Chapter 545: Chapter 543: Old Friends from the Battlefield
July 2, 2124, 5:30 PM.
Heisai State, Gambia.
The equatorial sunlight was like a flame ray, the hot wind outside the window mixed with yellow sand pouring into the vehicle through the window, the black guide was driving the jeep at high speed, Wang Ye closed the car window, and then looked towards the female researcher sitting beside him.
Her name was Lin Yan, from an organization called the Human Cradle Plan Foundation, which according to her description, aims to record and control those extraterrestrial beings that have fallen, and to supervise some pharmaceutical companies to ensure they are not misused.
Since the neutralizing formula and the Black Medicine formula had started circulating in the black market, related institutions sprouted up like mushrooms after the rain, they did not possess the right to investigate privately, at best they could be considered civic behavior, but who knows what tycoons are hidden behind such institutions? After all, for the United Council to agree to cooperate with such a civic organization, in Wang Ye’s view, was a very rare occurrence.
"The mission this time is to escort Ms. Lin Yan to Gambia, where a new Heavenly Falling Object has been discovered, your primary responsibility is to ensure her safety."
Through the earpiece played the mission briefing recording, as the vehicle passed through the uninhabited wilderness, wild animals were leisurely wandering across it.
They disembarked at Ban Zhu’er and then drove inland, heading for Niaymina.
The journey was not smooth; Heisai State’s various sheikhdoms were waging civil wars for some reasons, the root of it all was that Etolia, under Wei Tianyang’s protection, was encroaching on other sheikhdoms’ interests, industries, ports, and Heavenly Falling Objects that had landed within their borders, had all been plundered. No small country dared to provoke Etolia, so for survival, they could only turn their guns towards other weaker countries.
It was only near evening that the guide drove the vehicle into a border village near Niaymina, where the Gambian military had set up checkpoints; many refugees from the city were gathered here, and both sides of the dirt road were full of refugees’ cars.
When Wang Ye and Lin Yan got out of the car, a few soldiers asked to search them; he did not bring any weapons, so he did not care, but seeing the black men touching Lin Yan, he wanted to stop them.
"They are with me."
At this point, a person emerged from behind the red iron gate, and upon his speaking, those black soldiers had nothing more to say, and they allowed Wang Ye and his party to pass.
Lin Yan breathed a sigh of relief, she was dressed in denim shorts and a red vest, only layered with a light yellow thin shirt, her brown double-shoulder bag was filled with a tablet.
She was not good at dealing with these affairs and also had no good feelings towards the military people, even for someone like Wang Ye, she also had an inexplicable aversion.
"Follow me."
Wang Ye saw that the man was dressed in low-threat clothing like himself, which was suitable for mounting various types of ammunition, weapons, and all tools for killing; it seemed he was a companion who had arrived earlier.
The three came into an iron-sheet house, the air was dry and hot, this room was originally a butcher’s shop in town, now closed for good, with remnants of animal blood still on the floor.
The man turned around, took a look at Wang Ye, and smiled, saying, "What a coincidence, we must have met before, right? My name is Leng Kai, dispatched by the United Council’s special task force."
Wang Ye was startled, also feeling that this middle-aged man seemed familiar, he said, "I’m Wang Ye... were you part of the mission in Yinan a few years ago?"
Upon hearing this, Leng Kai patted Wang Ye and said, "That’s right! The soldier that night was you!"
With that, Wang Ye also remembered; that day in Yinan, they watched as Wei Tianyang took away a large group of children, he wanted to shoot, but was pinned to the ground by gravity, in the end, a special forces unit pulled him up, that person should have been Leng Kai.
"Really is quite a coincidence!" Wang Ye smiled.
"Did you get the Meme Barrier Agent?" Leng Kai suddenly asked.
"I did, now we can’t say that name anymore..." Wang Ye said.
Leng Kai nodded.
In theory, Wei Tianyang was still a person of the United Council, but in reality, he was already standing opposite of everyone.
"It’s difficult to predict worldly affairs," Leng Kai said.
"He’s not even close to being a hero," Wang Ye said.
"He doesn’t intend to be a hero, no, he’s not even up to being a soldier!" Leng Kai added.
Seeing the two soldiers before her start to divert onto other topics, Lin Yan grew impatient, urging, "Stop chitchatting, focus on the mission."
Leng Kai gave an embarrassed smile, then led the two through the iron-sheet house to the red off-road vehicle parked by the road. Leng Kai climbed into the driver’s seat and then started the engine.
Lin Yan pulled out her tablet and began tracking the movements of the Heavenly Falling Object, meanwhile asking, "You know what we’re looking for, right?"
