Chapter 949: Chapter 949 You Want Me, I’m There
Just as she entered the Chen Family compound, she heard bursts of crying.
Chen Tong’s family lived in a siheyuan, along with several other families. Suizi initially thought someone else was mourning.
Only when she walked closer did she realize the crying came from Chen Tong’s home.
As Suizi hurried in, she saw Chen Tong’s frail and sickly mother crying as if she was about to suffocate while Chen Tong himself stood in a corner, utterly spiritless and motionless.
"What’s wrong?" Suizi asked.
"His uncle... he’s gone," Chen Tong’s mother said before breaking into another round of tears, leaving Suizi in shock.
"Didn’t we save him yesterday?"
"Don’t even mention it..."
Chen Tong’s mother wept as she recounted the events.
Chen Tong had brought medicine over yesterday, and it indeed saved his uncle’s life.
Suizi personally escorted them to the hospital, and everything seemed fine at that point.
But the problem occurred after his uncle returned home.
Chen Tong had watched his uncle enter the compound with his own eyes. Their homes were not far apart, both in the same alley, just a few minutes’ walk from each other.
Chen Tong had even personally bade his uncle farewell and returned home, contented.
In the evening, the Chens ran out of soy sauce, and Chen Tong’s mother sent him to the grocery store with a small bucket to refill it.
Just as he arrived at the grocery store, he saw his uncle approaching on a bicycle, and a speeding truck came towards them.
To Chen Tong, everything seemed to happen in slow motion.
"His uncle was hit and flung into the air right in front of him. This boy seemed to turn into an idiot; when he came back, he couldn’t speak anymore," Chen Tong’s mother lamented inconsolably.
"When his uncle passed by my house on his bike, I even asked if he wanted to come in for a chat. If he had stayed, would this tragedy have been avoided?"
Shocked, Suizi didn’t know what to say, now understanding why the children had reacted that way yesterday.
The children must have seen something on his uncle’s body, and while she and Chen Tong thought he’d been saved, the two children knew that his fate couldn’t be changed.
Suizi wasn’t close to the elder, but she was worried about Chen Tong.
At that moment, Chen Tong stood as if he had lost his soul, listless in his corner, having suffered a tremendous shock.
"Aunt, I’ll take Tongtong to stay with me tonight. It seems like the child is traumatized, I’ll talk to him," Suizi suggested.
Chen Tong’s mother was naturally agreeable.
She was unwell, and her son wouldn’t talk to her; having him at home only made her anxious.
"Then, when the funeral is over, bring him back. I’m sorry for troubling you, Suizi. The boy has caused you so much trouble before; it’s kind of you to still care for him," Chen Tong’s mother sobbed, reproaching herself for suspecting others’ kindness.
Suizi’s act of repaying with kindness made her feel very ashamed.
"We are all family, there’s no need for such words, Aunt. Take care of yourself," Suizi said.
After comforting the aunt for a while, seeing her cry so heartbrokenly also made Suizi’s nose tingle. She was easily moved to tears and couldn’t stand to witness these partings of life and death.
When Chen Tong saw her crying, his eyes finally snapped back to reality and he instinctively wiped her tears without a second thought.
His own mother could faint from crying and he would act as if he hadn’t seen it, but a few tears from Suizi and he couldn’t bear it.
Fearing that Chen Tong’s mother would notice something amiss, Suizi hastily led Chen Tong away.
"Want some ice cream?" Suizi asked.
"Do you think I’m a child?" Chen Tong replied wearily.
Although his body was only twelve years old, his soul was in its thirties.
Suizi didn’t respond to him, silently parked the car, bought two ice creams, returned to the car, and handed one to Chen Tong, who didn’t accept it.
He was a person with integrity; he couldn’t be fooled by tactics used to placate children.
"Just consider it as fulfilling my wish," Suizi said to herself, "When I first adopted you, we really struggled financially. There were several times when I saw you wanting ice cream on the street, I could only afford one for you, even though I also really wanted some. Now that I have money, we can enjoy it together."
Chen Tong looked at her with some surprise.
In his memory, Suizi was an iron lady, a strong woman. Did a strong woman also crave ice cream?
"You weren’t like this before..."
"Before, even if I wanted some, I couldn’t say it, could I? Would it be right for me to compete with my son for ice cream? Now, it’s different. Your foster father takes good care of me." Who would want to be a tough woman when they could be tender and loving?
"Foster father?!" Chen Tong was stunned. It couldn’t be what he was thinking, right? It made him feel a bit queasy.
"I am your foster mother, so my husband is your foster father, any problem?"
The ice cream in Chen Tong’s mouth turned sour.
"What’s so good about him? Whatever he can give you, I can too. You want ice cream? When I earn money later on, I’ll open an ice cream factory for you. You could even lie in a tub and eat it if you wanted."
"He’s a very good father. You’ll certainly get along well," Suizi wished Yu Jingting was at home.
She thought communication between men might be simpler? With her clumsy tongue, she always fell short when trying to comfort someone.
"Then I might as well be dead." He found Yu Jingting annoying every time he saw him.
"Don’t speak too soon. He had some reservations about you when you were younger, but you’re different now. He will surely enjoy your company. And we have your younger brothers and sisters at home; you help take care of them, and let them grow up to contribute to the country like you," Suizi suggested.
Once Suizi was sure her adopted son wasn’t a traitor, Chen Tong immediately rose in her heart to become the great pillar of the country.
She tried hard to sketch out a future for Chen Tong, hoping he wouldn’t feel too guilty about his uncle’s matter.
Chen Tong banged his head against the car, resenting the idea of acknowledging a thief as his father and having to care for the children she had with another man. He would rather be dead.
"You have made an effort. Your uncle’s accident wasn’t your fault," Suizi tried to console him.
"He was hit right before my eyes, do you know? When a person gets hit by a car, they can be thrown as high as a house. I watched him get thrown into the air, and then he hit the ground."
Suizi’s eyes were filled with sorrow; she could understand his feelings.
If he hadn’t witnessed it, maybe things could’ve been a bit better. Witnessing it, the shock was too great.
"I am useless. I thought becoming a hero was for your sake, but it just made you depressed. I didn’t even see him one last time. I thought I could change everything when I came back, but then you got married! The elder I respected most died right in front of my eyes. What’s the point of my rebirth?" Chen Tong shouted, his eyes red.
"Your uncle’s accident was just fate. It had nothing to do with you. I got married, but now you have siblings and a great foster father with you. Isn’t that good?"
"To hell with the foster father! Even if all the men in the world were dead, I wouldn’t acknowledge him as my foster father! Yu Jingting, I curse you bloody hell!" Chen Tong screamed until his veins bulged.
The car door opened and a hand with distinct knuckles reached in, grabbed Chen Tong by the collar, and with a forceful pull, dragged him from the passenger seat.
Suizi was frightened to the core.
"Chen Tong you little bastard, missing me that much? You want me, well, here I am! Today I’m going to straighten you out for sure!"
Yu Jingting, who hadn’t been seen for several days, stood outside the car. He had just gotten off the plane, had yet to return home, but came earlier to surprise his wife.
He happened to pass by and recognized his own car so he came over.
Just in time to hear Chen Tong cursing him!
"Jingting, you can’t hit him!" Suizi hurried out of the car to stop him.
