Chapter 514: Chapter 512 Progress
"Professor?""Professor Li?"
Li Xianping heard someone calling him through the fog of sleep.
Rubbing his eyes groggily, he put on his glasses and vaguely saw Lin Yan’s face swaying in front of him.
"Professor!" Lin Yan pushed his arm again.
Li Xianping finally woke up. Recently, he and Lin Yan’s team had been trying to unlock the secrets harbored by Fujiwara Makoto, often working late into the night. He had surely fallen asleep at the desk due to the extreme exhaustion.
The Human Cradle Plan Foundation had provided nearly unlimited funds, but their patience was clearly not infinite.
"What time is it now?" asked Li Xianping.
"Just past three in the morning," Lin Yan replied as she pushed a cup of coffee towards him, continuing, "I’ve found something, it might be the breakthrough in our research."
Li Xianping immediately perked up, took a sip of coffee, and followed Lin Yan to the experimental instruments.
In the pale blue glass window, on a palm-sized glass platform, lay a small piece of red tissue.
Li Xianping knew what it was.
It was Fujiwara Makoto’s uterus.
"The organ is still alive, no different from when it was in her body," Lin Yan said.
"We’ve known this for a while, that her organs can maintain vitality outside the body, but they must be reinserted after a while, otherwise they’ll completely fail. One of her kidneys died that way," Li Xianping said.
"That’s not the point. We’ve always stopped there before. I’ve implanted some sperm mixed with Black Medicine into this external uterus," Lin Yan said with a smile.
Li Xianping was startled.
"That’s not scientific. Experiments mixing Black Medicine and sperm were done by the academic community a long time ago. You know the results, Black Medicine destroys the structure of the sperm," he said.
"But her uterus is different. A few days ago, I implanted Black Medicine and sperm into this uterus, and by yesterday noon, they had already mixed. The sperm absorbed the Black Medicine and retained its vitality. I believe it won’t be long before it forms an embryo," Lin Yan said.
Li Xianping stroked his chin and looked up at the various data on the screen. The state of the uterus was still relatively healthy, but he didn’t know if this organ, separated from Fujiwara Makoto, could survive until the embryo was fully developed.
Normally, after human conception, it takes at least 5-8 months for the embryo to form, develop into a fetus, and finally result in childbirth. But the last removed kidney only survived two months outside the body.
What shocked him more was his student’s method of experimentation.
From the moment Lin Yan became his student, Li Xianping had noticed that this girl was unlike the others.
It wasn’t that she was exceptionally talented or gifted.
Her greatest advantage... or rather, her uniqueness, lay in her perspective on experimental subjects.
She didn’t judge from basic principles and scientific logic but treated these experimental bodies as "toys."
Her wildly imaginative, childlike assembly of parts, trying again after failure, often yielded more results than those obtained by drafting complex formulas on paper and endlessly debating and arguing.
Based on experiential dogmatic thinking, filled with "this won’t work" and "that’s not right," Lin Yan would not mind these aspects; though sometimes her actions appeared extremely cruel, the truth often emerged precisely through these trials.
Why is the world like this? No one could offer a reasonable explanation. Lin Yan never concerned herself with "why it is like this," she only wanted to know "what it will become."
The results outweighed everything.
Now, the body of the Japanese girl sealed in the jar, her organs, her skin and hair, her bodily fluids, and even... the gases she exhaled could all potentially hold the key to unlocking the secrets of Black Medicine.
The only regret was that Wei Tianyang, the world’s sole superpower user with multiple abilities, refused to provide any of his bodily tissues for her research.
Li Xianping gradually felt himself aging, but Lin Yan gave him motivation; the path to the true knowledge was endless, and seekers did not concern themselves with age.
"If a new life were born, would you name it?" Lin Yan asked half-jokingly.
"Give it a number first, and if this experiment truly yields a baby-like entity... then giving it a name... we might well develop affections for it," Li Xianping said.
"Verify the results, then destroy them, rest assured Professor Li, I am not the ’Holy Mother’ type from the movies," Lin Yan said with a laugh.
That smile seemed truly chilling.
Meanwhile, in distant Heisai State, at 10 am, Wei Tianyang had just finished breakfast, and Baphomet was still nibbling rye bread on the windowsill.
Watching it grow larger, Wei Tianyang grew more expectant of the changes that might affect the groups of impoverished and homeless.
Quigui Ge, his loyal and reticent enforcer, delivered a daily observation report; the impoverished individuals who ate the relief food showed no abnormalities yet, the only unusual fact was their significantly reduced frequency of excretion.
People in the slums suspected something wrong with the food, as eating a lot but not defecating surely meant it was remaining undigested in the body.
Some feared that eating such food for several days might ultimately lead to intestinal blockage and death, but when the time came to distribute food, they still eagerly came to collect.
After all, people need to eat, when hungry they couldn’t care less, and besides, the sugar-free sodas tasted quite good, and they got free chewing gum and toothpaste too, why not take it?
"Some are spreading rumors, saying that the organization distributing the food is backed by the government with the aim of eliminating the poor. Should we take care of those spreading rumors?" Quigui Ge asked.
"No, no, no... they don’t know it’s us behind this, nor do they realize how valuable the food sent out is, making judgments based on phenomena contrary to common sense and generating rumors are only natural; that’s how the world operates," Wei Tianyang said.
Quigui Ge nodded in agreement.
"Keep distributing the food, perhaps we can include slightly more expensive sodas. Add some daily necessities as well, like towels, toilet paper, antibiotic tablets... things like that," Wei Tianyang said.
Quigui Ge nodded, then quickly left the room.
Wei Tianyang tidied up the tabletop and opened his laptop to check several emails.
Presidents of several small countries in the East Continent hoped for an audience, and likewise, the local warlords, who conveyed their carefully worded requests through Rada Gan, had their emails forwarded to Wei Tianyang.
Starting with the East Continent... then the Western Alliance... Heisai State was already being consolidated under the control of Etolia’s President. Soon, most of the world’s governments would become his shadow.
At that moment, he noticed his mother standing outside the window watching him.
"Mom? Is there something you need?" Wei Tianyang turned to ask through the window.
His mother, seemingly not expecting him to notice, smiled awkwardly and floated into the room.
"Nothing... I was just... just looking at you," his mother said.
