I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 753: Shocking to the Eye
Chapter 753: Chapter 753: Shocking to the Eye
Upon seeing the children dig out a box, Suizi’s first reaction was that it might have been someone’s buried pet cat or dog.
"Put it back quickly!" Suizi snatched the box and immediately returned it to the ground without giving it a thought.
In the heat of summer, she had no idea how long the box had been buried. If upon opening the box it was filled with maggots, it could traumatize the children.
"It doesn’t seem like an animal. You keep the kids away." Yu Jingting directed his wife and kids back while he picked up a small branch from the ground to pry open the box.
Dragging a curious child with each hand, Suizi closed her eyes, not daring to look. But curiosity got the better of her, and she peeked with one eye open.
There was no strange smell, only something dark inside.
"A toy gun!" Luoluo reached out to grab the item in the box, but was stopped by Yu Jingting’s hand.
"Don’t touch, it’s not a toy."
Startled, Suizi thought, could it be a real gun?
The nationwide gun ban order had not come into effect yet, and officials were still allowed to carry guns, like Fan Huang.
There were hunting guns in some local hunters’ homes, but in recent years, they had been gradually tightened due to incidents caused by officials’ improper storage of guns.
"This is a Type 64 pistol, issued to officials. Most likely, someone stole it or snatched it and buried it here." Yu Jingting looked up, admired his two human "treasure detectors".
"You two really know how to pick a spot."
With this vast woodland and so many places to choose from, these two kids had to pick this spot.
"What do we do now, do we call the police?" Suizi anxiously looked around, afraid of being noticed.
"We certainly need to notify the police. What if the culprit comes to dig up the gun while we’re reporting it? Call Xiaopang over."
Yu Jingting decided promptly to have Xiaopang fetch the imitation gun from his drawer at home.
Yu Jingting just so happened to have a lighter someone had gifted him that looked very similar to the gun in the box. It was a bit lighter, but an untrained person wouldn’t have been able to tell.
"Won’t this be discovered?" Suizi asked.
"It definitely won’t work to trick someone who handles guns daily, like our two uncles, but it’s enough to fool the average person."
Xiaopang fetched the lighter as per Yu Jingting’s instructions. Meanwhile, Yu Jingting exchanged the items secretly while Suizi kept the children busy by holding a funeral for the centipede.
They buried it under the tree opposite to where the gun was buried. At this moment, Suizi had no idea how much their unintentional action would change the fate of so many people, or that one day she would lead her kids to put fresh flowers on the centipede’s "grave" to commemorate this extraordinary coincidence.
After handing the recovered gun to the police station, all the local police officers knew them.
"You two are really impressive. This is the second case you’ve assisted the police with, isn’t it? With one more, we can propose you for an outstanding citizen award, you know. Competition for Outstanding Citizen of our precinct is fierce."
"Uhm, please present this honor to those keen-eyed elderly folks." Suizi replied with a polite yet awkward smile.
Frankly speaking, they did not particularly desire this ability to attract suspects and solve cases, thanks.
Upon returning from the police station, she saw a box in the courtyard.
It was tightly wrapped, but there was no postal slip on it.
"Where did it come from?"
The nanny was on leave, and she had specifically asked her parents to lock the courtyard before leaving home.
Was the main door’s lock intact? Had someone climbed over the wall?
Suizi looked at Jingting, his brows furrowed, seeming to have a bad premonition. He instructed Suizi to bring the children inside, then he opened the box to find, much to his expectation, a decapitated dead chicken.
Jingting took the box outside to dispose of it. This was something he didn’t want his wife or children to see.
After all, they just held a funeral for the centipede specimen. Seeing this would undoubtedly trigger Luoluo to want to hold another funeral this time, for the chicken.
Jingting did not believe this was a prank. He planned to ask the elders at the entrance of the alley if they had seen anything after disposing of the chicken.
Suizi was at home, noticing that Jingting didn’t return right away, and guessed that there was something unpleasant in the box, making her inexplicably nervous.
Could it be that they were caught swapping out the gun by the person who had buried it? Therefore, that person retaliated by infiltrating their home?
Jingting returned after a while.
"Wife, I have good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?"
"Tell me the good news first." Suizi was nearly scared to death by her own speculation and needed a good news to cheer her up.
"An elderly man saw someone climbing our wall. It probably wasn’t the gun hider coming back for revenge."
"How do you know it wasn’t the gun hider?" Suizi asked.
"Because we know the person who climbed in."
"Who?"
"Fan Lili, she might have escaped from the mental hospital."
Fan Lili was Liu Xi’s daughter who had a crush on Jingting and did many radical things in the past. It was confirmed that she had a mental illness and she was sent to a mental hospital in a different city by Suizi and her husband.
It had been a few years since they last saw her, and Suizi had almost forgotten about her, but now she was back.
"Are you sure it’s her?"
"Yes, the elderly man saw her climb our wall and even had a conversation with her. Knowing that our families are related, he didn’t think much of it."
"??? Regardless of whether she’s family or not, doesn’t he find it strange for her to climb over someone else’s wall? Who enters a relative’s house by climbing over the wall instead of using the door?"
"I’ll tell our dad later. You should also call Liu Xi so she knows the situation and will try to find Lili as soon as possible. That crazy woman has problems in her head, I worry she might pose a danger to you and the kids."
Liu Xi didn’t know that Fan Lili had escaped until she got a call from Suizi. She called the mental hospital and found that Lili had been missing for two days. The hospital was afraid of taking responsibility, so they didn’t inform Liu Xi right away and had been looking for Lili everywhere. But they didn’t expect Fan Lili to have taken the train back home.
Fan Huang immediately sent people to search for her, but Fan Lili seemed to have vanished without a trace. She wasn’t found anywhere she might have been.
That night, after Suizi and Jingting had gone to bed, their home phone rang.
Sleepy, Suizi got up and saw that it was already midnight. She yawned as she picked up the phone.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Chen Hansui, I want you dead."
"Fan Lili?!" Suizi became alert, "Where are you?"
"You’ve caused me so much suffering, I won’t let you off."
The phone hung up.
The chilling tone of the voice caused Suizi to break out in a cold sweat, and she couldn’t fall back asleep.
She promptly woke up Jingting, who upon hearing that the call was from Fan Lili, immediately had someone trace the call.
The call had come from a landline at a house not far from Suizi’s. The owners of that house were out traveling and nobody was at home.
When Jingting arrived at the house with the police, Lili was already gone. The room was covered in Suizi’s name written in chicken blood, it was a shocking sight to behold.
