Chapter 88: You Have No Merits At All
Chapter 88: Chapter 88: You Have No Merits At All
After seeing off Professor Wang, the Yu Family had a family meeting.
Wang Cuihua sat cross-legged on the kang, her face beamed with pure joy.
"I’ve always said that Suizi is a lucky charm for her husband. How wonderful it is, our family will soon have a non-agricultural household registration. If Suizi is registered non-agricultural, does that mean my Xiaosun doesn’t have to be a farmer and will eat purchased grain instead?"
Having a non-agricultural household registration meant getting access to some scarce commodities, a life much coveted by hard-working farmers.
Suizi leaned against the cabinet, saying nothing.
Yu Jingting saw his mother was irrepressibly excited, and looked at the gloomy face of Suizi, he sighed.
"Old lady, aren’t you getting ahead of yourself? We’re not even sure about moving to the city, why are you hollering?"
At these words, Suizi, previously demoralised, lifted her head to look at Yu Jingting, her eyes somewhat blank.
In the world of grown-ups, there was only gain or loss, no right or wrong.
This opportunity, for Suizi and even for the entire Yu Family, was a chance.
Yu Jingting was so smart, he must understand what this meant. He should be as happy as his mother-in-law. Why did he say that?
"Are you stupid? Why wouldn’t you seize this good fortune of a stuffed pancake falling from the sky? You two should leave as soon as the New Year is over, don’t lose your place to someone else. I’ve heard the city is full of underhanded deals, backdoor operations are commonplace."
At the mention of the term "backdoor", Suizi’s face darkened even more.
Did she "leap over the dragon gate" because her mother pulled some strings?
"Old lady, why not just cook and stop stirring things up? My daughter-in-law was the number one in her class. Going to the city is actually beneath her!"
Suizi’s eyes reddened and she was on the verge of tears.
Yu Jingting was comforting her. She understood.
Used to being uncared for, suddenly someone understood her feelings. How could she not be moved?
For fear of losing control of her emotions and bursting into tears, Suizi changed the subject.
"Mom, I don’t want to go to the city... If Tiegen and I leave, what will you do?"
Wang Cuihua had a carefree heart, but it was suddenly gripped by her daughter-in-law’s tearful voice.
She thought to herself how sensible her daughter-in-law was!
"Whether you’re here or not, it makes no difference to me. I’m used to living in the country, and I’d hate to leave——Oh, don’t cry." Wang Cuihua quickly signaled to her son with her eyes.
Yu Jingting was closer to Suizi and could easily wipe away her tears.
Suizi’s tears were complex, there was gratitude towards Yu Jingting, reluctance to part with her mother-in-law, and unspeakable resentment and frustration towards her own mother.
If she packed up and left, would her mother look down on her? She could endure her mother’s disdain, but what if her husband was also looked down on?
"Don’t worry, once Suizi has her baby, I’ll definitely go over to help take care of things during the month of confinement. Once you two have settled down in the city and have your own nest, I’ll move in."
Seeing Suizi cry made Wang Cuihua’s eyes red as well.
"If only your grandfather was still alive, how wonderful it would be for him to see you all succeeding...No one in our family has left the village for generations. He left us too soon."
Wang Cuihua’s words left Suizi feeling even more conflicted.
"I’m going to make noodles. We’ve had so many blessings today, so I’ll make a heart-warming noodle dish."
Wang Cuihua got off the kang and quickly wiped away her tears when she turned her back to the kids.
Only Suizi and Yu Jingting remained in the room.
Suizi cried silently. Yu Jingting had been wiping her tears endlessly, but they just wouldn’t stop.
"Ah..." he sighed, "During the past drought, we should have planted you in the field. Your tears would have been enough to irrigate all our fields."
Usually, when he joked like this, she’d have already been laughing through her tears.
But today, no amount of coaxing helped. She continued to cry.
Yu Jingting put his arm around her, his eyes gazing out the window at the accumulated snow. He stared for a while before calmly speaking.
"If only Li Youcai was here, he’d be great, delivering a combination punch for you."
Seeing his serious demeanor and hearing his solemn tone, Suizi couldn’t help but stop crying.
"Okay, stop crying or your eyes will turn into tiny walnuts. What’s the big deal? If you want to go to the city, go. If you don’t want to, then don’t. Why are you crying?"
"Don’t you want to go to the city?" Suizi asked.
"Either way, wherever we are, I won’t let you starve. As long as you’re happy."
Suizi looked into his eyes, the dark depths of which held an uncommon sharpness as well the purity expected of his age.
If she hadn’t seen the splendor he held in his previous life, she would have thought this man before her was genuinely simple-minded.
Such a complex matter full of interests was transformed into a light-hearted sentence by him, "as long as you’re happy".
"Look at yourself, aren’t you overthinking and exhausting yourself? Do whatever you want, do whatever makes you happy."
Upon hearing Yu Jingting’s words, four Chinese characters came to Suizi’s mind: "Mind free of distractions".
This was a simple truth only those with extraordinary wisdom could understand, it was what wise people understood about the universe, life and the world...
Suizi looked at him with an intense sense of admiration.
Yu Jingting rubbed his chin, then added with a suggestive look:
"Whether you want to ’do it’ in the village or in the city, it’s merely the difference between doing it on a kang or on a bed. Pick a place you like, I don’t understand why you’re hesitating?"
"..." With that, the rose-colored glasses smashed to the ground.
"Then, have you considered that after moving to the city, more people might think we’re not suitable for each other?" Suizi bit her lip, expressing her concerns.
"Let them talk then, their mouths are on their faces, we can’t control them." He will just beat whomever says it, if their parents have failed to teach them manners, he will. It was simple.
Yu Jingting pinched Suizi’s nose playfully, his tone a mix of jest and sincerity.
"You always overcomplicate simple problems, is this something all educated people suffer from? Just like you, my mother-in-law is the same. Back then it was because she thought too much, that’s why she ended up marrying that useless Chen Kaide."
"Eh? What do you know?" Suizi immediately perked up.
She had never heard this part of the history before.
To appease his wife, Yu Jingting had no sense of propriety, he even brought out her mother’s unknown past.
"I heard this from the older generation in the village who knew the story, my mother-in-law also mentioned it once when she was drunk, it’s definitely a hidden history."
"Who are these ’informed individuals’? Just say it’s our mom." Suizi pointed out.
She had already figured it out that her mother-in-law and her own mother definitely had a close relationship, but she didn’t understand why it wasn’t apparent in the village.
Yu Jingting coughed awkwardly: "Who said it doesn’t matter, let’s just talk about this situation."
It was said that Suizi’s mother, Chen Lijun, had a first love that she had grown up with. During their youth, they ended up in different teams after being sent to the countryside, far apart from each other. During the autumn harvest, when everyone was busy farming, Chen Lijun secretly went to see the man she loved.
"What ended up happening, was she saw her first love sitting on a heap of grain, bragging about how he’d kissed another girl. It absolutely outraged my mother-in-law."
"What?! So, she cried and ran back?"
"No, she set the grain pile on fire... Dear wife, why didn’t you inherit any of your mother-in-law’s good traits? But her petty tendencies seem to have passed on to you."
Setting the grain pile on fire was, in Yu Jingting’s eyes, an absolute advantage.
