Chapter 127: The Expanding Path

The faint sound of their hurried footsteps echoed as Adam and his group, along with the 14-year-old girl, raced through the narrow, dimly lit passageway.

The air was thick with tension, their breaths uneven from the relentless pursuit.

Ahead, a towering wall came into view, its surface gleaming with advanced technology, devoid of the blue-glowing lines that had marked their earlier surroundings.

Adam slowed his pace, narrowing his eyes at the wall. Could this be the border of the city? he wondered.

The structure’s seamless surface and faint hum suggested it was more than just an ordinary barricade.

Suddenly, Adam’s heightened senses caught movement behind them.

A flurry of small, fast-moving objects was approaching rapidly.

His mind quickly assessed the situation—these weren’t drones controlled by artificial intelligence species. They must be unmanned aerial vehicles, he concluded grimly, his jaw tightening.

The 14-year-old girl, seemingly unbothered by the impending threat, darted toward the wall.

She crouched near its lower corner, her hands deftly removing a large, inconspicuous object embedded in the structure.

It looked like a trash receptacle at first glance. With practiced ease, she revealed a small opening hidden beneath it.

"Get in!" she called, her voice urgent but steady. Without waiting for a response, she curled herself into the tiny hole and disappeared into the darkness beyond.

Sona, using her wings to hover, glanced at the entrance and then back at Adam and Ani.

Her small frame allowed her to slip inside effortlessly. Ani, however, stood still, her gaze shifting between the opening and Adam.

Adam met her eyes and offered a reassuring smile. "Don’t worry. I’ve got this."

He stepped forward, his hand stretching out toward the small hole. With a focused flick of his fingers, the opening began to expand, the wall shifting and groaning as the entrance widened.

What was once a modest crawlspace grew into a passageway nearly five meters wide.

The sound of grinding stone echoed through the air, causing Sona and the 14-year-old girl to stumble back in shock. They stared at Adam, their eyes wide with a mix of fear and awe.

From the inside, the girl exclaimed, "What are you doing?!"

The newly expanded entrance was now large enough for all of them to pass through comfortably. Ani, still outside, blinked in amazement before stepping toward the widened path.

"Let’s move quickly," Adam urged, his voice calm but firm. Ani nodded and entered the tunnel, her movements cautious.

As Adam stepped inside, the girl glared at him, her voice rising in panic. "Do you realize what you’ve done? They’ll see this opening from a mile away! I made it small so we wouldn’t be caught!"

Adam met her fiery gaze with a calm smile. "Trust me," he said simply.

Turning back toward the entrance, he raised his hand once more. With a deliberate motion, he clenched his fist, and the wide gap began to seal itself. The wall reassembled seamlessly, the surface returning to its original, unblemished state.

The girl stared in disbelief. From the outside, it was as if the hole had never existed.

"See?" Adam said, glancing at her. "Nothing to worry about."

She opened her mouth to argue but stopped, her shoulders slumping in reluctant acceptance.

Suddenly, the tunnel plunged into darkness. The faint light that had guided their path vanished entirely.

Sona’s voice broke the silence. "Lord Adam, I think you’ll have to do something about this."

Adam chuckled softly. "Patience," he replied. Kneeling, he pressed his palm against the cold ground.

A faint glow began to emanate from the ceiling above them. One by one, small orbs of light emerged, illuminating the tunnel.

They stretched out in a neat row, their soft radiance revealing the path ahead. The once-dark passageway was now bathed in warm, golden light.

The group gazed at the transformation in awe. The 14-year-old girl’s jaw dropped as she looked around, her eyes tracing the glowing trail that stretched into the distance.

"What... are you?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and admiration.

The girl’s question hung in the air, unanswered, as the glow of the lamps reflected in Adam’s calm yet mysterious eyes.

Adam’s lips curved into a faint smile as the 14-year-old girl stared at him with curiosity. Her earlier question lingered in the air.

"You can call me Adam," he said softly, his calm voice carrying an air of confidence.

The girl tilted her head, her brows furrowed in confusion. "Adam? That’s such a strange name. I’ve never heard anything like it before."

