Chapter 699: His life’s work

"Why?" Archibald muttered as he walked through the wilderness of Henos, away from the valley that had once been home to what was his greatest triumph.

Plagued by numerous emotions, most of which were negative, it was difficult to tell if they were a result of his inner thoughts or a residual effect of the waves he’d been subjected to at the valley before he passed out.

If only he hadn’t accepted Alex into the village... would he have been able to avert the disaster that followed soon after their arrival?

Archibald couldn’t figure out the answer to that question but even as it was farfetched to blame Alex for what happened, he found himself doing so.

Taking a wrong step, he tripped over a small rock, falling face-first into the dirt.

As he lay there, mind blank, it was almost as though all strength within his body had decided to take a break, leaving him unable to rise back to his feet.

"I failed." He muttered in a choked tone, his eyes quickly growing wet as he buried his face into the earth.

"I failed."

It was his life’s work, one that had been banned by the TruthSeekers due to the risks attached to it.

He had thought that with sufficient results, he would finally be able to prove to those old geezers that his work deserved support.

But now, everything was gone.

The specimen, his writings... everything, nothing was left, and as much as he wished to go back to ensure that was the case, the entities he saw after he’d awakened were enough of a deterrent not to do so.

Even a fool would be able to tell that something huge was happening in the valley... something that didn’t involve him.

And so, he lay on the ground, doing nothing but inhaling the dust while languishing in self-pity.

But then, his breathing stilled, after which... "No." He breathed out as he raised his dirt-covered face to look ahead.

"They were not so weak-minded as to accept such a defeat. So just like them, I won’t give up. My ancestors were a noble race, so I, too, must carry myself as such."

As he said that, he struggled to lift himself up, only to fall back down.

But that didn’t stop him as he tried again and again, until finally, he got on his knees.

Clenching his fists, he looked towards the blue sky above.

"I can’t give up... they are waiting for me. To bring back the glory of the wolves, I will keep moving forward. No adversity shall stand in my way."

So far, he’d been playing with his genetic material to recreate the extinct race, after all, it was difficult to come across pure werewolf materials and even more so to get one cheap with enough genetic material to carry out the sort of experiment his research needed.

Unfortunately, judging from what happened to the villagers, it was clear that his genetic material was not sufficient.

He needed something purer... perhaps genetic material belonging to the alphas.

However, there were no more living alphas to his knowledge... but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make use of the dead ones.

He reckoned it was time he paid a visit to the ruins of his ancestors, not only to pay homage but to get what was needed.

One way or another, Archibald swore he would bring them back and at that time, he would finally be able to have a family he could call his own... a family that did not betray one another to get ahead.

The Many-faced Fallacy was torn into two equal halves by Alex’s attack, disrupting its Authority and causing its already discordant thoughts to fall into chaos.

But this didn’t mean it was dead, after all, its vitality was not so easily defeated.

Flesh-like tendrils emerged from the separated pieces of flesh, swiftly entangling in a bid to bring together the two halves.

"Arwen!" Alex exclaimed as he was once again snapped, though not once, but twice.

One snap stopped his free fall, giving him the freedom to traverse the skies unimpeded, while the other conjured a mass of black and white flames that swiftly began to devour one-half of the Fallacy.

A frightening screech echoed, but it did nothing to stop the others from acting as Arwen took a deep breath, trusting in herself just like the others had trusted in her.

Raising a finger, she watched a pale flame tongue emerge, bringing a smile to the corners of her lips.

She then pointed the finger at the second half of the Fallacy, causing it to burst into pale flames that swiftly ate at its life force.

Wait!

Ana quickly exclaimed, using a dragon tongue before rushing forward to take out a piece of flesh.

With a thought from Arwen, her flames receded long enough for Ana to use her claws to take out a piece of flesh after which the flames returned with even greater force.

Ana transformed back into her human form, now holding on to a dried-up piece of granulated flesh belonging to the Many faced fallacy.

"What do you want to do?" Nadia asked as she approached.

"Look into its past," Ana said. "Perhaps it has something we could use in our search for the Beast."

After saying that, she closed her eyes and a moment later, dove headfirst into the river of time, utilizing the piece of flesh as a navigator to locate its history.

Meanwhile, the people of Nysodosia broke into celebration as they learned of the fall of the beast that sought to bring chaos upon them.

"Commander... Perhaps we should not have shot down the dragon."

"Oh shut it. I still stand by what I did!... If she hadn’t brought that creature towards us, we wouldn’t have suffered any damage at all!"

Deciding not to argue with their leader, the soldiers manning the Western wall began to go about repairs of the damaged wall, leaving the captain to fume in silence.

At another location, the battle between two powerful forces was coming to a head with a victor soon to be decided.
