Chapter 208: Akiara’s Introduction

Chapter: Akiara’s Introduction

---

As the sun sets, Adam walks through a quiet park in Lisa’s city. The fading orange light filters through the trees, casting long shadows on the empty benches and paths.

Adam’s sharp eyes scan the area until they settle on Lisa, who is sitting on a bench, waiting patiently.

Beside her is a petite girl, whose black hair shines in the dim light.

Her pink frock contrasts with the dark surroundings, making her look like an innocent child out of place in the serious atmosphere.

Adam approaches, his steps deliberate, and his usual stern expression softens slightly upon seeing Lisa.

She beams and jumps up from her seat, running toward him.

"Adam-senpai!" Lisa’s voice rings out cheerfully. "I’m so glad you came. You’ve changed a lot since I last saw you!"

Adam raises an eyebrow, slightly taken aback. "Changed? It’s only been a few months. I don’t think I’ve changed that much."

Lisa shakes her head vigorously, her expression animated. "No, no! You have! Your appearance looks sharper somehow. Like... more mature."

Adam frowns, her words making him feel unexpectedly self-conscious. "I haven’t paid much attention to myself lately. Maybe you’re imagining things."

Adam clears his throat, quickly shifting the subject. He gestures toward the girl sitting on the bench. "Are you going to introduce me to your friend, or are we just going to keep standing here?"

Lisa grins, her excitement uncontainable. "Of course! Senpai, this is Akiara. She’s like us—a power holder."

The girl stands and bows politely. Her black eyes, though calm, hold a certain depth. "My name is Akiara, and I’m 15 years old, even though I don’t look like it."

Adam blinks, his gaze assessing her critically. "Fifteen? You could’ve fooled me. You look much younger."

Akiara flushes slightly but keeps her composure. "I get that a lot. But I assure you, I’m telling the truth."

Adam leans slightly forward, his curiosity piqued. "Akiara, tell me about your power. What can you do?"

Akiara’s face brightens at the opportunity. She steps forward confidently. "I can swap the positions of objects. Let me show you."

Lisa pulls a coin from her pocket and places it in Akiara’s hand. Akiara’s eyes faintly glow, a soft shimmer that doesn’t escape Adam’s sharp gaze. Suddenly, the coin vanishes from her hand and reappears on a nearby stone.

Adam nods, his expression neutral but his tone approving. "Impressive. That’s a useful ability."

Lisa claps her hands together, her pride evident. "See, Senpai? Didn’t I tell you? Akiara is amazing!"

Adam raises a hand, signaling her to stop. Lisa falls silent, her enthusiasm dimming under Adam’s serious demeanor. She instinctively knows what’s coming and braces herself.

Adam turns his gaze toward Akiara, his tone measured but firm. "Akiara, I don’t know your intentions."

Before he can continue, Akiara interrupts, her voice hurried and defensive. "I don’t have any bad intentions, I swear!"

Adam narrows his eyes, holding up a hand to quiet her. "Let me finish."

Akiara’s face turns red, and she nods, biting her lip nervously.

Adam’s tone hardens. "I don’t care about your past or what brought you here. But if your presence causes any harm to Lisa or her family, I won’t forgive you."

His words hang heavy in the air, and both girls feel the weight of his gaze.

Lisa’s heart races, a mix of fear and gratitude swirling within her. She knows Adam is only trying to protect her, but the intensity of his words unsettles her.

Akiara stammers, her voice trembling. "I-I understand. I promise, I’ll never let anything bad happen to Lisa. She’s my friend now."

Adam watches her for a moment, his face unreadable. Then he nods slowly, his tone softening. "Good. If your intentions are pure, then you have nothing to fear. You can stay with Lisa."

Lisa exhales in relief, her smile returning as she steps closer to Adam. "Thank you, Senpai. I’m so happy you care this much about me. But honestly, Akiara isn’t as bad as you think. She’s kind and just as scared as I was when I met you."

Adam’s expression softens ever so slightly. "I hope you’re right, Lisa. For both your sakes."

Akiara looks up at Adam, her earlier nervousness replaced by quiet determination. "Thank you for trusting me, Adam-senpai. I won’t let you down."

Adam gives a faint smile, though his mind is already moving to the next step. The mission wasn’t over yet, and Akiara was just one piece in a much larger puzzle.

