Chapter 511: Who is the Accidental and Who is the Normal
Chapter 511: Chapter 511: Who is the Accidental and Who is the Normal
A sharp streak of cold light flew from the slightly open door. Suizi reacted swiftly and pulled Jin Wa out of the way. The object fell to the ground, making a loud clanging sound as it shattered into pieces.
If Suizi hadn’t been so quick, Jin Wa would have been hit by it.
Jin Wa, a boy who was easily intimidated, began to cry in fear at the sight.
Suizi had to comfort the child and avoid the shards on the ground at the same time.
The thrown object was a porcelain vase. Although it had shattered into tiny pieces, Suizi could still see the seal on one of the fragments of the base.
Well, it was actually an antique.
The cost of that quarrel seemed pretty high.
She wondered if she should keep some porcelain pieces with Yu Jingting as antiques should be quite affordable right now, right?
With the child crying and the sounds of the argument in the room, Suizi took a moment to think about her small family finance plan.
Another book came flying towards her, and Suizi caught it instinctively. As she looked at it, she gasped.
It was a bound book!
Flipping through it, she found it was an original edition from the Republic of China era, complete with a serial number. Suizi felt her little claws stretching out.
Such good books were hardly seen in the market now!
In the future, even if you wanted to buy, you might only find them at auction houses and availability was uncertain.
This reminded her that once she got back, she must immediately have someone look into it and see how many out of print books passed down through the generations she could collect.
Given her personality, she might even donate these precious relics to a museum when she got older...
The argument in the room had escalated from the creation of the world to the insult of each other’s parents, and finally evolved into greetings to the other’s organs.
Meanwhile, Suizi’s thoughts had already flown far away, calculating how much money she could allocate each month for her collection.
If the children liked it, it could be a family heirloom. If they didn’t, donating it as a national cultural heritage was better than letting it fall into the wrong hands where people like these could damage them during arguments....
There was a knock at the door, and the quarreling inside the room stopped.
A middle-aged woman who resembled Shen Liangyin slightly came to open the door. It was clear this was a woman who had once been elegant, but now her face was marred by a handprint.
"Who are you looking for?"
"My name is Chen Hansui, I want to see Shen Liangyin."
Suizi guessed this was Shen Liangyin’s mother. From the argument she had just heard, it seemed the woman was quarreling with Mr.Shen over Chang Ling’s affair.
Mr. Shen, whom Suizi had just met a few days ago, clearly knew that Suizi was outside, but he kept silent inside, probably due to his pride.
"She’s not home." After saying this, Shen’s mother tried to slam the door shut.
Suizi swiftly reached out her leg to block it, preventing her from closing the door.
Shen’s mother glared at her coldly.
"You’re trying to break into someone’s home?!"
"I would never do anything illegal. Auntie, tell me about this child’s background, and I will exchange it with some critical information."
"What’s that?" Shen’s mother didn’t get it at first.
Suizi leaned in to her ear and spoke in a volume that only the two of them could hear:
"I know who the father of the child Chang Ling is carrying."
"Who?!" Shen’s mother suddenly grabbed Suizi’s collar.
Suizi touched her hand, using a little force to pry Shen’s mother’s hand off her clothes.
"I’ll meet you at the night school tomorrow afternoon."
Although the school was on vacation, Suizi had the keys and could enter any time.
What Suizi said struck a nerve in Shen’s mother, but she still had some doubts.
"How do I know if what you’re saying is true?"
"Isn’t the fact that I know Chang Ling’s name and am standing here right now enough proof?"
Shen’s mother took a step back, looked Suizi up and down, and then nodded.
"No need to wait for tomorrow, I’ll go with you now."
Suizi felt a slight sinking feeling in her heart, but she still nodded nonchalantly.
"You’ll have to wait a bit while I bring Jin Wa back home."
They agreed to meet at the school in an hour, and Suizi hurried home.
Just as she was reaching the entrance of the alleyway, she ran into Yu Jingting, who was coming back from playing cards.
"What happened?"
" I just lied a little to the Shen Family."
"Oh?"
"At first, I wanted to find Shen Liangyin, but she wasn’t home. I saw her parents arguing, and I had a flash of inspiration to find a breakthrough point through Shen’s mother."
In reality, Suizi had no idea who the father of the child in Chang Ling’s belly was.
She just wanted to know about Jin Wa’s background. She heard Shen’s parents arguing over Chang Ling’s situation, and they mentioned "the child in her belly" a few times during their argument.
Suizi figured she could use this information to get something out of Shen’s mother.
The reason she set the meeting time for tomorrow was to buy some time to either find out more information, or come up with a plausible lie.
She hadn’t expected Shen’s mother to anxiously revise the time to the present, eager to know the truth.
Suizi now found herself in a pickle, panicking over scrambling to make up a believable story.
"Isn’t it simple? Haven’t you ever heard of the saying ’pointing to a deer and calling it a horse’?" said Yu Jingting.
"Pointing to a mule and calling it a horse?"
"It’s the same idea. What I’m saying is, it doesn’t matter who the father of the child that Chang Ling’s carrying is, if you were Shen’s mother, who would you want the child’s father to be?"
"How could I allow my man to have a child with another woman?" Suizi would not entertain such hypothetical scenario.
"I think, our mother and I would nip in the bud any potential wrongdoings. We might even perform humanitarian castration on you before you went whoring around."
Yu Jingting felt a sudden twinge in his groin.
"However, if I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t let the woman have the child, regardless of whose it is. Love can be lost, but the property must belong to my child - ah, I see now."
Suizi was enlightened.
It didn’t matter to her whose child it was, she just had to assert it wasn’t. This was likely also the answer Shen’s mother hoped to hear.
When it comes to a third party’s child, it isn’t only about the breakdown of a love relationship.
When it spills over to the division of family property, both the man and the affair become unimportant. Protecting her child’s interests rises to the paramount priority.
"Well, isn’t that it?" Yu Jingting was in no way surprised by her answer, whereas it was quite unexpected to Suizi.
"Won’t you say something on behalf of all the bad men?" For example, ’nothing more vicious than a woman’s intention’?
"I’m not a bad man. I wouldn’t make the same low-class mistake as Mr. Shen, so why should I speak for him?"
"I’ve read the newly passed Marriage Law and guess what I found? It talks about marriage, but nowhere does it mention ’love’." said Suizi.
"When love falls apart, the court doesn’t care how much you loved. It’s all about settling the accounts and quarreling about the property. If we knew it would end up like this, it would have been better to stay single and childfree to keep peace."
Yu Jingting wanted to pinch her chubby little face.
"These are just a few special cases. Are they worth generalising to all marriages? Aren’t we doing great?"
Suizi looked at him, but she couldn’t help but sigh, thinking perhaps Shen’s parent’s marriage was the norm. Their way of living together, she and Yu Jingting’s, might be the special one among all marriages... right?
"Apart from that, I’m more concerned about what you’re holding. What is it?" Yu Jingting pointed at Suizi’s hand.
Suizi raised her hand. Huh?!
