I Am Extraordinary Alone
Chapter 435 - 433: Wraith

Chapter 435: Chapter 433: Wraith

By the time he reached Konse Suburb, it was already late in the evening.

After getting out of the car, Starbucks said, "Are you sure you don’t want a reward?"

"You’re not my type," Chen Ke replied.

"That’s quite hurtful, but thank you anyway," Starbucks said.

Yaha, with hands on hips, spoke, "If I get a chance in the future, I’ll find a suitable gift for you."

"There’s no need, we won’t be seeing each other again," Chen Ke said with a smile.

He glanced at the fuel gauge then started the car, leaving the twinkling lights of Konse behind in the distance.

After a long and lonely journey, at 3 a.m, he finally arrived in the northern woods of Chicken Snake Country.

These primeval forests located in the valley required one to turn off the national road and onto a muddy path to enter.

Within the woods, there was a cleared mud track wide enough for a truck to pass. Illuminated by the headlights, some faint tire tracks were discernible on the ground.

At first, he presumed they were made by military vehicles, but further on, he vaguely spotted a logging site within the forest, which made sense.

Chen Ke pulled out a military map and, using the light from the cab, studied it. The forest wasn’t a defense zone for the army, for this place was a C-shaped valley. Once inside, there was only one entrance and exit, trapping anyone who ventured in—it was a dead end.

He put away the map and parked the truck by the side of the mud track, as ahead was an open logging field, marking the road’s end.

Chen Ke got out of the truck; after a day’s long journey, the truck was nearly out of fuel. Now, he could abandon it.

The ground beneath his feet was muddy and damp. He didn’t want to dirty his suit and leather shoes, and the Black Knight’s armor was too cumbersome. Fortunately, Chen Ke didn’t lack for equipment; he brought out a small diamond.

The properties of the equipment appeared before him.

[Florence was not only a noble knight personally anointed by the queen but also the first hunter of the secret-keepers. After being corrupted by Divine Blood, the once active hunter under the cover of night became a monster hiding underground.]

This suit, acquired from the Industrial Revolution-era Langdon, had a fatal characteristic of doubling the damage received, but it also provided 1.5 times the firepower for firearms, meaning a pistol could deal the damage of a rifle.

And it’s immune to sanity attacks... Well, that attribute didn’t mean much in this world.

Chen Ke’s suit was replaced with a dark brown combat trench coat, and he donned a tricorn hat. A red scarf wrapped around the lower half of his face, and his feet were in long boots stepping into the mud. The material was waterproof, which was reassuring.

Obviously, this attire was too warm for the weather, but luckily, his bodily nature was akin to a dead man’s—he wouldn’t sweat—so he could endure it.

He pulled out a Remington REC7 automatic rifle and flipped a small kerosene lamp into his right hand. This lamp, brought from Fan Hede, had no other use; Chen Ke merely used it as a flashlight.

The blue ghostly light illuminated the dark forest, and with the rifle on his back, Chen Ke explored in the direction Ruan Yu had indicated.

His blue eyes could penetrate the cover of the forest’s trees to spot the outlines of all living creatures, but he still had to use the oil lamp to watch his step. The documents had said that where the Heavenly Falling Objects struck, disease and mutations could occur. But so far, there was nothing unusual around him.

However, this naive thought only lasted for less than five minutes.

The first strange thing was sensed by his feet.

He stepped on something soft, a sensation as if he had stepped on a hand laid flat on the ground, with fingers that curled inward from the pressure, gripping the sides of his shoe.

Chen Ke got a start and looked down, only to see the ground was covered with hand-shaped mushrooms that bore spotted patterns.

These mushrooms were shaped like human hands but were much larger, almost three times the size of a human hand.

Under the glow of the blue oil lamp, the sight of these hand-shaped mushrooms standing out from the ground was hair-raising, as if countless people were buried underneath, their hands breaking through the earth, struggling for life.

But for Chen Ke, this was nothing; he had seen stranger things.

Chen Ke carefully chose where to step and continued towards his target location. He noticed that some mushrooms on the ground had bite marks.

He became more vigilant. If there were bite marks, it meant there were beasts present. If mushrooms could grow into the shape of human hands, who knew what form these beasts could take?

As Chen Ke pondered this, a chewing sound reached his ears.

Damn it... speak of the devil?

He looked towards the source of the sound and saw the silhouette of a deer behind a tree more than twenty paces away.

Chen Ke raised his rifle, hung the oil lamp on the barrel, and slowly approached the creature.

The blue light revealed the deer’s hindquarters, which were very white, or perhaps not white but an illusion caused by the blue light.

But the odd part was that, to the naked eye, the back half of this creature looked more like a person squatting there, hunched forward.

Chen Ke circled around to get behind the deer and saw it abruptly raise its head—however, it did not turn to face him. It kept its back to Chen Ke. The four thick antlers on its head were shaped like human arms, all four hands posed differently.

Chen Ke didn’t hesitate to open fire first.

The theological bullets sprayed out, but with a flash of white light, the deer vanished into thin air! The bullet hit a tree trunk, blasting a large chunk from it, and the tree, unable to withstand the damage, cracked several times as it fell towards Chen Ke.

He quickly moved position, dodging the falling trunk. The sudden gunshots and the sound of the tree collapsing carried far in the dark jungle.

Chen Ke quickly scanned his surroundings for traces of the deer. He saw it flickering in and out of sight, and it did not seem to be fleeing for its life but rather seemed to be circling around, getting closer for an attack.

Chen Ke stood his ground, shooting constantly at the deer. With each shot, it teleported away, and Chen Ke’s bullets cut through rows of trees. He realized he could not keep shooting this way. The deer was leading him to destroy the trees, and the falling trunks were blocking his escape routes.

Realizing this, Chen Ke holstered his gun and switched to the Black Knight’s armor. Since the deer wanted to lead him on, he decided to play along.

He walked with heavy steps, taking a round shield in his left hand and the Fire-igniting Broadsword in his right, and walked towards the deer.

Seeing that Chen Ke had stopped firing, the deer spat out the mushroom it had in its mouth, lowered its head, and aimed its antlers at Chen Ke.

"Come on, let’s chop off your head!" Chen Ke said.

At that moment, the deer did something astonishing! Its head split towards both sides of its body, and a small, bloody human face appeared in the middle, the arms on top of those antlers beginning to move as if they truly were its arms.

If it had only been that, it wouldn’t have been a big deal, Chen Ke thought. At that moment, however, a blue Ghost Knight appeared on the deer, raising its rifle and taking aim at Chen Ke.