The park grows quieter as the sun dips below the horizon.

The golden-orange glow fades, leaving behind the gentle hum of streetlights flickering to life.

Adam stands silently, his arms crossed as he listens to Akiara. Her small frame trembles slightly as she gathers the courage to speak, her dark eyes fixed on the ground.

"I understand why you’re being so cautious, Adam-senpai," Akiara begins, her voice soft but steady. "It’s because of people like me. I’ve lived my whole life without family or guidance. Growing up in an orphanage, I never had anyone to teach me the difference between right and wrong. They just left us to fend for ourselves."

Adam remains silent, his piercing gaze studying her intently. He’s not entirely convinced of Akiara’s intentions, but something in her voice hints at a truth he can’t ignore.

Akiara’s hands tremble slightly as she continues. "When my powers manifested, everything changed. Suddenly, people wanted to be my friend. For the first time, I felt like I belonged. But... I was naïve." She pauses, swallowing hard.

"The people I trusted—my so-called friends—they only wanted to use me. They saw me as nothing more than a tool."

Lisa, who is sitting beside her, listens intently, her face a mix of surprise and sympathy. "I never knew, Akiara," Lisa whispers, her voice trembling with emotion.

Akiara shakes her head, giving Lisa a weak smile. "I never told you because I didn’t want you to see me as broken. But meeting you... it changed me. When you confronted me about my powers and warned me not to misuse them, I was angry at first. I thought you were just like everyone else, trying to control me."

Her gaze shifts to Adam. "But then Lisa told me about you, Adam-senpai. She told me about your strength and your kindness. For the first time, I saw someone who truly cared about others, someone who could protect people like me. That’s when I decided to leave my past behind and start over."

Adam exhales deeply, his stern expression softening slightly. "Do you realize the danger you’ve put yourself in by revealing your powers to others?"

Akiara nods, her shoulders sagging. "I do now. I know that there are people out there who know my face and my abilities. But before I met Lisa, I didn’t understand the risks. I thought I could just run away from it all."

Adam narrows his eyes. "You can’t outrun the consequences of your actions, Akiara. But if you’re truly willing to change, then I’ll give you a chance. But hear me clearly—if I find out that your past follows you here, and it puts Lisa in danger, I won’t hesitate to act."

Lisa flinches slightly at Adam’s sharp tone but quickly recovers, her resolve strengthening. Akiara, on the other hand, stiffens, her wide eyes reflecting a mix of fear and determination. "I promise, Adam-senpai. I’ll never let anything happen to Lisa. I’ll protect her with everything I have."

Adam glances between the two girls, his tone softening. "Good. I’ll hold you to that promise. Until the Union can reach you, you two need to look out for each other. Lisa, Akiara—no matter what happens, you protect one another. Is that clear?"

Lisa stands, her hands clasped together in a gesture of respect. "Yes, Adam-senpai! I’ll protect Akiara no matter what. I promise."

Akiara blushes slightly but nods, her voice steady. "I promise to protect Lisa, too. I won’t let anything happen to her."

Adam observes them both for a moment, then nods. "The Union is still in its early stages. We’re working as fast as we can to find and protect power holders before the government does. But until then, prepare for the worst. Be ready to defend yourselves."

The gravity of Adam’s words settles heavily on both girls. Lisa’s cheerful demeanor fades slightly, replaced by a quiet determination. Akiara, despite her small stature, straightens her shoulders, a spark of resolve igniting in her dark eyes.

Adam turns to leave, his tall frame silhouetted against the park’s dim lights. He pauses, glancing back over his shoulder. "Remember, if anything feels off—if you sense any danger—you contact me immediately. No hesitation. Understood?"

Both girls nod firmly, their voices echoing in unison. "Yes, Adam-senpai!"

Satisfied, Adam strides away, disappearing into the night. Lisa watches him go, a warm sense of gratitude filling her heart. "He really cares about us, doesn’t he?"

Akiara smiles faintly, her earlier nervousness giving way to quiet admiration. "Yeah, he does. We’re lucky to have him looking out for us."

As they turn to leave the park, walking side by side, a sense of hope begins to take root. They may not know what the future holds, but for the first time in a long time, they feel like they’re not alone.
