Chapter 44: Chapter 42 The Key Is the Ability to Explode Equipment_1
How can one judge what kind of world lies behind an abnormal vision? Zheng Yichen had encountered such visions twice before and had gained some experience. He knew that if his body experienced a significant boost in vitality upon entering the world behind a vision, then it indicated that the world was formidable.
If his body and certain special perceptions were suppressed, feeling extremely oppressive, then there was no need to think too much. He would just turn his head and leave, as such a world would most likely be a deadly desert for him.
"Alright, let’s consider the previous matter settled. I’m leaving," Zheng Yichen said as he put the book back in its place, preparing to leave this location.
"Wait, don’t go. We have something we wish to ask of you!" the town mayor quickly spoke, "We will offer a generous reward!"
"Oh? Let’s hear it." Zheng Yichen now understood the reason behind the mayor’s ecstatic expression from earlier. There was a murder case in the town, and rather than bringing in the police, they were seeking a ’Hunter-Demon.’ Did this imply the murder was not due to human actions?
"It’s a murder case in the town. We were originally planning to ask the city police."
Police, hm? With a quick understanding, Zheng Yichen gained some knowledge about the specifics of this world. He compared it with time periods, and judged that it was probably akin to Earth from before his transmigration, somewhere between the 17th and 18th centuries.
"If it’s not an ordinary incident, then why not seek the church?"
Zheng Yichen posed his own question.
The town mayor looked helpless: "Mainly because many people in the town don’t believe the murder was caused by an evil creature, and also, hiring a cleric from the church is very expensive, especially since this place is remote, and they might not be willing to come."
"So a Hunter-Demon comes cheaper?"
"No, no, no, the most important part is that many people don’t believe the murder was caused by an evil creature. If you can capture the chief culprit, convincing others, you will definitely receive a generous reward."
Although the mayor didn’t state it so bluntly, Zheng Yichen could still hear some implications. He would definitely receive a generous reward... which was also cheaper than inviting the clerics from the church?
"Alright, let me first understand the general situation."
Zheng Yichen stopped the mayor from continuing. He had to obtain some money in this world for sure. As for powerful extraordinary creatures, he definitely wanted to get some of those too. The zombies and walking corpses he had dealt with before didn’t donate their blood, and even if he used the black spear to extract blood, he wouldn’t be able to taste it.
But he didn’t even want to try what kind of flavor that decayed blood had!
Better to find some relatively normal extraordinary creatures, even a vampire would be preferable over a walking corpse, wouldn’t it? As for witches, it would depend on their appearance.
"You agree?"
"Yes, I agree. Any other questions?"
"No, none at all."
Zheng Yichen had decided to stay in this little town for the time being. The townsfolk were still filled with skepticism about his identity. They knew about the existence of Hunter-Demons, but had never seen a real one. In such times, most people tended to spend their entire lives in one place, and the channels for news were relatively insular. Their knowledge of anything beyond was mostly hearsay.
In the minds of many in the town, Hunter-Demons were supposed to be clad in leather or light armor, hanging with weapons used to fend off evil creatures, or some small trophies won in battle. They were imagined to be disheveled from their frequent outdoors endeavors, with matted hair peeking from beneath their hats and long beards that gave them a weathered look, and they were expected to sport cloaks or capes to cover the larger weapons they carried.
Their bodies were strong and they gave off an air of unapproachability, remaining highly vigilant about everything around them. After all, the books said that evil creatures were cunning and deceptive. A non-vigilant Hunter-Demon was likely to die quickly. And another thing, in the imagination of the townspeople, Hunter-Demons were definitely not young.
Among their conjured images, the only thing Zheng Yichen seemed to match was having a strong body. Beyond that, there wasn’t a single detail that fit with the townsfolk’s preconceived notions.
Could this young man really be a Hunter-Demon? Someone like him would be more suited to take part in the Knight’s selection.
As for the curious glances from the residents, Zheng Yichen found a spot to eat some compressed biscuits. The taste of these things was generally not great, but in Hazy City, you could buy tasty ones if you had the money.
As for the food from this place, Zheng Yichen had no immediate desire to try, worrying it might cause some problems.
He was also observing the situation in the town. Despite its remoteness, there weren’t few inhabitants. Judging from their clothes, the living conditions here weren’t that bad. Women farmers he passed dressed appropriately, and there were people riding by in carriages, clearly the wealthy of this secluded town.
Some of the children in the town looked at Zheng Yichen with curiosity, wanting to come closer but getting pulled back by their parents. Overall, the entire town was quite unwelcoming towards outsiders like Zheng Yichen.
The main reason was his identity as an unknown "Hunter-Demon." He wasn’t a police officer sent from a major city to handle cases here. Plus, his appearance deviated from the stereotypical image of a Hunter-Demon in the minds of the townsfolk, so naturally, their attitude towards Zheng Yichen was one of respectful distance.
Zheng Yichen didn’t mind. His main goal was to find the extraordinary creature mentioned by the town’s mayor, kill it, collect the reward, and then go see the big cities in this world. Information was just too limited in small places.
"It feels like I’m in a detective game... but aren’t they a bit too uncooperative?" Zheng Yichen, looking at the townspeople bypassing him, could hardly suppress the urge to curse them out. He had taken on this job for his own sake but was also helping out here.
Was this the way to treat a kind soul?
The grumbling Zheng Yichen returned to the mayor’s house. The mayor’s wife’s eyes brightened upon seeing Zheng Yichen’s physique, her demeanor much warmer than that of the troublesome... townspeople.
"Have you found out anything? Take a seat and have some water."
"No need for water, I still have things to do." Zheng Yichen felt uncomfortable under the Auntie’s gaze. He admitted he was much stronger compared to an average adult, but if his build was to attract anyone, it should be young ladies.
He sought out the mayor, deciding to first examine the victims’ bodies.
The corpses were well-preserved, though in this era there wasn’t really a morgue. Preservation meant keeping the bodies in a cool place, and those that had been dead longer were already buried because of the bad smell that the townspeople couldn’t stand.
Zheng Yichen saw bodies without heads, with obvious burn marks around the neck, which led him immediately to think of swords or knives with flame demon possession. If it wasn’t done post-mortem, he now had another reason to deal with the extraordinary creature.
Killing monsters for loot! He didn’t get a golden finger mission panel after transmigrating, but that didn’t affect his eager heart to take on quests at this moment.
