Chapter 738: Of those that bore it’s mark

It stood as a fortress of war with a size almost comparable to the mountains that demarcated the Eastern Highlands of Ra’as from the rest of the continent.

Instead of stone, however, this fortress was made out of solid ice, covered in snow, and lit up by a pale light source that hung in the air, its true nature obscured by several clouds.

The land on which Sayda stood was completely covered in snow, almost six inches deep, and all around was a fog that ensured a complete lack of visibility.

The chilly winds mixed with hail were no less brutal than outside causing Sayda to disregard scrutiny of the fortress in favor of swiftly making her way into the fortress.

The fortress gates stood tall, with the image of the Nighteye embedded at the center.

Sayda placed her hands against the gates, seeking to push it open only to pull back as her expression displayed a hint of pain.

Frowning, she glanced at her palms only to realize that she had actually suffered some damage.

Her hands were covered with a thin layer of frost which had caused bloody red lines, hence the pain she experienced.

If she had kept going, she just might have lost her hands to the ice.

Pursing her lips, she took a step back and unleashed the full extent of her Authority, intending to devour the gates.

A disembodied mouth appeared and chomped down on the gates, leaving behind a clear mark, only for that mark to be swiftly covered up by another layer of frost.

As for the disembodied mouth, it froze over before shattering to pieces.

"Hmm." Sayda, not about to give up just yet, performed another Miracle, this time, creating a bottomless pit with a terrifying pulling force.

The gates began to show signs of wear as the suction continued, causing cracks after which pieces of the gate began to fly into the pit.

From small pieces to large chunks, the bottomless pit devoured everything only for the gate to recover the parts that were torn away.

Realizing that at this rate, she might end up being stuck forever, Sayda had no choice but to move quickly, or else she ended up being turned into an ice statue.

As it was, a thin layer of frost had begun to appear on her skin.

She increased the size of the bottomless pit and multiplied its suction force, which ended up creating a hole in the gate, one she immediately utilized as she picked up Douglas and literally launched herself forward.

She barely got through just as the hole was about to close, making her way into a glorious hall held up by pillars forged out of solid ice and a concave ceiling that had murals drawn on it, murals of the werewolves and their history.

Sayda paid no heed to that as she focused instead on preventing herself from being encased in ice for eternity as she realized with visible annoyance that just standing on the floor gave the same result as when she tried to open the gates with her hands.

To resolve this, as she was unable to fly, Sayda opted for a different solution, which involved continuously creating mouths that devoured the ice, threatening her.

For each mouth that was frozen, another took its place, and so, Sayda was able to stay the problem for now, but she understood that this was not something she could stand for too long.

As for Douglas, she immediately tossed him into her stomach for safekeeping after which she began her first steps into the hall.

It didn’t take long for her to come across the former inhabitants of the fortress as numerous ice statues stood dormant in the hall.

During the disaster that led to the werewolves almost going extinct, there was said to have been a terrifying winter storm that froze everything.

Not only the werewolves but even humans that had been close by ended up getting caught in it.

It appeared that these were those unfortunate souls.

Their true appearances had long since been covered by snow, however, Sayda could easily guess the terror their faces held.

It was amusing, to say the least.

In any case, she continued onward, deeper into the ice fortress.

The legend stated that the origin of the disaster was in the deepest parts of Luna’s Dwelling, within the meeting halls of the twelve tribes and that was where Sayda was off to.

Of course, she didn’t know its exact location but considering what she was searching for was an aspect of the Absolute One, it should be easy to find it... at least, that’s what she thought.

And so, as she made her way inward, Archibald and his cohorts, Anika and Hamon, took their first steps onto the land that was once regarded as Luna’s Dwelling.

Taking deep breaths, Archibald looked around, his blue eyes piercing through the winter fog that obscured the surrounding area, allowing him to make out the ice statues standing within the snow.

"Unbelievable," Hamon muttered with Anika echoing a similar sentiment as they regarded the ice fortress with a mixture of awe and shock.

"Come," Archibald remarked, snapping them from their reverie. "We have to head in now or it won’t be long before we turn into ice statues."

Though not as merciless as was the case with Sayda due to the werewolf bloodline flowing through Archibald and the potions flowing through Anika and Hamon, the chances of turning into ice statues remained, albeit a slower process.

With that said, Archibald led the way to the gates, taking a stand there before going on his knees and muttering a short prayer.

"O Lady of the Night, Most Blessed Mother of the Wolves and Queen of Winter, your son, albeit impure, has come to pay homage. Please, let me in."

There was a creak and a snap, after which the gates began to open, revealing the hall within.

As Hamon and Anika sucked in cold air at the sight within, Archibald placed his hand against his chest as he looked down.

The prayer he had uttered was not taught by previous generations and instead was a prayer that instinctively came to those who had been cursed by the Midnight Pearl and bore its mark.

As long as they arrived within Twilight, they could say it and the gates would open, inviting them into the fortress.

Taking a deep breath, Archibald intoned softly. "Come, we have much to do."
