit while he stood a few feet away, his towering presence blocking her path to freedom.
The girl’s mind churned, calculating her chances of escape.
Her hands clutched the edges of the swing as her eyes darted around, searching for an opening.
Finally, she broke the silence. "What do you want from me?"
Adam crossed his arms, his violet eyes narrowing. "Who are you? And more importantly, do you have powers?"
The girl’s face turned pale. She opened her mouth to deny it, but Adam cut her off. "Don’t bother lying. I can sense it. Your power is weak compared to mine, but it’s there. If I wanted to, I could end this right here."
Tears welled up in her eyes, and her voice cracked as she stammered, "Please... I don’t want any trouble."
Sona’s voice interrupted sharply, her tone scolding. "Lord Adam, stop scaring her. She’s terrified. Be more considerate."
Adam sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. This isn’t working. I’m making things worse.
"Listen," he said finally, softening his tone. "I don’t know what your power is, but this is for your own good. There are others out there—people far more dangerous than me. They won’t hesitate to hurt you or worse. I just need to know what I’m dealing with so I can help you."
The girl’s trembling lessened slightly, though she still eyed Adam warily. He doesn’t seem like the others, she thought. But can I trust him?
After a tense silence, the girl spoke hesitantly. "My name is Lisa. I’m not from this city. I... I do have a power." Her voice dropped to a whisper as she continued,
"I can temporarily transform objects into anything I want by touching them. But it’s not permanent, and it drains my energy—sometimes so much that I can’t move for hours."
She looked away, her voice thick with emotion. "I use it to create things I can sell in other cities. My family... they’re struggling. This is the only way I can help them."
Adam stared at her, his expression unreadable on his face. Her story hit him harder than he expected. She’s just trying to survive, he thought. And here I am, acting like some comic-book villain.
"Thank you for telling me," Adam said finally, his tone gentler. "I’m not here to hurt you, Lisa. I just need to make sure you’re safe."
Lisa nodded slowly, her fear giving way to cautious relief. "What now?" she asked quietly.
"Don’t worry, I don’t have to do anything to you. I was just asking for your own good." Adam
