Chapter 298: Chapter 296: Only I Escaped to Bring You the News

They exited the small stone chamber, and Zhao Ling immediately ordered to level the place and fill it up, and specifically instructed that Li Ruyun’s body be chopped up, burned to ash, and then taken back to Fengrao City to be scattered on the national highway with the most vehicle traffic, so that even in death, she would have to endure the agony of being mercilessly crushed by cars.

Wei Tianyang arrived at the third floor of the attic, which was his room. Zhao Ling had purposely arranged for Yaha to stay on the second floor and had assigned a few female attendants to take care of her.

This arrangement somewhat displeased him, and he was aware that Zhao Ling was treating him like a canary, kept in this quaint setting, unseen and untouched by others.

Wei Tianyang did not raise any objections for the time being, but in reality, he had already begun to consider leaving Yin Country.

No, not consider, but plan.

He had previously decided to rebuild the Pei Guode Hotel and establish a sanctuary through a secretive identity. Even though he now enjoyed a lofty status and did not worry about money, he had witnessed Zhao Ling’s methods of seizing power, seen Steijie being controlled, and also seen Fogen vanish without a trace after a wrong move.

The person sitting on the throne of power might not truly hold control over that power...

And he did not wish to become a human weapon for the Presidents. He longed to connect with those who genuinely cared about humanity’s future, not politics and the throne of power.

Those who chased fame and profit could bring harm to the world through their desires, but once in power, even those greedy for wealth and indulgence, indirectly granted their jurisdiction rules and order.

Previously, he thought justice and evil, right and wrong were clearly distinct.

But after interacting with these Presidents, he realized that the so-called world order was inherently chaotic. Under the same legal framework, both law-abiding evildoers and law-breaking victims could arise.

Erasing the injustices of the world and ending all evil acts seemed like empty talk, increasingly unrealistic.

And back then, his own statement, "What I want is justice," whenever he recalled it, would bring him shame and self-reproach.

Justice...

Justice is defined by the powerful...

If he chose to define justice, then he was no different from those evildoers.

"Let’s go see Yaha first..." Wei Tianyang pushed open the door to Yaha’s room, and a fragrance of peach blossoms hit him.

Yaha, dressed in a white robe, sat on the balcony, staring blankly at the distant mountains.

She looked the same as she had three years ago, as if time had stopped on her.

Wei Tianyang realized that he had not accompanied Yaha for a long time; she had lost her memory and everything else, she must feel particularly lonely.

He closed the room door, walked quickly to the balcony, and moved a chair to sit next to Yaha.

Seeing that it was Wei Tianyang who had come, Yaha’s stiff expression suddenly smiled, her smile as radiant as when they first met in Chicken Snake Country.

Wei Tianyang couldn’t hear her thoughts; even if she lifted her bare wrists laughing, throwing herself on him repeating childish words, he couldn’t hear a single sound.

This was only her shell; her soul was still sunk at the bottom of the sea.

"Yaha..." Wei Tianyang pushed her back into the seat, gently caressed her cheek with one hand, letting himself sink into the deep sea of her memory.

In the pitch-black sea of memory, Wei Tianyang was like a drowning ghost, continually sinking.

Sparse fragments of memory, like dead whales, also sank with him into the dark abyss.

Wei Tianyang couldn’t find her previous memories; all memory was shattered, leaving only the brief time spent with him in the black house.

At that moment, Wei Tianyang truly realized that Yaha was dead.

What was alive now was not the complete her, but a spirit of vengeance.

Yaha, would exist forever as Yaha, Captain Yaha would battle Moby Dick to the end.

Her body was shattered that day and then recklessly patched together by something called vengeance.

The only intact memory near Wei Tianyang formed a scene resembling the descent of a whale, composed of brilliant white lights.

Wei Tianyang had swam forward with all his might, as though he had grasped a floating coffin in the sea, and with that force, plunged into his memories.

He opened his eyes and woke up in bed once again.

This small room was his hotel guest room, yet, his nostrils were filled with thick smoke and a choking smell.

He got out of bed and went to the window, where he saw three charred tanks parked outside, and a helicopter that had crashed in the artificial forest.

All he could hear were gunshots and beast-like roars, but no human figure was in sight.

Wei Tianyang exited the room, finding himself in the familiar long corridor, now blocked by circles of black mist.

He knocked on the Kacha door; it opened, but there wasn’t a soul inside.

In the center of the floor, two handguns were crossed over each other. Wei Tianyang recognized them; they were Kacha’s and Starbucks’ service pistols.

He walked forward, reaching out to grab them, but as he did, he heard the rat-tat-tat of a submachine gun near his ear. He turned his head, but still, no one was around. When he turned back, the barrels of those two handguns were oozing fresh blood, staining the faded wooden floor red.

Wei Tianyang stepped past the handguns, lifting up the window. Behind it, the forest was densely packed with dark figures.

They stood armed, some had fallen, but most maintained a sprinting posture toward the house.

Wei Tianyang climbed out the window and scaled down the drainpipe to the fourth floor, then elbowed through the window glass and crawled into a room on the fourth floor, pushing open the door.

Here, there were no gunshots; the air had turned normal. He saw Captain Yaha’s driver standing by the stairway window, smoking. Hearing the noise, the driver turned to look at him.

"Is that girl... all right?" the driver asked.

What girl?

Wei Tianyang was stunned.

"I drove as fast as I could," said the driver.

Wei Tianyang felt a sinking feeling in his heart, remembering the 4-year-old girl with burns all over her body whom he had seen in the factory...

By now, she should be almost 8 years old.

"She... she will recover," Wei Tianyang said.

The driver did not respond, just nodded, turned his head back to his cigarette, and in a trance, the stairwell was empty.

Wei Tianyang hurried into the stairwell. The scent of smoke lingered, but the person was gone.

He shook his head and continued up the stairs, reaching halfway up the sixth floor only to bump into a group of boys coming down, the Electromagnetic Waves among them.

"Hey, new guy! Don’t be late for tonight’s initiation ceremony!" they said, laughing and squeezing past him, rushing downstairs.

"Damn it..." Wei Tianyang felt a wave of irritation inside him. He hurried up to the seventh floor; Captain Yaha’s room was just ahead.

Approaching the door, his movements slowed.

Squeaks of rats emanated from the room. He gently pushed open the door. Yaha sat behind a long table, bathed in daylight, turning into a dark shadow within the light, only his amber-colored eyes shining brightly.

The ceiling was filled with small cages; the rats inside were chirping and restless.

Wei Tianyang focused and saw on Yaha’s table, a white dead rat lay.

At that moment, the building began to shake, and the floor trembled. Behind Yaha, outside the window, a giant whale slowly swam by, blocking all the light. As the body slowly moved, the blood-red whale’s eye seemed like a huge mouth about to devour everything, lingering outside the window.

The room was left with only the light from the corner candles.

Only then did Wei Tianyang make out the expression on Yaha’s face, a complex mix of weakness, helplessness, fear, and reluctance.

Yaha looked toward Wei Tianyang and said, "Ishmael. Tell me, what is the ending in the end?"

Wei Tianyang shook his head, softly saying, "Only I escaped to bring you this message..."
