Chapter 631: Chapter 631: Demoted (with 500+ monthly passes)
"This car accident has been thoroughly investigated. It was simply an accident."
Suizi was taken aback by Fan Huang’s statement that it was simply an accident.
"Accident?" Chen Lijun looked at Yu Jingting. She still had trust in her son-in-law.
"Uh, if my father says it was an accident, then it must be so." Yu Jingting skillfully deflected the topic.
Within these high-stakes situations, it was best to remain neutral.
"Why was the driver from Liu Xi’s side of the family then? It really was an accident? What a coincidence." Chen Lijun remained skeptical.
"Well, it really was a coincidence."
Fan Huang stated this much without mentioning the remittance given by Yu Jingting.
Although Chen Lijun didn’t entirely believe it, she didn’t question further.
Feeling the undercurrent beneath the apparent calm, Yu Jingting excused himself to get back to work in the courtyard.
Suizi cleverly followed him out, leaving her parents alone inside.
In the courtyard, with the sound of the hoe striking the ground, Yu Jingting toiled in sweat. Suizi pretended to wipe his sweat off, but her eyes were drifting towards the window.
It wasn’t until her hand was captured by him that she snapped back to reality, only to find her hand mistakenly stuck up his nose.
"Can’t you pay attention? Are you using me as a tool?" Yu Jingting raised his brow, "How come I never noticed your nosy side before? Do you enjoy prying into the elders’ business?"
"Says the one who used to eavesdrop on our parents at night. You’re the one who influenced me to be this way."
Inside the room, her parents seemed peaceful, indicating that the car accident issue was probably resolved.
"My mom didn’t make a scene. However, I feel like she’ll always hold a grudge about this."
Whenever Chen Lijun changed Fan Huang’s bandages, she would lose her temper, clearly upset. You would think she would care more about the issue of catching the culprit.
Yet, one mention from Fan Huang about the accident being a ’coincidence’, she didn’t question any further. Suizi was a bit confused about her mother’s logic.
"On more substantial issues, Mom knows what she’s dealing with. She only makes a fuss about minor things. For important matters like this, she wouldn’t interfere. She understands your dad more than we do."
Yu Jingting put down the hoe, satisfied with the hole he’d dug. Moments later, he pulled over a lad to plant the tree.
"For trivial things like planting a few trees or moving some pots, she can make a fuss as much as she wants. For substantial things, she would never interfere with Dad’s judgment. Your dad might appear easy-going, but he’s resolute when it comes to certain things, just like you."
Having been in contact with his father-in-law for a while, Yu Jingting started realizing how much his wife took after her father: in speech and in action. Though they seemed easy-going on normal days, they were firm when it came to their bottom line.
"I’ve always wondered how he has yet to realize that. Even your mother has noticed. She’s been saying that the more she looks at you, the more she thinks you resemble him. I feel like she’s on the verge of elucidating him."
Wang Cuihua, being the most obtuse adult in the Yu family, was also starting to notice. Meanwhile, Fan Huang, deep into his role as a stepfather, remained blissfully ignorant.
"Let’s just wait for him to realize it...... I don’t know what my mom is thinking. She might be waiting for him to realize it, just like me."
Suizi couldn’t even fathom how to advise her biological father, who was usually very astute but was surprisingly clueless in this matter.
At first, Suizi was hesitant to remind him. But as he still didn’t realize after so long, she decided to just let it be, treating it as an "Easter egg" waiting for him to discover. Regardless of whether he was her biological father or not, she knew he loved her the same way.
Describing Fan Huang as "still waters run deep" couldn’t be more apt.
He looked calm on the surface, but who knows what he was thinking.
A car accident that almost cost his life was described by him as a "coincidence", but the very next day, Suizi found out that something seemed to be wrong with Liu Xi’s family.
"What’s going on in their back yard? Crying in the middle of the night?" Wang Cuihua, who was clearly sleep-deprived, asked yawning.
Suizi, who had exhausted herself the previous night discussing classical poetry and prose with Yu Jingting, hadn’t heard anything.
"What happened?"
"I don’t know. Someone was crying all night. I asked your dad to check on it and saw that their light was on. I thought maybe Fan Hui died in the hospital."
The last time she had heard such mournful crying was at a funeral.
Wang Cuihua went over early in the morning, thinking that if they had a loss, she would send them some ceremonial money. But she found nothing, noticing instead Liu Xi leaving the house with sunglasses on. She didn’t even greet Wang Cuihua when they crossed paths.
She probably didn’t recognize her.
"It’s strange how people can cry their hearts out in private, and then act like everything is fine during the day. Liu Xi was walking so confidently, like she was on the catwalk." Wang Cuihua said.
"People need to cry when they have nobody wiping their tears... ah..." Suizi found herself sympathizing with Liu Xi.
She remembered her previous life, when she used to cry in the dead of night whenever she faced a problem. But in the daytime, she had to shoulder everything herself. If only there had been a shoulder to lean on, she might not have been so tired.
It was probably her father who put pressure on Liu Xi, driving her to break down and cry.
"She brought this upon herself, why are you feeling sorry? If you have so much spare time and want to cry, I can find you things to do. I guarantee you’ll sob as miserably as her." Such as, in bed?
Suizi kicked him in response and blushed as she resumed eating her porridge.
Yu Jingting hurried her on, so both could head off to school together after the meal.
The university schedule wasn’t packed, after the morning classes, there wasn’t much to do in the afternoon. Usually, Suizi would drag Yu Jingting to study in the library. But today, he had plans to play basketball with a few new friends from his department in the afternoon.
Suizi watched for a while from the sidelines. There were quite a few students spectating, and she heard several girls discussing how cool and great at playing the handsome guy with the number ’10’ was.
It was Suizi who had chosen number ’10’ for Yu Jingting’s jersey. She liked that number because there was a manga she admired where the male protagonist wore the same number.
Now, hearing the whispers of the girls behind her, she started to dislike the number ’10’.
"Does the guy wearing number ’10’ have a girlfriend? He’s always seen with this one girl."
Suizi’s ears perked up, and she mentally nodded in approval, yes! He is taken, you all better stay away."
"That’s probably his twin sister. Both are day students and live nearby. Oh right, don’t you guys remember those adorable little twins who are always feeding the fish by our lake? I’ve seen him pick up the kids a few times. I guess those are his younger siblings. His mother sure knows how to make babies; she gave birth to two pairs of twins!"
Suizi: ???
So, she’d been relegated from his girlfriend to his sister, and even considered a fraternal twin?
Most outrageously, she had been demoted a generation, becoming siblings with her own children. This family structure was getting confusing.
"Why can’t they be brother and sister?" Unable to resist, Suizi turned around to correct the gossiping girls, oblivious to Yu Jingting approaching from behind.
