Chapter 1019: Chapter 1019 You Can Always Trust Brother Ting
"Wife, do you think what we’re doing is appropriate?" Yu Jingting sat on the tricycle, asking with his lips, but he was secretly delighted.
His wife was just too adorable.
"Find a place where no one’s around to take him down." Suizi stared intently at the tricycle ahead, on which Zhang Zheng and his lackey were sitting.
All along the way, she had been listening to Zhang Zheng badmouth her man, and that was enough.
"Since when have you become so unrestrained?" Yu Jingting kept up the act of a good family man and just couldn’t stop.
Although he wanted to deal with Zhang Zheng more than anyone, in front of Suizi, he deliberately said the opposite to see her genuine reaction.
"Restrained or not, the outcome is the same. He knows too much about our family, and if he leaks it to the Zhang Family, our father’s and the old master’s plan will be exposed prematurely."
"So, putting a sack over his head and giving him a beating will stop him from spilling secrets?" Yu Jingting raised an eyebrow.
Suizi responded with a grin that lacked any warmth.
"Of course not, but I can vent my anger."
The fourth master and the old master had been planning for so long and had already gained an advantageous position overall. The Zhang Family had already signed a contract with the fourth master’s Jade Factory, and even if they now realized it was a trap, trying to pull out would cost the Zhang Family dearly, both financially and otherwise.
However, withdrawing now would mean less loss, not reaching the effect the fourth master expected.
Suizi, acting as the knowledgeable military adviser overseeing the situation, knew their position was compromised by Zhang Zheng, hence she thought why not go all out and give him a good beating with a sack to relieve some frustration.
"I’ve noticed that ever since you left Beijing, you’ve been freeing yourself like breaking a seal—becoming a lawless rogue?"
Suizi glared at him.
"When did you become so talkative? Just say whether you’re in or not!"
Yu Jingting silently pulled an empty silk bag from the blue-and-white silk pouch, don’t ask why he would bring such a thing when going out.
"How could I not listen to the mistress’s orders?"
The coachman was a local who didn’t understand Mandarin very well. Since Suizi and her husband got on the carriage, he had been looking back frequently.
He seemed to want to say something.
Suizi thought he was worried about not being able to pay the fare because of her shabby clothes, so she took out a coin from her pocket and handed it to him.
The coachman waved his hand, speaking rapidly in the local dialect.
Suizi could barely understand a bit, it seemed he was saying it was fine to pay upon arrival.
But after that, he added something else that Suizi didn’t understand.
The coachman had spoken very softly, and he had used words created within the local dialect.
Suizi asked again, and this time the coachman raised his voice slightly.
"It seems he’s saying we shouldn’t go any further." Having been here a few times, Yu Jingting understood a bit, recalling his father had used similar words when there was danger.
Suizi frowned—the tricycle carrying Zhang Zheng was just ahead, now turning onto a narrow path, where the high vegetation on both sides concealed their figures.
This stretch of road looked very isolated; having walked for a while, except for Zhang Zheng’s tricycle, there were only Suizi and her husband, no one else.
Suizi hesitated for a moment, her anger having subsided and her rationality returning.
It was now seven-thirty in the evening, the sun had set long ago, and it was pitch-dark. It was quite unsafe on paths off the beaten track.
Just as she was about to tell the coachman to turn around, a scream from Zhang Zheng came from ahead.
"Ah!!!"
"What do you guys want to do!" Zhang Zheng’s lackey trembled.
"Hand over all the money you’ve got on you!"
Suizi and Yu Jingting exchanged a glance—it looked like something had happened.
"Turn around." Suizi made a quick decision.
Encountering fierce bandits, her primary thought was to protect her own people.
Yu Jingting listened for a moment and shook his head.
"They have guns and motorcycles; we can’t get away."
Gunshots and engine noises were coming from ahead.
The coachman was so frightened his face went pale and he rapidly insisted Suizi and her husband get off the carriage.
Yu Jingting, unusually, didn’t lose his temper with the rickshaw puller and helped Suizi down from the vehicle.
The rickshaw puller, relieved of his burden, pedaled away at full speed on the tricycle.
"There’s someone over there!" the bandit heard the sound of the tricycle.
Yu Jingting led Suizi into the bushes, no longer caring about cleanliness, made her lie down, covered her with weeds, and after disguising Suizi, he chose to stay by her side, pulling out a fruit knife from his pocket and stared sharply ahead.
Suizi was right under his watch, and should those men dare to approach, he was ready to risk his life.
Suizi’s heart was pounding fiercely, as if it would leap out of her throat.
In the face of danger, Yu Jingting’s protection was all-encompassing and without blind spots; how could Suizi not be aware?
If it weren’t for her presence, given his temperament, he would most likely have rushed out to take on those men.
He had never feared anything; it was she who pulled him down from the chaotic ceiling of street life to the ordinary world.
However, Suizi’s guilt flashed by, and she thought that kind of "ceiling," sustained by fighting and bravado, was better left behind.
Being a law-abiding citizen and living a steady life on earth was also good.
If he really encountered danger and rushed out to fight, she would be truly devastated.
The sound of the motorcycle roared over their heads, and to Suizi, it felt as if it were grazing her scalp.
"Ah!" The rickshaw puller’s scream echoed.
As Yu Jingting had assessed, how could a human-powered tricycle possibly outrun a motorcycle?
Being caught was quite normal.
Suizi, fearing the rickshaw puller would betray them, pricked up her ears to listen, and so did Yu Jingting.
After a couple of sentences, Yu Jingting cursed under his breath.
The rickshaw puller had revealed there was someone else aboard.
The motorcycle circled back, seemingly intent on leaving no survivors.
Yu Jingting licked his back teeth with the tip of his tongue and handed the fruit knife to Suizi.
"No matter what you hear, do not come out."
"What are you going to do?!" Suizi whispered in alarm, trying to grab him, only to see him leap out of the bushes and run towards the front.
"He’s over there! Chase him!"
He used himself to lure away those villains!
Suizi’s tears gushed out in desperation as her hand shook while holding the fruit knife, and she wanted to stand up and run with him.
But she knew she could not do that.
Yu Jingting ran out so that she could live; if she revealed herself then, not only would his plan fall through, but she would also become a burden to him, endangering him further.
Desperate, Suizi could only listen to the motorcycles whizz past, following Yu Jingting.
Fortunately, no gunshots were heard; whether the men ran out of bullets was unknown.
"The Zhang Family’s men are here!" Suizi yelled at the top of her lungs, "The Zhang Family will not let you go!"
Since they were close to the Zhang Family’s territory, Suizi’s instinct told her that shouting this would be more effective than anything else.
And indeed, her cries were effective; the motorcycle came to a stop.
The two riders conferred with each other.
"Was there a woman shouting behind us?"
"Sounded like she mentioned the Zhang Family?"
"Shall we bail? The guy ahead looks ragged, like a beggar; let’s not chase him. But that woman’s voice, listening to it, is kind of sweet..."
Yu Jingting was only a few meters away from the motorcycle when they were distracted by Suizi’s yelling. He stopped, scooped up a handful of sand, and threw it at them.
The two men felt a painful sting in their eyes and, before they could react, Yu Jingting swept a long leg across.
Clang!
The motorcycle crashed to the ground.
