Chapter 167: The President’s Address

Chapter: The President’s Address

Adam descended the stairs into the dining room, the faint glow of the television casting flickering shadows across the space.

The hum of news anchors speaking in urgent tones filled the air.

His father, Ricky, was seated on the couch, his posture tense, his eyes glued to the screen with an uncharacteristic seriousness. Nearby, Adam’s mother, Rachel, stood with her arms crossed, her face set in a grim expression.

The moment Rachel noticed Adam entering the room, her gaze shifted to him. "Adam, come here," she said, her voice firm yet tinged with urgency. "You need to see this."

Adam frowned slightly, curiosity and concern sparking in his chest. He crossed the room and turned toward the television, where the screen displayed a live broadcast.

His eyes widened as he recognized the speaker—it was the President of the country, standing behind a grand podium.

The nation’s flag draped the background, fluttering softly as if in solemn agreement with the weight of his words.

---

The President’s presence was commanding, his voice steady but heavy with emotion.

He stood tall, addressing not just a room but the entire country with an expression that mixed determination and sorrow.

Adam leaned forward slightly, drawn in by the intensity of the moment.

"My dear citizens," the President began, his gaze direct as if piercing through the lens to speak to every individual watching, "as you all are aware, our nation is under attack by an unknown force. Many cities have been placed under lockdown due to these threats."

Adam’s brows knitted together, unease washing over him. Unknown force? Is this related to the vampire? he wondered, his thoughts racing.

The President continued, his voice tinged with sadness. "We are being targeted by unidentified enemies, and our innocent citizens have borne the brunt of these attacks. It pains me deeply to see the loss of life and suffering caused by these events. To the families who have lost their loved ones, I offer my deepest condolences...Their sacrifices will not be in vain."

The weight of the President’s words, the anguish in his tone, was palpable. Even Sona and Tayo, perched lightly on his shoulders, seemed to sense the gravity of the situation, their small forms unusually still.

"But alongside this grief," the President continued, his voice growing firmer, "I make you this promise: we will not let their sacrifices go unanswered. As your leader, I vow to ensure justice for the innocent lives lost."

The President paused, taking a deep breath before leaning closer to the podium. His next words carried a sharp edge, a determination that left no room for doubt.

"For days now, I have been contemplating the steps we must take. Our existing measures have proven insufficient to neutralize these threats completely. It is clear that decisive action must be taken."

Adam felt the weight of those words, as though the President were addressing him personally. He could feel the tension in the room thickening, mirrored in the furrowed brows of his father and the pursed lips of his mother.

The President’s voice rose, infused with a steely resolve. "It is time to show these enemies—whoever they may be—what it means to face a united nation. To show them the strength of a people who stand together, hand in hand."

Adam’s pulse quickened as the President continued. "With that in mind, I am proud to announce that our government has passed a new Law. To all Power Holders who are hiding among our citizens: surrender, or face elimination."

The room fell silent as the President’s words hung in the air, their finality echoing in Adam’s mind. His mother inhaled sharply, her expression tightening. His father leaned forward, his knuckles white against the armrest of the couch.

The President waited a few seconds, letting his declaration sink in before continuing. "Our scientists have been conducting extensive research on these individuals—those we call vampires or Power Holders. After thorough testing, we have discovered that these individuals emit a unique type of energy. Detecting this energy was once a challenge, but thanks to the tireless efforts of our brilliant scientists, we now have the tools to identify them."

Adam’s jaw tightened. They’ve found a way to detect us, he realized, the implications dawning on him.

The President’s voice carried a grim satisfaction as he explained further. "We have developed devices capable of identifying Power Holders. With these tools, we can now conduct thorough investigations on every citizen."

Sona shifted uneasily on Adam’s shoulder, her wings fluttering nervously. Tayo’s gaze remained fixed on the screen, her heterochromatic eyes glinting with a mix of fear and defiance.

"To those who are revealed to be Power Holders," the President declared, his tone cold and unyielding, "you will be arrested and held accountable for the suffering you have caused. You will face justice for the pain inflicted upon innocent lives."

Adam’s heart pounded in his chest. The President’s words were a direct threat to people like him—people who were different.

The President’s gaze softened slightly, though his resolve remained. "I urge all citizens to cooperate fully with this investigation. This is a time of great crisis, and it is only through unity and perseverance that we can overcome this challenge. Stay strong. Stay vigilant. And above all, trust in your government to guide you through this dark hour."

With those final words, the President stepped back from the podium, signaling the end of his address. The broadcast cut to a panel of analysts, their voices overlapping as they began dissecting the speech.

Adam barely registered their chatter. His mind was racing, his thoughts a whirlwind of questions and concerns. Sona and Tayo exchanged a worried glance, their small frames trembling slightly under the weight of the moment.

His mother turned to him, her expression unreadable. "What do you think this means?" she asked, her voice quiet yet firm.

Adam didn’t respond immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the now-static television screen, his jaw set as he tried to process what he had just heard. This isn’t just a threat, he thought. It’s a declaration of war.

And with that, the Chapter ended, leaving Adam and his family on the precipice of an uncertain future.