Before Adam could respond, Sona interjected, her tone sharp and urgent. "We should keep moving. We’re not out of danger yet."

The girl slapped her forehead, a look of realization dawning on her face. "Oh, right! I almost forgot!" she exclaimed, turning toward the dimly lit passage ahead. She took a step forward but stopped as Adam’s hand gently rested on her shoulder.

"Wait," Adam said firmly, his tone calm yet commanding. "There’s no need to rush. Stay where you are."

The girl blinked at him, visibly confused by his words. Her lips parted as if to question him, but before she could, Sona flew up and perched on Adam’s shoulder, her tiny wings fluttering.

Understanding Adam’s intentions, Sona remained silent as Adam extended his hand forward.

With a subtle motion, he gestured toward the ground beneath them. "Let’s go," he said.

The ground beneath their feet began to tremble, a soft hum filling the air. Slowly, a large tile rose from the earth, its smooth surface shimmering faintly.

The group found themselves lifted into the air as the tile hovered steadily, suspended as if by invisible forces.

The 14-year-old girl gasped, her hands instinctively clutching Adam’s arm for support. She stared at the hovering platform, her wide eyes filled with a mix of awe and trepidation.

"This is just the beginning," Adam said with a smirk, his voice steady.

Without warning, the platform surged forward, gliding through the cavern at an impressive speed.

The girl yelped, tightening her grip on Adam as the wind whipped past her. Ani, standing close by, felt the force of the acceleration and instinctively grabbed Adam’s other hand for balance.

The platform moved smoothly, carrying them deeper into the cave. The walls around them seemed to blur as the tile increased its speed, the sound of rushing air filling their ears.

After a few moments, the platform began to slow, and the group found themselves in a vast chamber with two distinct paths branching out ahead. The platform came to a gentle halt as Adam surveyed the surroundings.

The girl pointed to the path on the right. "We need to go that way," she said with certainty.

Adam nodded and guided the platform down the indicated path. It glided forward effortlessly, the faint glow from the lamps Adam had created earlier illuminating their way. The passage grew narrower, and soon, a large gate came into view.

Unlike the high-tech structures they had encountered before, this gate was simple and unadorned, constructed from concrete. Its weathered surface hinted at its age, standing in stark contrast to the advanced technologies they had seen earlier.

Adam brought the platform to a stop in front of the gate. As the group disembarked, the platform descended, seamlessly merging back into the ground as if it had never existed.

The 14-year-old girl approached the gate, running her fingers along its rough surface. She pushed against it with a grunt, her small frame barely making the massive structure budge. After a moment, a smaller gate, no more than four meters tall, swung open beneath the larger one with a creak.

The girl turned back to Adam and his group. "Come on. Let’s go inside," she said, stepping through the opening without hesitation.

Adam and the others followed, stepping into a large hall on the other side.

The sight before them was both unexpected and surreal. Dozens of children, all appearing to be around the same age as the girl, filled the space. They sat in clusters, engrossed in various tasks. The hum of their quiet chatter and the occasional clinking of tools echoed through the cavernous room.

As the children noticed the girl’s return, their faces lit up with smiles. They waved and called out to her, their voices filled with relief and joy. However, their expressions shifted the moment they noticed Adam and his group.

The children froze, their eyes wide as they stared at the unfamiliar adults who had entered their sanctuary. Their hesitation was palpable, the hall falling silent as curiosity and apprehension filled the air.

One of the children, a boy with unruly hair, stepped forward. He looked at Adam and his group, then turned to the girl, his lips curling into a tentative smile. "Don’t worry," he said to the others. "They’re not enemies. It’s been years since we’ve seen any adults, but they mean no harm."

His words seemed to ease the tension. The children slowly resumed their activities, though many of them continued to steal curious glances at Adam and his companions.

Adam stood silently, his gaze sweeping across the hall. He could feel the weight of their stares, the unspoken questions lingering in the air.

And so, the group found themselves surrounded by the unexpected—a hidden community of children, their existence shrouded in mystery.

As the children whispered among themselves, their curiosity growing, the scene marked the end of another step in Adam’s journey.
