I Am Extraordinary Alone
Chapter 73 - 72: A Blaze That Ignites the Fields

Chapter 73: Chapter 72: A Blaze That Ignites the Fields

In the afternoon, the torrential rain gradually ceased.

Guo Kaichen folded his umbrella and slid it into the side pocket of his backpack.

The highway that stretched across the wasteland had been built decades ago with assistance from Yin Country to Chicken Snake Country. However, after the new government took office, the relationship between the two countries quickly froze, and such assistance was terminated.

He had been walking for the better part of the day and, from time to time, could see the discarded belongings of the wretched citizens on the road, mostly useless summer clothing and empty food packaging.

He had set out from Kongse City in the early morning, heading on foot toward the Heavenly Fallen Objects Shelter in the outskirts, an area he had explored with drones a few weeks earlier.

He had encountered refugees fleeing to Kongse twice along the way. The groups were not large, seven or eight, perhaps a dozen or so. These people might have come from the direction of Uliang.

While walking, Guo Kaichen saw a large group of refugees at the end of the road ahead. These people, like him, were heading in the opposite direction of Kongse.

The things on the road had all been discarded by them.

He hurried forward, rushing into the crowd, attempting to communicate with the leader of these people.

This group of refugees numbered around forty or fifty, mostly men and women over forty.

"You’re heading to Kongse, right?" Guo Kaichen asked.

The man leading the group, who looked to be in his fifties with a face full of indignation but eyes full of exhaustion, shook his head and said, "We are going to Linjiang."

"Linjiang? That’s a war zone," Guo Kaichen said.

"We know that... but the New Liberation Front is there, and we want to join them," the man replied.

Guo Kaichen looked at the other refugees; they all had determined expressions, seemingly with their minds made up. Knowing he could not persuade this group, he did not say more.

Just as he was about to say goodbye, suddenly, four military vehicles approached from behind.

"Is it... the conservatives or the radicals?"

The atmosphere became heavy as they could tell that those four military vehicles were not just passing by but were coming for them.

"Don’t panic... don’t make any rash moves, don’t run. If they stop, we have a chance," Guo Kaichen said.

He had seen the way soldiers captured refugees; anyone daring to run would be met with a spray of bullets from their rifles.

As he said, the four military trucks slowed down in front of them, two veered off the shoulder of the road to bypass the crowd, blocking them from the front, while the other two blocked from behind.

The trucks were clearly divided in their tasks, two with empty cargo beds and two loaded with government troops.

Guo Kaichen glanced at them, estimating that there were no more than thirty soldiers.

They jumped down from the cargo beds, a tall, slender soldier holding a megaphone, leaning on the edge of the truck roof, yelling at the crowd of refugees, "Get on the trucks! Quietly! At your destination, there will be food, clothes, and even guns to be given out!"

"We don’t need help!" the middle-aged man leading the group shouted in response.

The tall, slender soldier glared, using the megaphone and gesturing toward the man, yelling at the dismounted troops, "Drag that motherfucker out!"

A few soldiers tried to break through the crowd to apprehend the man but encountered resistance from the surrounding refugees. Immediately, the soldiers began smashing their rifle butts into the faces of the refugees, cursing foully as they did so.

"The nation is in peril! And you all won’t fight! Hiding here and there! Freeloading!" the tall man stood on the vehicle, overseeing the violence, and yelled abusively.

"Let’s fight them!!" shouted someone from within the refugees, and suddenly, everyone was filled with a surge of courage.

At that moment, a convoy approached from behind, and when everyone turned to look, they saw six trucks loaded with official troops and a dark green light tank.

The refugees’ newly kindled courage dissipated just like that.

"Who just said they wanted to fight? Who!" the lean, tall solider said with a laugh.

He carelessly pointed his finger, and his subordinates dragged three men and two women out from the crowd, knocking them to the ground with the butts of their guns.

The five people lay on the ground, covering their heads, while more than a dozen soldiers surrounded them and trampled them. The troops stamped down hard on their faces and abdomens with their heels. Soon, these five were stomped bloody and vomiting ceaselessly.

