Chapter 66: Chapter 64: One Wants Money, the Other Wants Honor_1
The remaining vampires were still frenzied, but without the advantage in numbers, they were quickly dealt with. Zheng Yichen looked at the bandages on his body, took a deep breath, and noted that frenzied vampires, though not as dangerous as hunters, had their strength and speed further increased by their madness.
The overwhelming danger was still significant. The scratches on his body and the wounds on his arms swelled up immediately, and the bite marks were excruciatingly painful.
His condition was not good, and neither were the other Hunter-Demons; each one of them was seriously injured.
"Damn it! I had planned to use the demon-tempting blood after reducing the number of vampires a bit," Raymond spat vehemently as he looked at the vampire corpses scattered around. The critically injured Hunter-Demon had been killed earlier when the vampires went berserk and attacked.
There was no helping it; under such circumstances, they couldn’t stop the attack nor save their comrade.
"Let’s collect the loot first; we also need to treat our wounds, or someone else might die," John said, looking at the damaged marks on his two swords from clashing with the vampires’ sharp claws. His injuries were fewer than Zheng Yichen’s.
But because the wounds would not stop bleeding, the blood-soaked appearance made him look quite fierce.
"I got bitten, is that going to be a problem?" Zheng Yichen inquired, looking at the wound on his arm. If it was serious, he wouldn’t hide anything; he would simply reveal his identity as an Extraordinary Being and drain all the nearby vampire corpses to see if he could recover.
From this perspective, he was more vampiric than the vampires, at least handsomer than them.
"A vampire bite is more prone to infection, and people who die of infection turn into zombies. You’d better treat it quickly," Raymond said, glancing at Zheng Yichen’s arm. "Use the vampire’s brain marrow."
"...How disgusting!" Zheng Yichen immediately showed a look of disgust, but as he said this, he had already swiftly opened up a vampire’s skull with his sword. Looking at the blackened brain marrow inside, he wondered if this stuff was really usable.
It was usable...
Not only was Zheng Yichen doing this, but John and the others were as well. They applied the vampire’s brain marrow to their wounds, which slowed the bleeding and reduced the swelling significantly, appearing to be even more effective than the medicinal pill they had used before.
"That works?"
Zheng Yichen looked at the brain marrow applied to his arm in amazement. Although the color was disgusting, the effect was indeed significant.
"Of course, vampire teeth and claws are very valuable. There are specific people who buy these things," John stated.
"Like a witch?" Zheng Yichen was surprised that someone would buy such things.
"Certainly not. Some assassin organizations like to buy these. Weapons made from this material cause unstoppable bleeding," Raymond explained, shaking his head.
"...Oh." Zheng Yichen knocked out all the teeth from a vampire. He had thought that weapons made with vampire teeth might carry a bloodsucking effect—like those that restore health upon cutting someone. He didn’t neglect the claws either, chopping them all off one by one.
The wounds from being scratched by these were as painful as he was thorough in extracting them. The vampires had just died and processing the bodies inevitably turned the scene bloody. He also took the opportunity to suck some vampire blood.
Being an Extraordinary Being himself, he was not so averse to this behavior, as the blood he absorbed was directly converted into a more suitable form of reactionary power through his extraordinary abilities.
"We should burn all these bodies at the end, otherwise, if some wild beasts ate them, those beasts would turn into the living dead too," Raymond said, lifting the blood-dripping cloth bag in his hand, which served as their evidence of the vampire hunt.
No one would deny the validity of these items, or his fists would have the disbelievers re-evaluate their position.
The bodies of the dead Hunter-Demons also needed to be brought back.
They had been in a hurry when they set out, but on the way back, Zheng Yichen rode a horse alone. There was no need to hurry back, taking it at a normal pace, and besides, sharing a horse with the masters... was somewhat uncomfortable, whether sitting in front or behind.
Unless one was lying down on the horse.
"...A commission from the church??" Once back in town, they headed to the place to deliver the commission, and Zheng Yichen looked around in some astonishment.
"To deal with so many vampires, apart from the church offering enough Gold Coins for the commission, no one else would spend that much money," Raymond explained. "There’s a lot of reward money this time, but the credit will be taken by the church’s people. After we split the reward, you can just go back first, I still need to make arrangements for the deceased."
Raymond was in a foul mood, and his words were no longer so courteous. Dividing the reward money was certainly necessary, as Zheng Yichen had put in a lot of effort during the battle and killed many vampires. No one had any objections to splitting the reward money equally. The only issue was that, because of the casualties, each person had to give up an additional share to the families of the deceased Hunter-Demons.
In the inn, Katrina couldn’t help but cover her mouth upon seeing Zheng Yichen return: "Oh my god, you’re injured so badly... Huh?"
His blood-covered appearance was frightening, but after she ignored the filthy blood to examine his wounds, the girl’s expression couldn’t hold and she released a sigh of relief. The injuries on Zheng Yichen’s body were not that severe.
"My recovery ability is quite good." Zheng Yichen looked at the wound on his arm; some of the smaller cuts had already disappeared. This healing power came from absorbing the blood of the vampires of this world and he was currently in the digestion phase, which meant his recovery was notably enhanced. He estimated that smaller wounds would likely be gone after a night’s sleep, and the larger ones should heal in a few days.
He took out a bag and placed it on the table: "I’m not very familiar with the local prices, is this amount of money considered a lot or a little?"
Katrina opened the bag to see a small pile of shiny Gold Coins: "It’s a lot! It’s enough for us to buy a house here and still have some left over."
"So the church really is rich."
The Forest Witch’s expression stiffened for a moment, as if she momentarily suspected that Zheng Yichen had sold them out to acquire so much money, with a horde of the church’s axemen potentially standing right outside.
With money now in hand, it was time to consider the future. The collaboration with Raymond had to continue while still seeking out anomalies. Getting a suitable vehicle was also on the agenda. Zheng Yichen looked at his computer, regretting not downloading some materials beforehand.
Forget about making glass; the main thing was steam engines. It would be best to craft a badass steam punk-style motorcycle... But first, he would wait until his body had fully recovered.
Early the next morning, Zheng Yichen could hardly wait to take a bath, washing off the dried and somewhat greasy vampire brains and clean the wounds on his body, which showed no sign of the smaller injuries, and the larger ones were also healing rapidly. The bite mark on his arm was still visible but not as severe as before.
This regenerative power made Zheng Yichen feel like he was truly beginning to grow into an Extraordinary creature.
