Chapter 652: Chapter 652: Not as Simple as It Seems
Unable to refuse their generosity, Suizi and Yu Jingting climbed onto the delivery truck.
The truck was loaded with large and small cardboard boxes, filled with bits and pieces of things.
"You two live near Tsinghua, don’t you? I recognized you right away, Suizi. You look so much like my sister Jun." Chen He warmly said.
"Many people have said the same." Suizi replied politely, though Yu Jingting could sense her reservedness.
"You’ll get used to all these relatives. Don’t take their words to heart. They also tease me for being a small-time merchant who cannot hold his own in high society. Well, we can’t care too much about others’ opinions in life."
Upon hearing this, Suizi and her husband agreed and nodded in acknowledgment.
Throughout the journey, Chen He tried to find topics to chat with the couple. He was a local and was characteristic of one, being warm, talkative, knowledgeable, and having a hint of cunning beneath his frankness - attributes of a typical small-time trader.
When they arrived at their destination, Chen He unloaded a box from the truck.
"These are just some fruits for Sister Jun. I won’t go in."
As Yu Jingting reached out to take it, Suizi opened the box, causing Chen He’s face to shift.
Opening a gift in front of its giver was certainly impolite, but Suizi did regardless.
Inside was a box of premium peaches. They were large in size, and their appearance clearly showed the finest quality. Suizi reached beneath the peaches and pulled out a bundle of cash.
"Suizi, what are you doing?" Chen He’s face fell.
Suizi smiled and placed the money in his hand, politely saying, "We will accept the peaches, but you should keep the money. Let’s not talk about this kind of a thing between us. Don’t make my parents make a mistake."
Yu Jingting’s eyes flickered. He had been careless.
If not for his wife’s carefulness, if they had brought this home, his upright father-in-law would definitely have torn him and Suizi apart.
"Why are you making it such a big deal? You two are married, and I didn’t attend your wedding. Consider this money my wedding gift to you. Take it." Chen He tried to argue with Suizi, but with one glance from her, Yu Jingting stepped in.
Yu Jingting, having learned from his mother, was very proficient in refusing people. With his role now changed, he had to learn how to deal with people in the same way: preserving his integrity by firmly refusing.
Chen He was no match for the robust Yu Jingting. Not only did he fail to shove the money into the hand of Suizi’s husband, but he was also almost pushed to the ground by Yu Jingting.
"If you are in any trouble, you just tell me. I will relay it to my parents. Whether they choose to help is up to them. But no more trying to slip money to any of us. My parents can’t handle this." Suizi said politely.
Holding the stack of money, Chen He awkwardly said, "Actually, there is no issue ..."
"Then we won’t keep you any longer." Suizi made a move to leave.
Seeing this, Chen He had no choice but to reveal his true intentions.
"Actually, there is a little matter..."
Chen He had heard a rumor.
He used to work at a paper mill, holding a mediocre middle management position.
When the mill couldn’t afford to pay salaries due to low profits, he utilized his own time to run some small businesses for additional household income. The truck was taken out from the mill.
"I heard that the higher-ups are considering a reform. I was wondering if you could put in a good word for me and get them to lease the factory to me. I guarantee that once I lease the factory, the profits will double. If I fail to do so, I am willing to accept all punishments."
He had no choice but to relay the proposal to the young couple.
He really wanted to discuss this with Chen Lijun personally, but he didn’t dare to meet Fan Huang. He also knew that Fan wouldn’t listen to him. But he had this dream, unwilling to give up at the word ’go’. He had to do something, even if it meant turning to Suizi and her husband.
"Suizi, can you put in a good word for me? I’ve been working at the paper mill for half my life, and I can’t bear to see it ruined by those people. It’s clearly salvageable..."
Chen He choked up.
The sentimental connection between the workers and the factories of this era was unlike the connection between modern workers and companies. It was more like a farmer’s bond with his land.
Yu Jingting had once managed a factory, and he resonated with Chen He’s words.
When Yu Jingting took over the beer factory, it was on the brink of bankruptcy. There was exploitation at every level, and the government policies were not implemented effectively.
The executives were busy currying favor and had no intention of focusing on production and reform, while middle management was corrupt and self-serving. Those at the bottom were merely getting through the day without any motivation.
Under these circumstances, those who actually did their jobs were pushed away.
Suizi fell silent. Upon calculation, the policy for reform should be implemented by next year. There would be pilot tests in certain areas. This uncle who approached her now showed that he had good foresight and knew who could give him a boost. He was clever.
"My dad, as you probably know, never takes care of his family in his work. Besides, this doesn’t fall under his jurisdiction. My mom just got married and all her attention is focused on giving birth and raising children. She doesn’t want to interfere too much with my dad’s affairs either. I can only help relay your request. Don’t get your hopes too high."
Upon hearing the first part of Suizi’s words, Chen He looked disappointed as if he had lost all hopes. But as she continued, he brightened up instantly. Suizi’s transitions from suppressing to uplifting caused his heart to be tightly grasped.
"As long as you could speak on my behalf, I’ll be greatly indebted." Chen He thanked them profusely. He tried to give them money again, but Suizi sternly refused.
"If you insist on forcing my parents and putting me in a difficult position, just forget about everything I said."
At this point, Chen He gave up. After leaving his contact information, expressing profound gratitude to Suizi and her husband, he finally left.
Yu Jingting took the box of peaches from Suizi’s hands.
"Are you really planning to relay the message for him?"
"At the appropriate time, I will."
What Suizi implied was, now was not the right time.
"Jingting, what’s your take on this suddenly emerged uncle?"
"He never made eye contact with me when he spoke. He must be keeping a lot of secrets."
"Exactly. This man is as cunning as a wasp’s nest. Since his arrival and interaction with us, there have been myriad coincidences and innuendos. Even his gifting technique was textbook. In the future, there will be people trying to give all kinds of gifts to our parents. We can’t let them get close. We need to reject them the moment they make contact with us."
As for this uncle, Suizi always felt there was more to it than meets the eye. She had to do some investigating.
"Wait a second, we’re accepting the motorcycle as a one-time favor, right? This isn’t going to become a regular thing for us?" Yu Jingting sensed something amiss.
So his father-in-law was using a motorcycle to indenture him and his wife for a lifetime? What a raw deal.
’"Took you a while to notice... you know how frugal our father is. He’s offered us a bike, knowing full well he’s going to need our help more than once. Did you really think because he’s always smiling at us, he’s such a good person? If he wasn’t sly and cunning, he’d have been trampled over long ago, and would be in a worse state than a trampled potato! He even won over my mom, who is as cunning as a thousand-year-old fox. Do you still think he’s just an ordinary man—why are you winking at me, do you have an eye twitch?"