The soldiers behind also got off their trucks, beating the refugees and shouting loudly at them to hurry onto the vehicles. One soldier disengaged his safety and charged into the crowd, pressing his gun against a woman’s back.

Just as he was about to shoot, Guo Kaichen suddenly grabbed the barrel and struck the soldier’s face with his hand. Then, grabbing his shoulder and kicking out his leg, he disarmed the solider with a set of CQC and threw him to the ground.

The soldier lay on his back, the back of his head hitting the ground with a dull thud. His mouth opened naturally, and then the gun barrel was stuffed into his mouth, as his chest was forcefully pinned down.

The soldiers all pointed their guns at Guo Kaichen in unison.

"I am from the Yin Country Superpower Special Forces! Your actions against civilians have violated the War Acts Agreement! Take one more step and see what happens!" Guo Kaichen yelled.

Saying so, he looked around, making sure the dismounted soldiers understood.

"Ha ha ha ha! You’re from the Superpower Special Forces? What a coincidence, me too~ How about you show me your skills?" the lean, tall soldier sneered.

Guo Kaichen also started to smile.

These people must have heard of the Superpower Special Department on regular days, but they’ve never seen them in their lives, and being used to bullying people in their own country, they naturally wouldn’t believe him.

No matter.

"Fine! I’ve been looking forward to you saying that! Everyone is going to die here today!!!" Guo Kaichen said with a laugh.

Purple light burst forth from his eyes, and suddenly the air around became scorchingly hot.

The next second, the tall, lean soldier ignited like a lit candle, completely engulfed by the sudden blaze.

He screamed in agony as he tumbled off the truck, melting as he hit the ground. His arm detached from his body, and upon stumbling to his feet, he collapsed to the ground like a withered black flower, completely limp.

The scent of roasted meat spread through the air, and the surrounding soldiers were engulfed by flames that mysteriously arose, their screams echoing as they barely made it a few steps before being incinerated.

The refugees instinctively huddled together, avoiding the devouring flames, and some soldiers who were ablaze shot at Guo Kaichen before dying, but the bullets in their guns ignited from the high temperature and exploded the barrels.

"Get out of here! Quick!" Guo Kaichen shouted to the refugees.

His superpower was called "Blaze," capable of creating high temperature and flames in an environment with air. The flames he created would quickly disappear without something to burn, but human bodies are the best kind of fuel, as fat and muscle are highly flammable.

This ability was very prone to collateral damage since he could only control where the fire appeared, not the ferocity of the blaze after ignition or the high temperatures generated from it.

Some of the refugees got burned by the flames, and their sleeves caught fire. Hearing Guo Kaichen’s call, they quickly ran towards the side of the road, helping each other extinguish the flames as they went.

The high-temperature flames created by Guo Kaichen burned the dismounted soldiers, and at the same time, the fuel tanks of the trucks were ignited as well. The vehicles were enveloped in towering flames, threatening to explode at any moment.

The tank, however, made a quick escape. They even forwent shelling the refugees because the tank crew in the cockpit had no idea what was happening outside. They thought they were under attack by the New Liberation Front, and since they couldn’t spot the enemy, they chose to distance themselves from the attacked location as a priority.

However, Guo Kaichen lit a fire at the tank’s gun position, and the drivers quickly caught ablaze. The tank moved just a few dozen meters before gradually coming to a halt and then was motionless.

As he ran to meet up with the refugees, the trucks finally exploded behind him. However, the explosions were not as intense as those in the Sethiyan Federation movies, more like a few muffled farts, although the flames leapt high and thick black smoke blocked out the light, casting the area into considerable darkness.

"You’d better head to Kongse City and settle down for now, next time you might not be lucky enough to run into me." Guo Kaichen said to the group.

After speaking, he looked back at the wreckage strewn across the ground, tightened the straps of his backpack, and headed once more in the direction of the Heavenly Fallen Objects Shelter.
