I Am Also An Extraordinary Creature

Chapter 43: Chapter 41: Too Traditional_1

"Drive me away? I think what you really want is to get rid of me," Zheng Yichen glanced at the broken wooden spear on the ground, somewhat displeased. There’s been a murder in town and now are you harboring huge suspicions towards outsiders? This... Uh, that doesn’t seem to be a problem?

Especially in a place that seems so backward in such an era.

"No, no, no, we only want to drive his excellency away, we definitely have no other intentions," the town’s mayor hurriedly shook his head to explain: "We will compensate you..."

"There’s no need for compensation, I will leave after I understand a few things."

Zheng Yichen wasn’t interested in compensation; judging by the small town, he knew there wouldn’t be much money here, perhaps some gold and jewels, but the value of those things... alright, if there’s money, he might as well take some as travel expenses when he leaves.

The mayor anxiously agreed, and Zheng Yichen’s main goal was to understand the specific circumstances of this world. Although the town was remote, it still maintained contact with the outside world and wasn’t isolated. The mayor answered all of Zheng Yichen’s numerous questions one by one.

When Zheng Yichen inquired about ’ghouls’ and vengeful spirits, the mayor’s look towards him changed to one of... wild joy? That must have been the emotion.

"Are you, by any chance, a Hunter-Demon?"

"Ah?" Zheng Yichen blinked, this occupation exists here too? Thinking about the rotting flesh he had encountered before, it seemed not so strange for this world to have such a profession: "Sort of, but not very professional."

He wasn’t lying about that.

"That’s wonderful!"

In the mayor’s eyes, Zheng Yichen was no longer some mysterious foreigner but a mysterious, foreign Hunter-Demon. Since he was from outside, it was normal for him to be unfamiliar with many local matters. His distinct style and different clothing made sense to the mayor, who thought it natural for a Hunter-Demon to dress like that.

That kind of clothing looked different from theirs, but as battle protection gear, its protective nature was quite evident.

After the mayor’s attitude became enthusiastic towards Zheng Yichen, he answered every question, and Zheng Yichen further understood the world’s situation.

This world had many supernatural events, with vampires, specters, ghouls, witches, and even demons. Since there were such creatures, naturally, there was an existence like the church.

After understanding the specifics, Zheng Yichen nodded. The Hunter-Demons of this world were not like what he had imagined; they were not the kind that often got stiffed on payments and were stingy with medicine, and the extraordinary creatures didn’t appear very frequently either.

For many people, such extraordinary creatures were only part of stories, but they definitely existed. The town’s mayor had seen a cleric from the church exorcise an evil spirit when he was younger.

He had seen it with his own eyes, but most people in the town had never encountered an extraordinary creature.

After gathering enough information, Zheng Yichen had made a preliminary judgment about this world. The technology was still developing, and besides extraordinary creatures, the weaponry included firearms, such as flintlock guns, while long-range weapons were mostly bows and crossbows.

Extraordinary creatures were not something you could casually encounter in groups, and most could only be found in sparsely populated or special places. The abandoned graveyard where Zheng Yichen first appeared was one such place, and the presence of numerous corpses there made it a hotspot for extraordinary creatures.

Places teeming with life seldom saw the likes of ghouls, which mostly hid in graveyards. They were quite ferocious but could be taken down with numbers on your side. All it would take was a bit of courage, and an average adult with a club could knock out several at a time.

In the abandoned graveyard, Zheng Yichen had encountered dozens of bodies, which couldn’t exactly be called ghouls, but rather zombies... Those things, although frightening and indifferent to pain and death, had brittle bones and rotting flesh that offered little resistance, meaning that a single determined adult with a stick could take down several of them.

This world likely didn’t have the sort of magic that could destroy a town on a whim.

Vampires and witches, according to the town mayor, only appeared in certain books, and he knew very little about them. Weapons like firearms were not to be found in his small town, and Zheng Yichen was unsure whether bows and crossbows were available.

To Zheng Yichen, this world seemed like a low-magic setting, with supernatural powers that, for most ordinary people, were as unattainable as an Olympic gold medal on Earth—tangible but genuinely acquired by only a few, aside from fakes. You might learn about their existence through various means, but might never get the chance to come face-to-face with such beings or witness their powers, most of which were probably only useful in a supportive role...

The town mayor was able to share so much primarily because he had a few books at home, one of which he had bought from the church. It was a rarity among common folk and contained information about many extraordinary creatures... oh, here referred to as evil creatures.

It was a sort of educational book.

Zheng Yichen perused the book at the mayor’s house and had to admit that it was rather exquisite. Although not a product of modern industrial printing, it thoughtfully included some illustrations. The beings Zheng Yichen encountered in the abandoned graveyard were walking corpses, the likes of zombies and ghouls.

Ghouls were much stronger than those creatures, ranking higher on the food chain than zombies. They were robust, and even a group of several strong adults might get injured trying to subdue one.

Vampires in this world perished in sunlight and feared silver, fitting the profile of traditional vampires. Unlike in many of Earth’s animated works, being a vampire with traditional vulnerabilities seemed almost shameful.

The illustration of the witch depicted an ugly old hag. After reading the book, Zheng Yichen, as a modern person, couldn’t help thinking... it was all too damn traditional.

It was as traditional as the Renaissance. As a vampire, you’re afraid of sunlight and too shy to wear silver jewelry when going to the market—is that reasonable? As a witch, you’re not a delicate or naturally cute girl—is that reasonable??

What’s more, the illustrations were uglier than the next, making Zheng Yichen wonder whether they were purposely drawn so hideously to emphasize their evil nature, or if that was their true appearance. As a transmigrator, hearing the word ’church’ always made him think of characters like swordsman Yue Buqun and the bad guy Hua Tiegang, which, he thought, somehow didn’t seem quite right?

After finishing the book, Zheng Yichen pondered over his next moves. Finding extraordinary creatures was essential; otherwise, over time, his body would wither. It was akin to tending to a plant, except he would have to water himself periodically because no one else would do it for him.

Furthermore, seeking out anomalies was a must, as he feared that the extraordinary creatures of this world might eventually fail to satisfy his extraordinary needs. He would have to find anomalies and touch upon stronger worlds.
