Chapter 691: A spur of the moment decision

Recognizing the Fixer, Alex inquired. "What are you doing here?"

"I need you to come with me." The Fixer replied prompting a pointed look from Alex.

"Why?"

"I need your help to deal with the Swindler of the Heavens. He is on the precipice of ascension and if he does ascend, the world as we know it would be doomed."

Alex, confused as he was by the Fixer’s statement, turned to Elena for an explanation.

"What he said is true," Elena replied before adding. "At least, according to Ulysses."

"As much as I’d like a detailed explanation..." Alex trailed off just as another wave of negative emotions swept past them.

The Fixer’s expression shifted, perhaps affected by the sheer amount of negativity contained within the wave, which was a surprise considering Alex, Victoria, and Elena remained unaffected for some reason.

"You have to come with me now." The Fixer said, his tone growing forceful.

Alex frowned, taking a moment to glance at the naked statue before glancing back at the Fixer. "Look, even if it’s as you said, what does that have to do with me?"

"You have a GodKiller. We need it to kill the Jester."

"That..." Alex’s frown deepened. "How do you know?"

"The Goddess has her ways." The Fixer simply replied.

"You bastards were spying on us."

"I do not have the time to exchange words with you, Alexander. We must depart now."

"Look here..."

Alex never got the chance to complete his statement as yet another wave of negative emotion swept past them, this one much more powerful than the ones that had come before it.

Even the trio that had previously remained unaffected had to back away due to the sheer force behind it.

"It’s coming," Alex muttered before glancing at Victoria. "Have you completed the summoning?"

Victoria froze as the answer to that question was definitely not what Alex wished to hear.

Realizing that something was wrong, Alex glanced at where she had drawn the summoning circle.

Although complete, it showed no sign of activity which meant that the summoning hadn’t even begun.

"Victoria!"

"I was distracted."

"Damn it." Alex glanced at the naked statue on which fissures had begun to emerge.

"What’s wrong?" Elena asked.

"Alexander Regulus, you must come with me now!" The Fixer bellowed from the side, blinded by anger as he tried to grab Alex.

Victoria grabbed him by the wrist only to discover that he was stronger than she initially thought, causing her to exert more force to stop him.

"Damn it, I don’t have the Godkiller with me!"

"Alex!"

In the ensuing chaos, even more fissures appeared on the surface of the statue, and soon enough, a huge crack appeared, revealing a gaping maw filled with serrated teeth.

The next instant, a song could be heard along with the playing of illusory instruments.

Behind these supernatural phenomena, there was an odd combination of both divine and devilish auras, marking the imminent arrival of the Broken Saintess.

"Fuck!" Alex panicked, perhaps exhibiting a negative emotion for the first time since the appearance of the statue.

In the heat of the moment and compelled by foolishness, Alex activated what he’d kept in place earlier than he was supposed to, causing the purple glow emanating from the crack to swiftly darken.

But this was not a sign of success as his skin was dyed a sickly purple hue, revealing that just as the Broken Saintess was being influenced by his essence, he was also being influenced by the Broken Saintess.

"Alex!" Both Victoria and Elena exclaimed, instinctively rushing to his rescue, leaving the Fixer to do as he pleased.

Left to his whims, the Fixer took out the revolver gifted by the Goddess and aimed at the naked statue.

Pulling the trigger, what followed was an extremely loud whistling sound accompanied by a resounding boom, after which a terrifying explosion engulfed the naked statue.

With just one shot, more than half of the revolver’s capacity was lost, leaving The Fixer with one more shot that wasn’t even fully charged.

Overtaken by foolishness and a surge of negative emotions, he made a silly mistake.

His eyes only revealed a sliver of clarity after the explosion occurred, kicking up dust and pebbles.

The shockwave had even sent Alex, along with Elena and Victoria flying several meters back.

"What just happened?" Alex asked with a pained expression on his face.

He looked down at his hand, realizing that the influence of the Broken Saintess had stopped, though not before swallowing up both his right and left arms up to his elbows.

"Damn it." Alex cursed as he got back on his feet.

"Are you alright?" Victoria asked.

Alex replied. "You guys should have focused on stopping the Fixer and dealing with the naked statue."

"It was a spur-of-the-moment decision," Elena admitted.

"I thought you’d have matured enough to know that spur-of-the-moment decisions are most times... foolish." Alex trailed off as he realized something at that moment.

He glanced at Elena. "This Jester guy, what is he the God of again?"

"Foolishness."

"... That’s how it is," Alex muttered as he realized that he had been influenced by the Jester without his knowledge.

For quite some time, if he were being honest.

Was this the terror of a deity on the verge of ascension?

"That’s why the Fixer said the world would be doomed. A world of fools would sooner or later implode on itself."

"That’s the same thing Ulysses said... in a different way."

"What now?" Victoria asked as they stared at the center of the valley that was still obscured by dust.

Alex let out a sigh as he took a step forward. "Now we hope for the best."

Just then, the Fixer revealed himself, taking steady steps toward the trio.

"What happened to the Godkiller?" He asked.

Though not as aggressive as before, he was still single-mindedly focused on Alex and the Godkiller, Excalibur.

"I handed it over to a Greater Spirit." Alex didn’t bother trying to hide anything, leaving the Fixer livid as he scolded him.

"You imbecile!... How could you leave such a powerful weapon in the hands of a Greater Spirit!?"

"Firstly, it is mine and I decide what I wish to do with it," Alex said. "Secondly, they can’t make use of it."

"So you can retrieve it?"

"Yes." Alex nodded. "But we might have to fight to get it back."

"Fight a Greater Spirit?... Do you even hear yourself?... Those creatures are on par with Demigods in Authority here on Eventide and have even more Authority in the Spirit World!... How do you plan on facing off against such an entity?"

Glancing at the center of the valley once again, Alex replied. "By borrowing the help of a newborn deity, of course."
