Chapter 811: Chapter 811 Watching the Bustle and Running Away Fast
Fan Huang’s mother appeared behind Chen Lijun with several people, and Fan Huang glanced over, the corners of his mouth twitching.
Apart from the Mei Family members, there was also an old lady with glasses, looking scholarly and genteel.
Although she wasn’t wearing a white lab coat, Fan Huang recognized her at a glance.
This was their family’s long-acquainted traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
"Have you eaten yet?" Chen Lijun, having had her fill, was in a good mood and could greet even the most annoying people with a smile.
"Don’t you try to cozy up to me," Fan Huang’s mother glared at Chen Lijun with hatred, then turned to ask Fan Huang, "I’m asking you one last time, are you going to listen to me or not?"
"No," Fan Huang was unwilling to say an extra word.
Suizi, from a distance, saw Fan Huang’s mother bring people over and hurriedly tugged at Yu Jingting to get there.
"No rush, let’s go over after the roasted corn is ready," Yu Jingting insisted, watching over the roasting corn stall, its aroma wafting through the air.
These snacks were something they could eat at will back in their hometown, now they have to pay for them.
"What time is it, and you’re still worrying about roasted corn?"
"Relax, look at our dad, does he seem unsure of himself?"
"It’s not about whether he’s sure or not! I’m worried about being late and missing the exciting part! After all this build-up, we finally reached today, and it would be a shame to miss it just for some roasted corn!"
As soon as the excitement of watching the commotion was mentioned, Yu Jingting was invigorated.
"Save some for us when it’s done, we’ll come by later!" Having paid, Yu Jingting watched as Suizi hurried off towards the scene.
Fan Huang’s mother felt that she held the winning cards and had Chen Lijun firmly within her grasp.
"The doctor is here, I’m giving you one last chance. Agree to my terms now, and in a few months, Chen Lijun will be able to hold a child. By then, you’ll have both children and a respectable job. Otherwise, heh, once the doctor has taken the pulse, I’ll go straight to your workplace to expose you."
Fan Huang’s mother delivered her ultimatum, and Suizi, out of breath, arrived just in time to hear this part.
"Heh, now you’re spirited," Chen Lijun commented, rolling her eyes at her maiden’s gossipy expression.
"I’m just concerned for my dear mother," Suizi said, her eyes wide as brass bells, as if she wanted to say, leave me out of this, carry on.
Fan Huang’s mother felt goosebumps rise at the mention of "dear."
The last time Suizi had said this, she had rubbed chicken manure all over her, and it wasn’t until she got back that Fan Huang’s mother realized just how disgusted she felt.
"Children should stay out of their elders’ conversations, go to the side!"
Suizi obediently nodded her head. This was her father showing his authority, something she didn’t want to get involved in, but gossip was to be closely watched. She still had to recount it all to her mother-in-law later.
"Make your decision," Fan Huang’s mother, seeing Suizi so well-behaved, thought she had been intimidated and was very pleased, laying down her final ultimatum to Fan Huang.
"Ask as many times as you want, the answer is the same. I won’t agree to any of it," he said.
"Won’t shed tears until you see the coffin! Doctor Xue, let’s go! I’m going to expose this woman’s fake pregnancy certificate right now!"
Fan Huang’s mother was furious and ready to burn all bridges, her eyes still fixed on Fan Huang, waiting for him to change his mind.
Doctor Xue extended her hand precisely onto Chen Lijun’s wrist, while the people from the Mei Family behind Fan Huang’s mother were also watching Yu Jingting fiercely, afraid that he would step in and cause trouble.
They discovered that Yu Jingting’s gaze was fixated on the stir-fried seafood stand nearby, unblinking.
This feeling of being disregarded was subtle; Yu Jingting simply didn’t take them seriously, even deeming street food as more important than them.
"Hmm..." Doctor Xue exchanged a look with Fan Huang and nodded at him.
"Is there a problem?" Fan Huang asked.
