Chapter 639: Chapter 639: Here, This is For You
"Aunt Liu, who was it that left you in the side room of my mother’s house?" Suizi asked.
"I don’t remember... I fainted, and when I woke up, I was there." Liu Xi had cried for a long time before her emotions finally calmed down.
Her eyes were swollen; they did not appear to have just gotten so in a day.
Suizi recalled her mother-in-law mentioning that Liu Xi had been wearing sunglasses these last few days, suggesting that she had been crying nonstop.
"If you really didn’t see anything, you wouldn’t have stopped me from calling the police."
"I was.... I was thinking about your mother, yes, for her." Liu Xi paused, as if she had found the perfect excuse.
"Your mother is bound to marry Fan Huang sooner or later, right? You should know who Fan Huang is. If something like this happens in his fiance’s house, it would affect his career. I’m thinking of the bigger picture."
Liu Xi assigned all the responsibility to Chen Lijun. It was quite selfish, but it wasn’t entirely unreasonable.
If this matter were to be made public, it would indeed cause some trouble for Fan Huang. He was not allowed to have any scandals associated with him.
"Aunt Liu, I reckon you’re a smart woman, so I won’t beat around the bush. I know who you’re trying to protect. You’re right that making all of this public wouldn’t be good for my parents. But with respect to losses, my family would experience less than yours. At most, my father would be temporarily troubled and once the truth is established, it would all be over. Your daughter, on the other hand, would be ruined."
Liu Xi looked at Suizi, her lips trembling. She seemed somewhat surprised that Suizi had guessed, but she quickly calmed down.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"Why bother arguing with her? We have nothing to hide. We should call the police." Yu Jingting did not want to engage further.
By this point, he had formed his own guess.
The culprit was Fan Lili. Although he could not figure out her motives, anyone who could do this to their own mother must be utterly ruthless.
Yu Jingting was a street urchin. The people he hung out with were gangsters, and he had seen plenty of bad people in his life. But those who would harm their own family were few and far between.
"Jingting is right. We have nothing to fear in calling the police."
Seeing Liu Xi still trying to shield Fan Lili, Suizi motioned for Yu Jingting to make a phone call.
"Don’t go!" Liu Xi roared.
She grabbed a pair of small scissors from the table and held it to her own throat.
The scissors were used by Suizi to cut gauze. They were not large, but they were sharp.
"Don’t push me! If you force me, I’ll die right here, and then you’ll all be implicated!"
"I... shit?" Yu Jingting exploded, "Are you kidding me? My wife saved your life out of kindness and you’re threatening us? Who are you trying to scare? Go ahead and die. Do it now!"
"Jingting, stop talking, go outside and cool down. Don’t cause any more trouble." Suizi pushed Yu Jingting out. As soon as the door opened, a little bundle rolled in.
Luoluo, holding her favorite rubber elephant, ran in gleefully, followed by Wang Cuihua who had brought her.
"Hey, Missy, hurry and get in the bath with Granny!"
Wang Cuihua was preparing to bathe the two gems. Bobo was enjoying his bath, eyes squinted in delight, while Luoluo had escaped in her onesie. Her short legs surprisingly swift.
"Hey~" Luoluo ran up to Liu Xi. Suizi, fearing that she might get hurt, tried to pull her back, but Luoluo was already there.
She lifted the small elephant high and squeezed it in Liu Xi’s direction.
The elephant had a small squeaker in its belly, emitting a sound when squeezed.
"Here, take it~" Luoluo waved the elephant, revealing her little white teeth, four on top, two on the bottom, her dimples visible when she smiled.
Her chubby arms looked like lotus roots, and the small tuft of her hair bobbed as she moved.
"Oh, God!" Seeing Liu Xi hold the scissors to her throat with her precious granddaughter right in front of her, Wang Cuihua was scared out of her wits.
The child moved too quickly. As soon as she entered the room, she dashed towards Liu Xi. None of the adults had been able to stop her. Everyone’s nerves were on edge, fearing that in Liu Xi’s emotional upheaval she might injure Luoluo.
"Trade?" Luoluo was imitating her granny’s usual way of placating her, trying to exchange the small elephant for the scissors.
"My daughter really likes you a lot. This is her favorite elephant, she never lets anyone else touch it. Aunt Liu, when even such a small child can worry about you, can’t you stop harming yourself?"
Suizi spoke with genuine emotion, breaking through Liu Xi’s defenses. Liu Xi relinquished the scissors, crouched down and began to sob, holding Luoluo.
After enduring so many days of torment, the only warmth she encountered came from a child who didn’t even have all her teeth yet.
Suizi removed the scissors, while Wang Cuihua tried to take her granddaughter from Liu Xi. Suizi motioned for her and Yu Jingting to wait outside.
"Don’t cry." Luoluo extended her chubby little hand to wipe Liu Xi’s tears, her babbling coated with a Northeast accent.
Liu Xi was considerably healed by the little girl. After crying for a bit, Liu Xi finally calmed down.
Luoluo sat on her lap, distracted by her beloved little elephant. Every now and then, she would look up, and if there were still tears on Liu Xi’s face, she would reach out and wipe them.
"So you’re Chen Lijun’s daughter... Does that mean this child is—?" Regaining her senses, Liu Xi finally noticed a crucial point.
It turns out that the boy and girl twins she adored were Chen Lijun’s grandchildren!
"You’ve finally noticed?" Suizi poured a cup of tea for her. "Actually, your daughter has known for a long time that we live here. Hasn’t she told you?"
Mentioning Fan Lili made Liu Xi want to cry again. She shook her head, her just-stabilized emotions sinking again.
"You’ve noticed that she’s not like normal people, haven’t you?"
"She doesn’t have a mental illness!" Liu Xi denied quickly.
Her denial only made her seem more guilty.
"If she were just a bit hot-tempered, we could tolerate and let it be. But she’s now attacking you. Who knows what she’ll do next? Aunt Liu, until when can you keep protecting her?"
Suizi got straight to the point.
It was highly likely that Fan Lili had mental issues. Even if she wasn’t a severe psychopath, she would have personality defects. Suizi even suspected Fan Lili was sociopathic. Hoping she would take care of them in their old age was impossible. If she didn’t end up killing them, it would be a miracle — just as what happened today to Liu Xi confirmed.
"She used to kill kittens and puppies when she was younger, and I always thought she was just a child who didn’t understand... I thought she would grow out of it..."
Liu Xi covered her face, not expecting that not only did she not become better as she got older, but she directed her violence towards her own mother.
"Even now, I don’t know why she would treat me like this..." Nearly getting killed by her own daughter was an extremely painful memory for Liu Xi.
She should not have spoken of these things to Suizi, the two of them were at odds. But Luoluo sitting in her lap gave Liu Xi a sense of belonging. She found herself impelled to pour out her heart.
"I can guess her motives, which, for you, might be a bit cruel — Aunt Liu, I have a suggestion for you that could end this painful situation once and for all. What do you say?"
