Chapter 387: Chapter 385: Strange Shape
Ronnie and Margaret followed Jennifer into her apartment.
Ronnie noticed several pairs of men’s leather shoes neatly placed on the shoe cabinet by the porch.
The lights were off inside the house and the room on the left was tightly closed—Ronnie guessed it was the children’s room.
Jennifer led them through the rather small hall to the back of the house, where two windows were covered by thick curtains. Jennifer went over and carefully pulled back the curtains just a crack.
She looked back at them and said, "Don’t make too much noise, don’t let any light out, just peek through the gap in the curtains."
Ronnie nodded and moved up to the crack in the curtain to look outside.
The back of Jennifer’s room faced the rear of Building A, with the front of Building B to the left. From here, one could easily see the windows of several homes in Building A.
Ronnie saw the rooms on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th floors. Some of these rooms had their curtains open, and, in the dark, shadowy figures could be discerned. Upon closer inspection, it became apparent that large groups of people were kneeling and sitting, filling up the rooms.
"Are these people residents of the building?" Ronnie asked.
Jennifer shook her head, gesturing for them to keep watching.
Ronnie looked again toward the opposite side.
"They are very quiet, have you contacted them?" Margaret asked.
"No, they used to make strange noises, intermittently, but now they’ve suddenly quieted down," Jennifer said.
"Have they shown any extreme behavior?" asked Margaret.
Jennifer shook her head and said, "They just kneel there; I don’t know what they are doing."
"How long has this been going on?" Margaret asked.
"It started a few days ago," Jennifer answered.
Margaret woke her tablet and pulled out a pen to take notes.
Suddenly, Jennifer covered the screen of the computer and whispered, "Don’t make any light!"
"What’s wrong? Why do this?" Margaret asked, puzzled.
At that moment, Ronnie signaled for them to be quiet.
He saw several men in the neighboring window stand up.
These individuals were hunched over, their heads tilted to one side, their bodies twitching unnaturally.
"On drugs?" Ronnie muttered to himself.
In the next second, several people who had been sitting rushed toward the standing men. They screamed and dragged the twitching people to the ground while unsettling noises of commotion came from the building.
"Damn... what the hell are they doing?!" Ronnie unconsciously put his hand on his gun holster.
Margaret also moved closer to the window to see. Unable to believe what was happening before her eyes, she quickly headed toward the door.
Ronnie quickly followed her, but Jennifer grabbed Ronnie and said, "What are you going to do?"
"There’s a riot happening across the street, we need to call for backup and go stop the violence. Miss, please lock your door. We will notify you when we’re done," Ronnie said.
"No no!! This isn’t it; you should go find Wei Tianyang," Jennifer urged.
"What? Who is Wei Tianyang?" Ronnie asked.
"This isn’t just some violent incident... this is..." Jennifer was interrupted.
Suddenly a "bang" sound came from the window.
Ronnie and Jennifer both looked toward the window, only to see a humanoid shadow, like an insect or a giant toad, clinging to the outside of the window glass.
Ms. Jennifer was terrified into silence as Ronnie placed one hand on her shoulder, signaling her to slowly lie down while pulling out his pistol with the other.
The silhouette outside the window suddenly changed direction, moving with the speed of an insect. As it curled its limbs on the glass, a heart-thumping thud resonated.
Ronnie raised the gun, aiming at the shadow.
"Die you Motherfucker!" Ronnie roared.
He emptied the magazine.
The glass shattered, a humid breeze rushed into the room, and the curtains flew towards his face, rendering him blind.
"Ronnie?!" Margaret exclaimed from outside the door.
When Ronnie brushed aside the curtains with his left hand, he saw people crowded at the windows of the apartment building across from them, all staring at him.
Their eyes shimmered with a red glow, like demons.
"NGPD! Everyone, hands up!" Ronnie yelled.
The next second, Ms. Jennifer slid away from his side and as he looked down, a black tendril had entwined around her ankle. It emerged from the window sill, revealing a man whose tongue had morphed into the tentacle.
Ronnie swiftly ejected the magazine while crouching to grab Jennifer’s arm, using all his strength to pull her towards him.
At that moment, the men and women in the building across performed an action he would never forget.
They crawled out of their windows like insects, clinging to the building’s surface, their heads rotating 360 degrees toward Ronnie, and a bizarre bulge at their backs pushed against their clothes as if wings were sprouting.
"Damn it..." Ronnie cursed.
Suddenly, he felt a chilling sensation in his calves. Turning around, he saw several people at the door, one of whom extended a tongue-like appendage wrapping around his ankle.
Ronnie felt an intense burning pain as the tongue tugged sharply, bringing him to the floor instantly, causing the pistol to clatter away.
Ms. Jennifer looked at him in horror; then, she was swiftly dragged to the window and pulled out by several hands.
Ronnie, too, was dragged, stumbling out the door. He covered his head as the person in front dragged him rapidly. He was battered about, also seeing people crawling on the ceiling of the corridor.
They smiled at him as the hallway echoed with jeers and malicious laughter.
He was dragged all the way to the fire escape stairs and pulled down six floors, his head hitting the stairs and railings repeatedly, blood covering his face.
Ronnie reached for the folding knife on his belt, flipped it open, curled into himself, and tried to slice through the tongue.
After two attempts, on the third, he managed to cut a slit in the tongue, and the man screamed, disappearing into the night from the stairwell.
Ronnie stumbled out of the stairwell, shouting, "Margaret! Margaret!"
He looked around; there was no one near the police cars, and quiet had returned, with no sign of Margaret.
Breathing heavily, Ronnie took a few steps, feeling excruciating pain in his left ankle. Rolling up his pant leg, he saw the flesh dissolved down to visibly stark white bones.
"Fuck..." Ronnie cursed.
He leaned on the police car to return inside, retrieved a medical kit, dressed his head and ankle wounds, and then picked up the radio. "Headquarters! Headquarters! This is 0042, over!"
"0042, received. What happened?" The operator sensed the urgency in his voice.
"Officer missing, supernatural occurrence discovered... I’m injured... need backup, they are numerous. Over!" Ronnie reported.
"Received, we will send state police for assistance, stay in a safe location. Over," Headquarters responded.
"No, don’t send state police, send the military. I have to go... I have to find Margaret! Over," Ronnie said, then put down the radio.
He exited the police car, went to the back, and unlocked the trunk with his key. Inside the black gun case, there was a semi-automatic shotgun and three boxes of green-headed shells.
Ronnie unwrapped a box of shells, removed the plastic cap from the barrel, and loaded the shells one by one. Then, he stuffed the other two boxes into his coat pockets.
"Bitches... I’m coming for you!" Ronnie said, as he cocked the gun.
