I Am Also An Extraordinary Creature

Chapter 81: Chapter 79: Half the People Gone_1

"Our only goal is that box. Just leave the box behind, and there will be no conflict between us!" shouted the Tracker who came to negotiate.

"I want a horse, and I will hand over that thing to you when I get near Dusk Cathedral!" Zheng Yichen responded loudly. Thinking that he could walk away unscathed by giving up the item? Such wishful thinking. He had already killed many of their people; as long as the leader of these Trackers wanted to keep his team,

it was impossible to truly act as if nothing had happened.

"We don’t have a horse right now, but we can arrange for one to be delivered in the shortest time possible,"

"Then I’ll wait for you during that time." Having said that, Zheng Yichen started walking toward Dusk Cathedral. From the looks of the negotiation just now, it seemed that Dusk Cathedral wasn’t really connected to these people.

The content of Zheng Yichen and the Tracker’s negotiation was quickly reported to their leader.

"Give him the horse," the leader of the Trackers pondered for a moment before saying; "After he’s on horseback, he won’t be able to slip into those woods!"

The horse was delivered that evening. The Tracker who had negotiated with Zheng Yichen said, "We’re not far from Dusk Cathedral now."

"I know," Zheng Yichen replied as he looked at the horse and nodded. He definitely wouldn’t hand over the item. He just wanted to further test the attitude of these Trackers and also get some rest along the way. Well, that was pointless; these Trackers were still trying to make a move on him when the horse arrived.

But his readiness to fight to the bitter end made the Trackers more wary. They seemed very amenable, and that was the reason why. Trust them?

Trust a bunch of people who are out to kill and plunder?

Travel on horseback, take a good rest, and then think about the rest.

People can be malicious. Not long after riding, Zheng Yichen heard the sound of approaching hooves. He clicked his tongue; he had no expectations that these Trackers were really planning on a peaceful interaction. Their patience seemed even worse than he had thought... or perhaps...

The horse was a problem!

After several days without proper rest, Zheng Yichen was extremely irritable. Fortunately, he was not the same as before; his thinking was not muddled by this, but it meant he would be even more ruthless when dealing with enemies.

Whether the horse had a problem or not, he had no intention of taking a chance. He immediately headed for more complex terrain. If the horse really had an issue, it meant he would have a group of Trackers on horseback chasing him, and he wouldn’t be able to fight back unless he could run faster than a horse.

If the horse had no issue, at most he had given up some convenience for more secure safety.

This didn’t require thought. He had already suffered so much; enduring a couple more days was nothing.

The horse that started sprinting didn’t even last five minutes before it began to falter, foaming at the mouth, slowing down, and then its front legs buckled, sending it crashing to the ground. Zheng Yichen took the opportunity to roll on the ground to break his fall and, without looking back, rushed toward the complex terrain ahead.

In that kind of area, the enemy would have trouble pursuing on horseback, and Crossbow Arrows would be difficult to aim. As for the fire gun... after firing one shot, it took a long time to reload before the second shot could be fired.

Even so, by the time Zheng Yichen reached the complex terrain, the Trackers had closed in to a dangerous proximity. Dangerous Crossbow Arrows flew towards him, some of which he deflected until he hid behind a rock and aimed his hand cannon at the pursuers.

The explosion of a small grenade momentarily disrupted the horses and the blast caused the Trackers to hesitate briefly. They hadn’t expected Zheng Yichen to have such a weapon, but the Trackers quickly resumed their pursuit.

The chase was on again. Zheng Yichen had no intention of destroying the Subduing Item, and the Trackers also confirmed that Zheng Yichen wasn’t set on a suicidal fight.

"When I have time, I really need to learn how to throw properly..." Zheng Yichen glanced back at the Trackers. He wanted to learn so much. A few months’ time was enough to make up for the shortfall in regular combat, but throwing wasn’t part of what he made up for.

He also confirmed something else - these Trackers had no connection to Dusk Cathedral, at least not openly. That was good news. He didn’t have to worry too much about approaching Dusk Cathedral anymore. As for ambushes... by now, he was somewhat capable of thermal vision.

Using it for too long made his eyes hurt like staying up late, but in crucial moments, it allowed him to avoid a lot of ambushes.

"Damn it! Is this guy even human??" Watching Zheng Yichen still running resiliently, a Tracker nearly lost his mind. It’s been almost a week, and this guy had no chance to rest properly during this time. How was he still able to run so fast!?

As Zheng Yichen got closer to Dusk Cathedral, they lost their initial ’hunting’ mentality.

Their employer’s requirement was to obtain the Subduing Item before several Hunter-Demons arrived at Dusk Cathedral. Zheng Yichen had taken a wrong turn before, so they could afford to play a game of cat and mouse with Zheng Yichen leisurely, despite some setbacks, as there was no great time pressure.

But now it was different.

In the woods.

