Chapter 209: Chapter 209: Venturing into the Dragon’s Den and Tiger’s Cave
The dinner table is the best place to gauge the relationships within a family.
When Suizi was at her parents’ house, her parents each held dominion over one side of the table and never communicated.
She was also raised not to talk while eating, but the Yu Family was different.
The family members chirped and chattered, each sharing something interesting that happened during the day.
"I start working at the Tobacco Company tomorrow."
"Ahem——" Wang Cuihua choked, "What?! Why would you go to such a dilapidated place?"
"Mom, is the Tobacco Company dirty? Is it dirtier than my brother carrying cement?" Jiaojiao asked.
"It’s not the place that’s dirty, it’s the people there whose hearts are rotten through. When the upper beam is not straight, the lower ones will go aslant. Even the Workshop Director could come up with a shady idea of borrowing life from his son. It’s obvious that the morality there is very poor," Cuihua spoke, feeling ten thousand indigestions in her heart when thinking about the place where her son was heading.
Suizi was also a bit surprised. She only asked Yu Jingting to go see Fan Hua alone, but she didn’t expect him to actually dive into the "tiger’s den".
"What about our cargo business if you go to the Tobacco Company? You still have to return to the village to help with the spring plowing when spring comes," Suizi said.
"I’m only going to hold a nominal post there. They will write an introduction letter for me to get a driving license. After that, I’ll hold a nominal post in their transport team. Before I get the driving license, I can do whatever I want."
Getting a driver’s license in those days was not easy; there were no driving schools, and everyone had to learn from the old masters which definitely took one or two years, possibly longer.
This was equivalent to paying Yu Jingting for two years without any work.
And it didn’t interfere with his small business which was thriving.
It seemed like a huge stuffed pancake had fallen from the sky; he didn’t have to go to work every day, yet he could still draw a monthly salary for a real job.
In a factory with a thousand workers, it wasn’t very difficult to squeeze in a few people to draw unearned salaries.
Yet, Suizi felt that it wasn’t as simple as that.
Fan Hua was beaten by him before, and the two already had a vendetta. Would he be so generous as to give such a huge favor to Yu Jingting?
"Suizi, do you think he could learn bad things there?" Wang Cuihua thought this was a good thing, but she was worried her son would learn some crooked tricks.
Suizi thought to herself, it would be good enough if your son does not wreak havoc in their company. He is already the worst there is, what more is there to learn?
"That won’t happen. There are so many people in the factory, only a few are degenerates, he won’t meet them."
When Wang Cuihua heard Suizi say this, she finally felt reassured and her worry turned into joy.
"That’s good. What’s a driving license?" Wang Cuihua asked.
"You can only drive with a license. Technically speaking, Jingting driving the tractor is not in compliance with the regulations."
All cars now are public property; private cars are not allowed and purchasing tractors for farmers is also not allowed. However, now that the Production Team has been dismissed, no one cares to enforce the laws.
"It sounds like a good thing, but why would they suddenly be so nice to you? Did you help them do something terrible, son?" Wang Cuihua asked.
"What could I do? I’m such a nice guy, right, wife?" Yu Jingting pitched the ball to Suizi.
Suizi blinked her eyes, thinking: yes, you are just too good, stuffing a handkerchief you used to blow your nose into someone’s mouth.
"You can go to work, but it’s not normal for them to offer you this kind of unfair benefit for no reason. If you find out they’re getting you to do something bad, you have to come back immediately and quit. Understand?" Wang Cuihua warned.
Suizi greatly admired her mother-in-law, who always seemed to be able to grasp the most basic principles of human morality. Suizi took this opportunity to teach Jiaojiao.
"What mom means is, all the gifts of fate have been marked with a price in the dark. This quote is from ’The Beheaded Queen.’ Use it in your composition this week."
Jiaojiao was speechless. Her mother often took opportunities to lecture her brother, but how did her sister-in-law manage to interpret it into such a sophisticated saying?
However, under Suizi’s opportunistic teaching, Jiaojiao’s composition was always the best in her grade, sprinkled with ancient anecdotes that even the teacher might not have heard before.
After dinner, Suizi pulled Yu Jingting into the room for a private conversation.
As soon as the door was closed, she crossed her arms and waited for him to confess without any prompting.
"I didn’t do anything shady!" Yu Jingting was well-acquainted with her expression.
From his past experiences, he knew that if he didn’t explain things clearly, Suizi would definitely not let him get into bed.
So before she drilled him, he took the initiative to explain everything.
Suizi had him proactively approach Fan Hua, which was a risky move.
If they didn’t take any action, Fan Hua would probably go to any lengths to cause trouble.
He was well-entrenched locally, with connections and resources that easily overshadowed Suizi’s.
Especially between the Fan Family and Chen Lijun, there might be some grudges.
Under these circumstances, Suizi chose to take the initiative, to stir up trouble by sending Yu Jingting over there.
She claimed that the Workshop Director took the initiative to summon Fan Hua. No matter what the Workshop Director said to Fan Hua afterwards, Fan Hua wouldn’t believe it.
She then let Yu Jingting ask Fan Hua for some hush money, to put on a greedy facade.
Yu Jingting had been in a fight before, so Fan Hua probably already saw him as a reckless street ruffian.
Showing up at his door asking for hush money probably met Fan Hua’s expectations of Jingting.
The reason why it was a risky move was that if Fan Hua had a clear conscience and was righteous, he could easily call the police on Yu Jingting, and it would be game over.
But Suizi was certain he wouldn’t do that. Most likely, he would pay to settle the matter. They didn’t lack the money, and the reason they had Yu Jingting asked for it was to prevent Fan Hua from seeking revenge in the future.
Only with a clear price would Fan Hua believe that she and Yu Jingting had no backing and were merely greedy commoners. Without asking for anything, he would always have to ponder about it.
According to Suizi’s plan, Fan Hua’s attention should be diverted to the Workshop Director, and he’d seek revenge on him. These two people would then fight each other.
"He has no one left now. He thinks I’m a good tool to use, so he’s trying to win me over with small favors," Yu Jingting briefly reported what he’d heard to Suizi.
Fan Hua was sent here after causing trouble in Beijing. As soon as he took charge, none of the old hands at the factory respected him.
Usually, the head of a large factory would appoint a third-in-command to consolidate their position, together dealing with the second-in-command and creating a balance.
However, Fan Hua was truly a talent. As soon as he took over, he targeted the third-in-command, causing the second and third-in-command to join forces against him.
He struggled in the factory and his life was full of difficulties.
Looking at how he approached the idiotic Workshop Director, Yu Jingting could tell that Fan Hua indeed lacked trustworthy confidants.
Yu Jingting approached at this particular time, and Fan Hua felt Yu Jingting was of use to him, so he kept him.
Fan Hua thought that he had recruited a strong warrior, but it turned out that he had invited a wolf into his house.
Suizi bit her lip. This Fan Hua... was more of a dunce than she had imagined.
"Such a clueless person, born into a family like this, it’s not easy for him to have survived until now." She even felt a bit of pity for Fan Hua.
"He’s somewhat stupid, but he’s not completely stupid." Yu Jingting lowered his head and gave Suizi a kiss, there was more to his words.
What he did not mention was that Fan Hua allowing him the nominal post had something to do with his mother-in-law as well.
