Chapter 359: Chapter 359: The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons is Really Scary
It was only quite some time later when Fan Huang received the registered letter.
Upon receipt, spotting another piece of paper inside, he unrolled it to find Suizi’s distinct, legible script before his eyes.
Fan Huang held the piece of paper, staring at it for a full five minutes.
During these long five minutes, it seemed as if he had turned into a stone statue, his body completely unmoving, only subtle changes in his facial expression betraying any sense of his feelings.
From anger to raised eyebrows and then to laughter, ever shifting.
"This lass..." Fan Huang chuckled and shook his head.
A child drenched in poetry and literature, their tantrums even carry an irresistible scent of ink, quite lovely indeed.
The children Lijun raised in the countryside, whether in virtue or in knowledge, far surpass several young people in the family who are the same age as Suizi.
Such a rich array of expressions teased the curiosity of Meng Jun, who was waiting for Fan Huang’s signature.
Sneaking a peek, he inwardly marveled.
Such exquisite penmanship.
The writing mirrors the writer; Suizi’s writing is peculiarly clean yet her strokes are energetic, much like the impression she leaves on people.
At first glance, it appears soft, yet its core radiates a defiant spirit.
Remembering times before when praising Suizi always received his leaders’ approval, Meng Jun figured today should be no exception.
So he began showering Fan Huang with detailed praise about the quality of Suizi’s calligraphy.
Fearing he might fall on the wrong end of some cryptic reference, he played safe by not going into the substance of the poetry.
Instead, he carefully complimented the quality of her calligraphy.
But upon finishing the compliments, he began to feel the chilly wind blow through the office.
Fan Huang was staring at him coldly.
"Have you finished organising the meeting notes?"
Meng Jun: ....
Just where did he step on a landmine to have the boss suddenly so riled up?
It definitely couldn’t be the handwriting, then it must have been the substance.
Not being familiar with this poem, Meng Jun secretly flipped through a book of Tang Poetry, and after finishing, broke into a cold sweat.
Good heavens, was Miss Suizi...directly calling their leader a big animal?!
Moreover, the insult was so artistic that those without culture wouldn’t understand it; and those who did understand, couldn’t explode in anger. In a word, brilliant!
Though Suizi had refused Fan Huang’s furniture, the days at the Yu Family residence had to carry on.
Yu Jingting planned to custom order a set of furnishings. Chen Lijun managed to get some pear wood, which greatly comforted Wang Cuihua’s heartache over losing the chance of free furniture.
Whether this batch of timber was actually organized by Chen Lijun or someone else, it was not clear.
Suizi did not bother to inquire.
She had already expressed her position; wanting to bypass her mother to win her over? That would be physically impossible.
The timber was of excellent quality; so as not to waste it, Suizi borrowed a book on furniture design from the library to draft up design patterns as per the book.
Yu Jingting had gone through great lengths to find an old carpenter with many years of experience, even giving a hefty artisan fee, the issue of the furniture was finally settled.
The house was done, and the two kiddos were nearing their hundredth day.
According to the old custom of their hometown, when the kiddos reach three months old, they can be taken outside the house and relatives should be invited over for a meal.
Then the issues arose one after the other: they had offended almost all the relatives at the Yu Family side, and best not mention the relatives from the Chen family side.
Colleagues from Suizi’s and Jingting’s workplace could be invited over. But being young civil servants, inviting people over could be misconstrued as veiled bribery.
Suizi’s workplace was okay, the salary was released every month without fail. But the beer factory that Jingting had just transferred to had not paid wages for a couple of months now, the workers were all broke. If they hosted a banquet, they would be scolded to death.
After some discussion, the young couple concluded they should just have a meal with their immediate family.
Wang Cuihua, troubled, took advantage of a moment when Suizi and her husband weren’t paying attention, and took out Yu Shuisheng’s sketch, wiping her tears surreptitiously.
"You old ghost, are you dead or alive? We already have grandchildren, aren’t you unlucky not to see them even once..."
Suizi, having just woken up for a bathroom break, heard this and mistook her mother-in-law for missing her father-in-law, feeling upset.
She decided she must discuss this with Jingting tomorrow, because having the baby had disrupted the search for their father, they should now be able to resume.
As Suizi went to the bathroom, she missed the second half of Wang Cuihua’s mutterings.
"Seeing such good-looking grandkids and not being able to show them off, it feels like I’m a hen holding an egg that can’t be laid..."
Not being able to show off how well-behaved the children were, such a pity!
The key point here is to show off, then comes the missing.
The picture of Shuisheng silently stared back, the same way it had been for many years during Wang Cuihua’s lonely life.
Suizi and Jingting discussed it and decided that they should keep publishing the missing person search. Once the kids could be weaned, the couple could go and resume the search again.
But Suizi, unbeknownst to her, there’s a saying that goes "nothing is as reliable as change".
Although the couple, Suizi and Jingting, didn’t want to make a fuss over the twin’s hundred-day celebration, there are ones who kept an eye out for it.
One early morning when Suizi was leaving for work, she was startled by the forceful arrangements outside her house.
She almost turned tail and raced back inside.
Standing outside the courtyard were Uncle Yu and his wife, Second Uncle Yu and his wife, and...Chen Kaide and Fenfang
This was no less terrifying than a Hundred Ghosts Parade!!
Suizi almost assumed she was seeing things.
All these relatives she had offended over the years had unexpectedly shown up all together!
"Wife, Mom asked for you to take a pear to snack on at the-office- FML!"
Jingting came out to hand Suizi a pear and upon seeing the crowd outside, he was shocked enough to drop the fruit which rolled on the ground a couple times.
"Mom, I’m going to school- Oh my Gosh! They’re charging in!" Jiaojiao bounced out the door with her backpack, and upon seeing the people outside, she bounced right back in.
Get ready for a fight, it’s time for combat!
All those people outside had been offended by the Yu Family in the past, and them suddenly appearing all at once, it’s hard not to think that they are ganging up to cause a ruckus.
Jingting’s gaze fell on the shovel inside the courtyard, considering who he should take down first if things got physical.
"Tiegen, why won’t you open the door for us?" Wang Fenfang called enthusiastically from outside the door.
To someone who didn’t know, they might have assumed that their relationship was all peachy creamy.
"What are you guys here for?" Jingting asked without much politeness. His question was filled with a sense of conflict that was coming.
"We figured the twins had their hundred-day celebration, so we came to join in," Kaide offered.
"Twins...?" Suizi arched an eyebrow.
In northern dialect, ’twins’ refers to twin girls.
"Hey, why are you two trying to keep it from us? We’ve all heard that you gave birth to twin girls. Although it’s a bit of a pity that they won’t be able to carry on the family lineage, the both of you are working and can’t have more children--"
Jingting quickly picked up the shovel, figured it might as well just get into a brawl, too lazy to listen to these people spouting nonsense.
"So...you guys came to ’congratulate’ me on having a daughter, and came here to mock?" Suizi was also a bit confused about the situation.
If they really came to laugh at her "misfortune", there’s no need for so many people to show up, right?
And they even brought stuff with them, some (almost expired) rice cakes, (who knows how long they’ve been) eggs, she even saw Chen Kaide bringing a large cabbage.
The aunty nudged Fenfang, indicating her to pipe down.
Putting on a smile, she turned to Suizi warmly and said:
"Your kids are celebrating their hundred-day milestone; we thought it would be a good opportunity to mend fences. We’re all relatives; there’s no need to hold a grudge."
