I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 630: Who Dares to Joke Around

Chapter 630: Chapter 630: Who Dares to Joke Around

What features about my father-in-law... Yu Jingting pondered.

"Cautious, polite, respectful towards everyone -- although I feel his politeness is somewhat contrived."

Fan Huang could likely be the highest-ranking individual the Yu household had ever interacted with.

Contrary to the arrogant nature most people imagined, he was rather low-key.

He was always polite towards the waitstaff at restaurants, even thanking the waiter who poured water for him.

In Yu Jingting’s opinion, even the village chief of the Wang family’s region seemed to show more ostentation than Fan Huang.

"These are the attributes that make him brilliant. As the saying goes, a tall tree will be blown down by strong winds. A protruding bank will be consumed by raging torrents. A man who stands tall among others invites criticism."

"Watch out for the oily, dead skin flakes?"

"A poor person can live simply, whereas a rich person can live ostentatiously. Most people in the world can achieve the first part, but the latter is tricky. Most of the Fan family are born with silver spoons in their mouths, winners right from the starting line. But the few we’ve met and interacted with seem to be stuck in the ’strong’ category. They can’t proceed to become the wise, let alone kings."

Ultimately, they are not content with wealth and always look for opportunities to assert their authority over others.

Fan Huang saw right through this and sought to rectify the family’s ethos, which Suizi saw as a high-minded deed.

"Just say it directly – they got a bit of money and got cocky. Why are you beating around the bush?"

But he did pay attention to what she was saying.

"Didn’t you tell me to be careful? Rest assured, since he trusts us, we won’t let him down."

Suizi was a bit emotional - he did notice, after all.

Fan Huang was not a man who ’thought with his heart’. His position also forbade him from doing so. The very fact he was upfront with Chen Lijun about their relationship meant that he had evaluated everything carefully, particularly the overall qualities of Suizi and Yu Jingting.

Despite Yu Jingting’s delinquent past, Fan Huang chose to trust him, believing that he was still a diamond in the rough.

Fan Huang never mentioned this, but Suizi was deeply moved when she realized it.

"This is why I love being around clever people. The feeling of mutually rushing towards each other is simply wonderful."

"Why would I want to run towards my father-in-law in mutual enthusiasm?" Yu Jingting shivered at her words, "If I were to run towards someone with enthusiasm, I’d choose you. The old man’s charm should only appeal to your mom."

Yu Jingting mischievously reached for their baby’s bottle, curling up his lips.

"Have you been secretly dieting behind my back? You’re getting so skinny!"

Blushing, Suizi covered her ’emaciated’ area and retreated two steps. Someone could never take compliments, reverting to his true self every three sentences.

Fan Huang was hospitalized for three days and insisted on leaving despite the doctor’s orders.

With too much work to do, he had no time to rest.

If it weren’t for Chen Lijun’s insistence, he would have carried on with his work even with his bandaged injury. Under her strict guidance, he could only stay at home and work remotely.

"Jingting, haven’t you eaten? Dig faster!" Chen Lijun with her hands on her waist, commanded her son-in-law to dig the hole.

Yu Jingting, wielding a spade, was laboring hard to dig the pit in Fan Huang’s yard. Upon hearing her words, he paused to wipe away his sweat.

"Mom, even the mules of the production team don’t work as hard as I do. This hole is so large; how can I dig it so quickly?"

Chen Lijun wasn’t one to believe in superstitions, but ever since Fan Huang’s accident, she had been worried.

Wang Cuihua once said that the Feng Shui of the house Fan Huang was living in was not very good and he needed to plant some trees to counter the bad energies. Fan Huang had refused and had subsequently met with the accident.

As a result, Chen Lijun thought it was better to believe than not and asked Yu Jingting to plant some trees. Little did she know that instead of planting small trees, Yu Jingting got some huge persimmon trees, each as thick as a man.

"What’s with all this fuss..." Fan Huang grumbled under his breath, careful not to let Chen Lijun hear him. He could only vent his frustration in Suizi’s presence.

"If planting a few trees could change one’s fate, why do we need to strive at all? Everyone could just plant trees at home and quit working or studying. This kind of thinking is the most unacceptable."

Suizi sat next to him with her book and didn’t even lift her eyelids.

"The trees might not help others, but it will definitely help your situation. If you plant trees, my mom will stop bugging you, and you might find some peace and quiet, allowing you to work more efficiently. But if you don’t plant the trees, can you guess what my mom will do?"

Fan Huang froze, swallowing involuntarily.

"Suizi, could you talk your mom down?"

"No, I won’t. I’m scared too." Suizi openly admitted that she was a common person who feared death.

Yu Jingting went inside for a drink and a rest.

When he squeezed into Suizi’s chair, she generously wiped away his sweat with a towel and even fed him water. Fan Huang felt envious.

How did Chen Lijun bring up such a gentle child? She wasn’t like her at all.

Chen Lijun entered, and Fan Huang instantly got up to pour her a cup of tea. Yu Jingting glanced at Suizi; wife and father-in-law were quite alike, both adept at taking care of people.

"What were you guys whispering about? I saw you two gossiping out in the yard. What’s there so much to talk about?" Chen Lijun asked.

She had to admit she was a bit jealous. Suizi never had much to talk about with her own mother, but when she was with Fan Huang, they always seemed to be chattering about something. They shared a mutual interest and never seemed to run out of topics.

"Dad was badmouthing you. He said you’re leading the charge in superstitious beliefs." Suizi sold out Fan Huang.

Chen Lijun’s eyes were shooting daggers at Fan Huang, but he lowered his gaze, sipping his tea, not daring to meet her eyes. This little Miss Suizi was cunning.

Suizi had asked him for his rare book collection; he refused. She was now getting back at him for it!

"So I’m superstitious for planting a couple of trees? Is there some rule that says I can’t plant trees?!" Chen Lijun pounded the table.

"Mom, why are you yelling? Can’t you see that dad’s arm hurts?" Suizi, having had her fun, now tried to play mediator. Fan Huang furrowed his brows for effect, and Chen Lijun immediately calmed down, coming over to check his arm.

"Did the plaster cast shift?"

Taking advantage of her mother inspecting father’s arm, Suizi winked at Fan Huang. As the saying goes, ’an old ginger is spicier’. Her dad’s acting was enough to pacify her mom.

"What’s the point in arguing with those old ladies? Either way, they’ll bring up their absurd logic. It’s just two trees. It’s not like some sort of black magic. It’ll provide shade in the summer, yield persimmons in the autumn. Hang a swing on it, and whenever you’re free, you can swing with my mom-- Ow!"

Yu Jingting clutched his lower back as Suizi pinched him, her face flushed red.

"Why did you pinch me, you wench?! I was talking about a normal swing, not anything indecent. How many times have I told you not to bring those absurd scenarios from novels into reality? Do you think our parents are the kind to mess around?"

Chen Lijun grabbed a cushion and hurled it at this insolent fellow who joked around with everyone. This bastard’s audacity knew no bounds!

Fan Huang looked at the unplanted trees outside the window. After Yu Jingting’s banter, he found the trees less offensive.

"How’s the investigation on the driver involved in the accident going?" Once she finished examining Fan Huang’s arm, Chen Lijun’s anger flared up again.

Suizi and Yu Jingting exchanged a glance. Yu Jingting had already shared the investigation results with Fan Huang, but neither of the two knew how he planned to handle it.

Fan Huang’s subsequent words greatly surprised the couple.