Zheng Yichen looked at the rabbit skewered on the Sword of Hell, spat, and settled for eating the rabbit roasted by Hellfire.

He had barely taken two bites of the slightly burnt rabbit when several rotting hands emerged from the ground. Zheng Yichen casually kicked them off; they were just zombies, nothing to fuss over. Subduing Items naturally attracted extraordinary creatures. This wasn’t a danger zone, so there wouldn’t be many extraordinary creatures, but that didn’t mean there were none.

However, he had checked the item several times on the road, and it seemed to exert no particular attraction on him. Maybe because of differing attributes?

Zheng Yichen even suspected whether the item contained a few books, things like dark tomes or necromancy manuals.

Or maybe something like the Skull Of Gul’dan...cough, that would be too far-fetched.

After taking down the rabbit from the Sword of Hell, Zheng Yichen intended to use the sword to deal with the zombies crawling up from the ground. But thinking about possibly needing to roast meat just as quickly after, and not wanting to waste water to clean the weapon -- after all, having chopped zombies, that rotten smell wouldn’t go away without a good scrub with a steel wool pad, and it would feel bad to keep using it.

He finished off the zombies with branches picked up from the ground. The zombies were not strong, their bones rotten, so a sturdy branch was more than enough.

After eating, Zheng Yichen surveyed his surroundings. The Trackers, persistent as ever, had surrounded him in no time. He quickly left the area. He had retaliated many times, but each time the enemy had coordinated too well, giving him no chance.

However, he noticed that as he neared the Dusk Cathedral, these people began to get more aggressive. Perhaps a suitable opportunity would present itself.

With that thought, Zheng Yichen tossed away the rabbit head and picked up his pace. He had managed to keep going these days thanks, in no small part, to preying on a great number of small animals. The ones he captured were first drained of blood, then roasted and eaten.

There was no waste; he utilized food to the utmost, demonstrating such stamina that even he found it unbelievable.

Seeing Zheng Yichen accelerate, the Trackers sped up as well. They weren’t as fast as Zheng Yichen, plus they did not have his thermal vision. Tracking wasn’t x-ray vision; as long as he put some distance between them for a while, he could make additional preparations.

Thinking about traps was out of the question; his trap-setting skills were far too crude. In front of that group, it was like child’s play. He was also grateful that this era had no smartphones. Otherwise, they could easily take a detour and intercept him. For now, as long as he was fast enough, there was no chance of them catching him from both sides.

"Has this guy gone mad?" A Tracker panted, looking at the trace left in front of him. Zheng Yichen had been running at high speed for over two hours. In the past, they would have been glad to do so, just biting on his trail until they found him, but now the situation was different.

If they let Zheng Yichen keep running like this, they wouldn’t lose him, but if it dragged on too long, it would be too late to catch up to him.

They didn’t know what awaited at the Dusk Cathedral, but the employer’s order was clear: if Zheng Yichen reached the Dusk Cathedral, it wasn’t considered their failure but making their job much harder after that...

"We can’t keep chasing like this. Divide some to intercept him on the way to the Dusk Cathedral!"

The Trackers couldn’t endure it any longer. They didn’t want to split up; Zheng Yichen was too dangerous. With the current numbers, they managed to encircle and potentially kill him. But with fewer numbers, the situation would change. Yet, now they had no choice; the enemy’s endurance was too strong.

"Huff...huff...I won’t forgive myself if I don’t kill you guys for all the suffering I’ve endured!" Zheng Yichen leaned against a tree, panting. His physique was excellent, but even he was starting to struggle after running continuously for long without proper rest. With insufficient rest, his recovery rate was slowing down. He touched his face and even noticed pimples had formed.

This was something he hadn’t experienced in many years.

After running for a while longer, Zheng Yichen started climbing a tree and moved through the canopy, swinging back in the same way a gorilla would, thinking of ambushing the group of Trackers. He had thought about this tactic before, but at that time, the Trackers weren’t in a rush, so he wasn’t too confident.

But now that the Trackers were getting anxious, he decided to give it a try. If the ambush succeeded, he was certain he could take out a group of them in the first wave.

The hand cannon wasn’t very powerful, but he had the Sword of Hell. Just a small expenditure of Life Force could ignite Hellfire, and with more consumption, perhaps he could recreate the attack that the Headless Knight used to ignite the ground. Even if the range was only half, it would still take out quite a few.

As for danger...darn it, Zheng Yichen just wanted those people dead, having long since been worn down by the lack of rest.

A group of Trackers arrived as expected.

"Huh? So many fewer?" Zheng Yichen, puzzled after noticing through his limited thermal vision that the number of Trackers had significantly decreased, thought his plan had been seen through. But after waiting a bit and seeing that a part of the Trackers really was missing, he fell into brief contemplation.

What’s going on?

As the Trackers entered his attack range, his contemplation turned to malice.

No more thinking; time to hit them with everything he’s got!
