Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 682: So many Hunters

Chapter 682: So many Hunters

The girls were of the understanding that they had finally arrived at their destination, only for that to not be the case as they were told that they would need to embark on another boat ride to arrive at the Hunter’s Association headquarters, which was located at a secluded corner of the valley Nysodosia occupied.

In truth, the building they had entered was once the headquarters but due to an unfortunate flooding accident that claimed the lives of many, the organization opted to relocate to another place with less water and more land.

Apparently, the flooding incident was not exactly a new thing in the City of Canals.

Due to the numerous artificial lakes created by Empress Arethusa, Nysodosia was prone to floods, hence the reason most of its buildings were so tall.

Rumors had been running around among the nobles that there were plans by the royal family to carry out a new project to work on the artificial lakes, either reducing the amount of water coming from them or outright stopping a few; that way, the flooding problems would be dealt with... hopefully.

In any case, a boat was waiting to take them and after a bit of coin changed hands, the rower was more than happy to give the girls an update on the situation in the Association.

"Most of the Hunters out on work were ordered to return around the start of the civil war."

"Do you know why?" Ana asked after relaying what the rower had said to Arwen and Nadia.

The rower shook his head as he replied in Impala. "No, but there are rumors."

"What kind?"

"Something big is about to happen in the Association, like really big. Some people are saying it has to do with the Beast."

"It’s been discovered?" Ana asked with a hopeful look only for the rower to respond.

"How do I know?... But that might be the case. From what I heard, the head of the association might even make an appearance."

"Is that a big deal as well?"

"Of course!" The rower said. "From what I heard, it’s been several years since the head of the association appeared at a public gathering, so naturally, the fact that he is making an appearance means that the scale of whatever is happening is beyond big, it’s huge."

"I see," Ana muttered.

In truth, she was slightly worried, after all, with so many things happening in Henos, the appearance of yet another big thing didn’t sit right with her.

"What now?" Nadia asked after Ana had relayed what she’d heard from the rower.

"We might have to prepare for the worst-case scenario," Ana said.

Arwen inquired from the side. "Are we in danger?"

"I don’t know but it’s better to be prepared than to not be."

Nodding in agreement, the three ladies went silent and kept their attention on the path ahead.

Soon enough, they arrived at their destination.

It was a tall building with aesthetics that seemed to fuse the barbarian style and that of the developed cities.

"Just head on inside. As long as you follow the right path, no one will stop you from going in." The rower said.

"Thank you."

And so, the women disembarked before making their way into the building.

Along the way, they laid eyes on Hunters, some individually and others in groups, heading into the building while discussing among themselves.

Some took notice of the trio but didn’t appear bothered as they continued on their way, allowing the girls to let out a sigh of relief.

Of course, that didn’t mean they put their guard down as they walked into the building to discover that the number of Hunters was much more than they thought.

The main hall was filled to the brim and more continued to troop in.

"So many Hunters," Arwen muttered as the trio looked around, taking in what they could with their eyes and ears before finally, everyone suddenly went quiet.

In the same instant, at a balcony on the other side of the hall, opposite the building entrance, a young woman stepped out, wearing a purple gown that was tight at the upper part and slightly loose at the lower end.

"Everyone," she began, her voice as soothing as it was melodious. "Thank you all for answering the call."

If not for his mental fortitude which had gone through years upon years of tempering, laying eyes on the Corroded Queen would have caused severe disruption in the Fixer’s mental state.

This was an entity that, according to the Goddess, was not at the bottom of the spectrum of the Otherworldly like the HiveMind, nor was it at the peak like the Greatest Evil beyond the Veil.

It sat comfortably in between, which was why it was regarded as a 2nd-class Otherworldly.

If it were any other 2nd-Class, perhaps the Fixer would have figured out a way to repel the entity, but it just had to be this one.

It was at the cost of an entire ship, and it was that the Goddess learned of the capabilities of the Corroded Queen.

The domain of Corrosion, an inverse of the Domain of Steel wielded by the Hyenas and members of the Monster Wheel.

All metals within its sphere of influence could not escape the corrosion of the Queen, not even the submarine that the Fixer and Ulysses were currently in.

"I thought you said the Otherworldly are dormant!" Ulysses loudly said in a panic as his spirituality alerted him to the presence of the Corroded Queen.

The Fixer didn’t even bother responding as he looked around, trying to figure out a way to get the submarine to move as fast as possible before the Otherworldly acted.

Just then, he sensed danger causing him to once again pay attention to the large metal orb approaching.

One of the pyramids rotating about it was now pointed at their submarine, poised to act as a harpoon of sorts.

"Fuck." the Fixer cursed just as a golden glow erupted beside him and Elena appeared.

The next instant, the pyramid shot toward the submarine.
