Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 692: Shoot her down!
Chapter 692: Shoot her down!
"It’s gaining on us!" Arwen said in a panic as she looked back only to lay eyes on the approaching many-faced entity.
Despite the creature not being of divine origin, Arwen was forced to look away due to the sharp pain that assailed her senses the next moment, a physical manifestation of the Authority wielded by the monster.
Despite its humanoid hands, which served as its feet, being quite thin, they somehow managed to cause tremors each time they made contact with the earth, and even worse, they were capable of carrying the nauseatingly long and large body of the creature, ensuring that it moved faster than it looked.
If one were to make a comparison, its movement was similar to a centipede, especially if one looked at it from above.
In any case, the Divine Fallacy chased after them with a single-minded focus, ignoring every other Hunter, though it had already killed almost ninety percent of the hunter population.
This outcome was not because the hunters were weak.
In truth, after dealing with the mutants, they had tried to take on the creature, but their attempts failed woefully.
Apart from the fact that they were ill-equipped to handle such a monstrosity, they were even stripped of their Abilities, a result of the creature’s Authority dominating all others.
This also prevented them from fleeing as Abilities that revolved around teleportation or rapidly crossing a far distance were locked away.
This meant that if the hunter wasn’t naturally quick, they would have no choice but to succumb to death at the hands of the Fallacy, which was asking for much as the entity, despite its large size, was fast enough to compete with a vampire in speed.
Due to this, Ana had no choice but to transform into her dragon form and then flee towards Nysodosia.
Her transformation was both a blessing and a curse as though it allowed the surviving hunters a chance to escape, it also caused the Fallacy to chase after them.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t still out of the range of the creature’s Authority which weighed down heavily on her like shackles and left her unable to go above the clouds, potentially escaping its clutches.
Nadia, once I’m far enough, you will leave with Arwen.
"What about you?"
I’ll handle the creature.
"That’s too risky. We take it on together."
Nadia.
"Just focus on escaping its influence," Nadia said.
Stubborn.
And so, Ana picked up the pace, but almost like the entity knew what she was planning, it prevented her from leaving its sphere of influence as it focused all its Authority on her, slowing her down even further.
"Damn it!" Nadia cursed as she tried to cast a spell using deviltongue only to be unsuccessful.
As long as the Fallacy’s Authority remained active, no other supernatural creature could exert its Will on the aether.
Just then, Nadia and Arwen heard Ana.
Hold on!
The next instant, she pivoted at an angle, causing the girls to hold on for dear life while screaming at the top of their lungs.
Just as they wished to question why Ana had done this, the answer revealed itself.
A cannonball shot past them and buried itself in the body of the creature.
The Fallacy also tried to dodge, but because its body was too large, though it avoided a direct hit, the cannonball still struck its side, resulting in an explosion of gunpowder and Quillion, causing it to let out a cry of anguish.
Almost at the same time, its Authority wavered and Ana gained speed.
"What was that?" Nadia asked, both thankful for its arrival and also terrified of what would have happened if Ana hadn’t reacted swiftly.
Nysodosia.
Just as she said, the Nysodosian defense had long since noticed the creature and were trying to prevent it from reaching their walls... or at least that’s what she thought.
Though she was partially correct, that wasn’t all of it.
The cannonball was in truth aiming for Ana, not the Many faced Fallacy.
They could tell that it was chasing her and so, hoped to prevent her from reaching their walls, which could potentially stop the entity from attacking them.
"Damn it, the stupid dragon dodged!" The commander of the wall cursed.
"Commander, isn’t that the last dragon from Ra’as?... Do you think it’s right to shoot her down, dooming her to death?"
The commander glared at the soldier who spoke. "Would you rather she leads whatever that monster is to our walls?"
"No, sir."
"Then, fucking shoot her down!"
"Yes sir!"
The next instant, several cannons were fired, leaving very little room to maneuver.
Ana’s eyes narrowed as she finally realized that she was marked as a target by the cannonballs.
Rather disappointing, but she didn’t dare to change her route and instead, continued to charge towards the Nysodosian wall.
"Damn it, go elsewhere and stop charging at us!" The commander exclaimed in a panic.
"Ana," Nadia muttered.
Hold on.
Ana said as she allowed herself to go low, slowing her flight speed significantly before then suddenly making a quick turn, evading both the cannonballs that sought to rip through her and the hands of the Fallacy, which aimed to capture her.
It was a risky maneuver, but with hundreds of years of experience under her belt, Ana executed it perfectly, leaving very little room for error.
Before the Fallacy could make a quick turn, the cannonballs descended on it, resulting in numerous explosions and a piercing cry as it sought for cover.
Finally, out of the range of the monster’s authority, Ana didn’t hesitate to launch herself towards the sky, quickly hiding in the sparse clouds overhead before transforming back into her human form while Nadia conjured an invisible platform for them to stand on.
"This is the worst place to catch a breath," Nadia admitted with Ana and Arwen chuckling in amusement.
Glancing at Ana, Arwen said. "That was really dangerous."
"It was." Ana nodded. "But we survived."
"Now what?"
"Now, we wait," Ana remarked without even giving it a second thought.
If the Nysodosians had not aimed for her, she might have suggested helping them but since they had dared to do so, then there was no reason to offer any aid.
So they would wait for the right time to strike as though the Fallacy was dangerous, it was most definitely not undying.
Most importantly, Kallimedon’s words still echoed in their minds with Ana postulating that whatever that creature was, it was connected to the Beast that they were in search of.