"Otherwise, why would we be here?" Leng Kai turned back from the driver’s seat to look at her.
Wang Ye looked out the window, silent.
"What we’re looking for is a Heavenly Falling Object, I thought the United Council would at least send a fully armed squad to support, but why did they just send the two of you..." Lin Yan said.
"If that thing’s dead, it’s best, if it’s alive, whoever you send won’t be useful, unless you find him, but rather than finding him, you might as well commit suicide," Leng Kai said.
"Any weapons?" Wang Ye asked.
"There’s an arms dealer in the city who can provide weapons, provided they’re not dead yet," Leng Kai said.
He reached over to the passenger seat to pick up a small bag and tossed it into Wang Ye’s arms.
"Inside, there’s military rations and water. Let the young lady make do with it," said Leng Kai.
After speaking, he started the engine; the car, like a stubborn bull, jolted forward and drove into the night.
Regarding the Heavenly Falling Object they were searching for, Wang Ye and Leng Kai knew very little. The Foundation had kept tight-lipped, and the United Council hadn’t asked many questions. Two years had passed, and the world had changed a lot; Wei Tianyang’s threat loomed over everyone.
No one knew what he wanted to do, but everyone was aware that he was on the brink of madness.
Information was leaked that speaking his name would lead him to you, and members of the United Council had taken Meme Barrier Agents to prevent themselves from uttering Wei Tianyang’s name.
When the car entered Niaymina, it was already dark. Parked alongside the road were two blasted tanks. They got out of the car in a deserted area of the city, and Leng Kai led them to an arms dealer first.
Niaymina was a small city, curiously located at the narrow waist of Gambia’s land. The slightly degenerated government forces were desperately trying to capture it.
Wang Ye and Lin Yan followed Leng Kai to a deserted dusty gray four-story building complex. They climbed the concrete steps.
Leng Kai pulled out a claw knife and pressed against the wall, slowly feeling his way up. He glanced at Wang Ye, who immediately turned around, his hand resting on Lin Yan’s shoulder.
It seemed something had gone wrong.
On the fourth floor stairway, a stream of black viscous liquid slowly trickled down. Leng Kai nudged it with his foot, feeling like it was tar, not blood.
Leng Kai went up alone; the door was ajar. He slowly pulled it open to look inside.
Wang Ye heard Leng Kai inside saying, "Come in," so he pulled Lin Yan into the room and shut the door behind them.
On the floor lay six dismembered black bodies, with several ICR rifles slumped over them.
"They’re all dead," Leng Kai stated, picking up the rifles and checking the magazines.
The arms dealer had died in the farthest corner of the room, clenching a suitcase. Wang Ye approached to inspect the body, and took out a folding short sword submachine gun from the case, registering the pheromone.
"This strength... it wasn’t killed by a human," said Wang Ye.
At that moment, Lin Yan’s vomiting could be heard from behind.
Lin Yan, leaning against the wall, shook uncontrollably with fear; the sight of the bodies in the room was too gruesome for her.
Realizing Lin Yan wasn’t Wang Mingxue, Leng Kai took out a water bottle and handed it to her.
"No gunshot wounds, troublesome," sighed Leng Kai.
Gun in hand, feeling less anxious, Wang Ye and Leng Kai did a sweep of their surroundings before leading Lin Yan downstairs.
Lin Yan hadn’t yet recovered, wiping her mouth with a tissue when she took out her satellite phone, only to be stopped by Wang Ye.
"Using a satellite phone here could reveal our location," Wang Ye said.
"Otherwise, I don’t know the exact location," Lin Yan said.
Leng Kai didn’t seem to care, saying, "This crappy country probably doesn’t have any signal interception equipment, and he doesn’t rely on telecom signals to search for locations."
Lin Yan dialed a number, making direct contact with the high-level executives of the Foundation, and soon got through.
"It’s me, yes, I’m nearby," she said, turning her back to Leng Kai and Wang Ye as she spoke.
"Still relatively safe for now, I need the exact coordinates, please send them to my map."
"Alright, I’m on it..."
The call was ongoing, but a terrifying roar echoed through the night sky.
"What’s that sound?" Wang Ye raised his gun, looking around.
"Don’t know. We need to hurry and evacuate," said Leng Kai.
Lin Yan stowed away the satellite phone and followed behind Wang Ye, not even daring to breathe.
"Do you know the location now?" Wang Ye asked.
Lin Yan put on her glasses, started up the navigation app on her tablet, then tucked the tablet back into her backpack. The map was displayed on her AR glasses’ HUD.
"This way," Lin Yan directed.
The three of them moved quietly, evacuating from the building complex.
