I am chasing a rough man in the 80s -
Chapter 703: Being Reckless
Chapter 703: Chapter 703: Being Reckless
"What should we be careful about in terms of diet?" Suizi took notes item by item.
"Are you two sisters?" The doctor looked curious seeing Yu Jingting and Chen Lijun who somewhat resembled each other.
"She’s my mother."
"If I don’t want to-" Chen Lijun’s words were cut off as Suizi dragged her away.
"Doctor, you can get on with your work. We’ll come back for the next check-up."
"Let go." Chen Lijun tried to shove her off, as Suizi took out a pesticide bottle from her bag.
"Don’t force me to have this medicine."
"Who are you trying to fool with this fake medicine?" Chen Lijun felt it was an insult to her intelligence. Wasn’t this just a tactic used by Jingting to deceive people?
"This is a hospital corridor. It’s embarrassing for us to be pulling and dragging each other like this. You are a person who cares about face. Are you sure you want to discuss this with me here?"
"Let’s go outside and talk."
Chen Lijun noticed some curious nurses looking their way, which made her flush.
This brat really knows how to handle her; she can’t afford to lose face.
Once out of the hospital, the mother-daughter duo found a spot under an isolated tree. Chen Lijun shook off Suizi’s arm.
"Are you arresting a criminal?"
"I’m afraid you’ll do something stupid. Mom, I respect your wishes. If you don’t want to give birth, discuss it with dad. No matter what decision you make, we will support you, but the decision must be made between husband and wife."
"Why do I have the feeling that you seem prepared for this?" Chen Lijun narrowed her eyes.
A few years ago, her daughter insisted that she and Fan Huang have a check-up annually. For a while, she even carried around Chinese medicine for her and Fan Huang, claiming it was for maintaining their health. She often mentioned the possibility of having younger siblings. It was rather suspicious.
"Honestly, I wouldn’t gamble with my own mother’s life. I asked for an authoritative opinion long ago to make sure it wouldn’t endanger you. The Chinese medicine we gave you is also for health improvement. But whether you can have a baby or not, you will have to depend on yourselves."
"Did you start thinking about all this so early?"
"Don’t you forget what I do? I am a military adviser. I look at things from a long-term perspective, considering all the possible issues that may arise, including those concerning our family. I have thought about what unpredictable factors may occur in our family in the future, how many of them I can control, as well as the ones I can’t."
"Then what do you think this child will bring to the family?"
"It will give my dad the paternal involvement he lost years ago. There is a 70% chance it will increase the affection between you and dad. The 30% chance that the child may negatively affect your relationship can be mitigated by our family’s financial strength. So long as you both are responsible and we have some extra money, having a child in general will bring more joy than sorrow."
Rich people usually love to have children. The economic pressure brought about by parenting, conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, between husband and wife, and even between both parents’ families, can all be resolved by money.
Poor people also don’t mind having more children. Despite the strict birth-control policy, some would rather live in poverty than not have a son. They are already poor and there’s no further step down.
Those who worry are the middle classes. Their living conditions are neither good nor bad. Having one child is just right; having more requires a reduction in their standard of living, or even giving up their jobs.
"To outsiders, you need the child to secure dad’s place in the household and to keep the Fan Family’s mouths shut. But I know that’s unnecessary. You have already given birth to an excellent child like me, and dad is not one who favors sons over daughters."
Chen Lijun looked at Suizi. When her daughter started to argue articulately, she managed to consider every aspect of the situation.
"It’s not without drawbacks, the main one being the age issue. I anticipated this and sought the best Chinese doctor to try and eliminate some of the risks as far as possible. The rest is left to fate. Apparently, heaven believes that you’re too good at having children. Having me, this excellent child, to benefit society is not enough. It’s granting you and dad another chance to bless society."
Chen Lijun couldn’t help but laugh. This girl always found a way to fit self-praise into her words. But she had a point.
"I’m looking forward to seeing the kind of child my dad will raise."
"Why not me?"
"You’re just another big baby. You need pampering and gentle care. How can I rely on you for anything?"
Chen Lijun felt somewhat frustrated by Suizi’s words and was unable to counteract them.
"I didn’t say I wouldn’t have the child. Why do you keep prattling on? Aren’t you tired?"
"Hmm? Then why did you ask the doctor?"
"I was asking whether or not I could quit my job. Who told you to jump in without letting me finish?"
Suizi laughed awkwardly. She had been hasty.
"Back then, I managed to give birth to you amidst all the pressure. There is no reason why I shouldn’t let this child live now. Just-"
Chen Lijun felt unusually embarrassed.
"Now at this age, I always feel a bit... Those who dislike me will probably laugh their teeth out."
"You were worried about being laughed at when you got married before. Why do you still care about this after all these years? The people who care about you will be happy to see you doing well. Those who don’t care about you, whatever they say is nonsense; seeing you doing well will only make them angry."
Upon Suizi’s persuasion, Chen Lijun’s chest cleared up. That was right. She just had to live her own life well. The more people mocked, the better she had to live.
Looking at her grown-up daughter, Chen Lijun sighed.
"You’ve taken our lives into account. What about you? If you continue studying and let Jingting go, what will happen?"
"Mom, I know you want Jingting to join the bureaucracy for my sake. A mother’s love for her child is selfless. If not for me, you wouldn’t have gone through all this trouble."
"You understand. That’s good... "
Chen Lijun didn’t know if it was because she was getting older, or perhaps because being pregnant made her more emotional, but seeing Suizi being so understanding made her feel choked up and on the verge of tears.
"Have you calculated the odds of him being led astray by his environment? You’re so stubborn. If he really does find someone else out there, you definitely won’t continue with the relationship. Then what... "
Chen Lijun had seen enough to know there was much to worry about.
"If he really does have someone, of course, I won’t continue. Leaving emotions aside for now, it’s filthy out there. I value my life. What if he catches an STD and passes it to me? Won’t I die of disgust?"
Definitely not going to tolerate a man who cheats; apart from the emotional blow, there is also the risk of contracting diseases. Who wants a filthy man?
"Since you know this, you shouldn’t let Jingting be exposed to such a complex environment."
"My grandfather was a professor. The environment in the college wasn’t chaotic, right? Then how did he get involved with opera singers? If Jingting really joins the officialdom, the choices and temptations he would face would be far more than those in the mall."
Chen Lijun felt that Suizi’s words did make sense. But the more she thought about it, the more frustrated she felt. She muttered to herself while patting her stomach.
"This child, it would be better not to have it. If it is born, I will have to worry for the rest of my life. You are already so grown up and I still have to worry about you. I was not satisfied when you married an ordinary man, thinking that he was not good enough for you. Now that you are married to a terrific man, I’m still worried." She was worried that her son-in-law might betray her daughter.
Suizi, with a broad grin, hugged Chen Lijun’s shoulders: "Mom, you are so full of human warmth now that you’re pregnant. You’re more and more like a good mother, I like it."
"Don’t flatter me now. I am still worrying about you."
"Don’t worry. I can’t guarantee that Jingting won’t change his heart in the future. That’s his business, and I can’t decide it."
"... If you’re not good at comforting people, don’t try!" Suizi’s words further enraged Lijun.
"I didn’t finish my sentence."