"It’s quite good, don’t worry," Doctor Xue said with a double meaning.
Fan Huang’s mother could never have imagined that Doctor Xue had already been won over by Fan Huang and had even been taken to see Chen Lijun for a pulse diagnosis several times before.
"I’ve gained quite a few taels lately!" Chen Lijun complained.
"Haha, you’re experiencing middle-aged prosperity!" Mother Fan didn’t quite understand and took the opportunity to tease Chen Lijun.
"Putting on some weight is normal. It shows that your appetite is good, which is a blessing," Dr. Xue said with a smiling face.
"Blessing? She’s about to be out of luck! Let’s go! Fan Huang, you’ve forced my hand!"
Mother Fan left, glancing back every three steps in warning.
"Grandma, you look exactly like I did when I threatened my mom that I’d run away from home if she didn’t buy me candy," Suizi shared her feelings.
"Did the threat work?" Fan Huang was quite interested.
Suizi shrugged, effective my ass.
"Not only did she not buy me candy, she locked me out. I cried my eyes out, and she still didn’t open the door. In the end, I had to apologize before she let me in." Suizi still considered that painful memory a childhood trauma.
Fan Huang’s eyes curved, indeed resembling Xiaochen’s style of child-rearing—quite staunch.
While the family bonded over small talk, leaving Mother Fan aside, she felt like an ignored, angry child desperate to make some noise to draw attention.
"Jingting, you and Suizi drive Grandma. Wherever she wants to go, take her there," Fan Huang said.
"But I still have two taels of corn roasting, it’s almost ready!"
At the mention of roasted corn, Chen Lijun’s face immediately lit up with joy.
"It’s traditional virtue to respect the elderly and care for the young. Hurry up and go; I’ll bring the roasted corn back for you."
"If I let you help carry it, we’ll end up with nothing but the bare cobs," Suizi muttered under her breath.
"Complaining about helping an elder? Hurry up and go!" Now all Chen Lijun could think about was the roasted corn.
From anger, Mother Fan shifted to smugness. She felt her son was still afraid of her and was sending Jingting and his wife to talk her into things on the drive.
All along the way, Mother Fan waited for Jingting and Suizi to beg for mercy first.
"Grandma, there’s something I’ve been holding back for a long time," Suizi said.
"What? Are you trying to speak on behalf of your mother? That’s fine, as long as you agree to my terms—"
"No, I want to say that this purple-eggplant color you’re wearing makes you look particularly drab."
"???"
Jingting chimed in cooperatively, "Especially like a wilted old eggplant that’s been sitting under the sun unable to sell all day, and your face is so shiny it even reflects sunlight."
Mother Fan’s nostrils flared, fuming with anger.
Jingting had always been quite potent at riling people up, and this description was enough to enrage Mother Fan.
"A shiny old eggplant might not taste good in a stew, it’s tough, wrinkly, and insists on making a fuss to cling to its long-gone youth, slathering on makeup all the way into the coffin, desperate to save face," Jingting added insultingly.
"You ill-mannered thing! How dare you insult me like this?!"
"I have been very polite! Wife, tell her how I talk to strangers," he said.
"Um, let me think..." Suizi recalled Jingting’s repertoire of insults and picked one that was contextually similar.
"If it were someone else, Jingting might say, ’That face is too pale, looks half-dead already—really, Grandma, he’s been very restrained with you.’
"Good! Today I’ll make sure you regret this!"
Mother Fan still had some hesitations; after all, she only intended to scare her son and feared losing face if things got too serious. But stirred up by the back-and-forth with Jingting and Suizi, her anger made her direct Jingting to drive straight to the home of Chen Lijun’s immediate supervisor.
"Wait a minute!" Jingting called out as the old lady got out of the car.
"Regretting it now? There’s still time!"
"No, I just think it’s impolite to visit someone’s home empty-handed, you see, I’ve even prepared a gift for you."
