Chapter 585: Journey into the Abyss
Chapter 585: Journey into the Abyss
"You want me to complete the remaining Trials?" Ulysses inquired with a complicated look on his face.
Alex nodded. "Yes, but in a controlled environment. It’s clear that one way or another, you would complete them so it’s best to do it out of your own free will so you can better control it. It’s either that or I kill you."
Ulysses’ heart tightened only to quickly relax as he could tell that Alex had no desire to end his life.
He was a bit too valuable for that at the moment.
Coughing awkwardly, Ulysses intoned. "I don’t think Humphrey would like that and what would people say?"
"Huh?"
"The Abyss Wheel is scorned in the supernatural world so you actively helping me complete the Trials would put you in a bad spot."
"Don’t worry, I don’t care. As long as you don’t impede my goal, then I care less about your identity." Alex remarked before proceeding to call out to a deck boy who walked over with a jar.
Taking a deep breath, Ulysses pondered for a bit before intoning. "Alright then. I’ll do as you’ve asked."
"Splendid. But you have to keep me in the loop, so we don’t get caught off guard like last time."
"Understood."
"You may leave."
"Thank you."
With that, Ulysses quickly left the dining hall, leaving Alex to continue with his lunch, not alone, but rather in the company of the other noble passengers, all of whom went about their meals with a methodical approach.
Ulysses didn’t immediately head to his room, instead making his way down to the lower decks to meet with the poorer folks aboard Athena.
Unlike their rich counterparts, their minds were still completely intact since there was no reason to adjust considering they were clueless to the situation above.
For the rest of the day, Ulysses spent time with them, indulging in conversations and little games while lying about the circumstances surrounding the ship.
Once the Lightbringer closed and the NightEye revealed itself, Ulysses left, promising to return the next day after which he headed to his room.
Having steeled his mind for what was to come, Ulysses closed his eyes and slept, opening himself to an invitation to that fractured realm.
***
Incredible. That you would be able to complete a Trial in such a short time. I am impressed.
Ulysses breathed heavily as he struggled to not die in the presence of the one-eyed Guardian of the Abyss Wheel.
Bleeding from all seven orifices, he gritted his teeth to remark. "I wish to take the next Trial."
But of course, why would I deny you your rights?
As the Guardian spoke, there was a trembling followed by the emergence of the arched gate made of intertwined tentacles.
At the center of the arched gate, two Locks had already come off, revealing two titles.
Despite being incomprehensible to read, Ulysses somehow managed to grasp what they meant.
The first was Abyssal, and the second was Lover of Despair.
As his labored breathing slowed and his bleeding reduced, he waited for the next Trial and it came a moment later.
Journey into the Abyss and make contact with the Illogicality you are connected to. Complete communion with them and only then would your Trial be complete.
"Wait what?"
Before Ulysses could question what that meant, he was kicked out and found himself back in his room, just in time to watch the Nighteye close and the Lightbringer open its doors.
But as beautiful as the scene was, Ulysses found himself deep in thought as he struggled to decipher the meaning of the Trial he was given.
He had a feeling he understood what the Guardian meant but just to be sure, he decided to seek a second opinion.
Alex opened his bedroom door in annoyance as he said with sleepy eyes. "You better have a good reason for disturbing me."
"I met with my Guardian," Ulysses remarked and just like that, the sleep in Alex’s eyes vanished, replaced instead by curiosity and slight surprise.
"I didn’t expect you to get done so fast." He said, realizing that his ability to quickly move up the Wheels wasn’t a transmigration perk, or maybe it was, and since Ulysses was an Error like him, he was able to enjoy it as well.
Regardless, he thought it best to warn the young man about moving too fast considering he had done the same thing and suffered as a result.
"I had considered postponing it till we got to land, but I got curious, and so, I did it."
"And?"
"I was asked to make contact with an Illogicality, specifically the one connected to me. Any idea what that is?"
Alex raised a brow as he recalled that Adam had referred to the Otherworldly as Illogicalities.
But if Otherworldly meant Illogicality and Ulysses was meant to make contact with the Illogicality he was connected to, didn’t that mean...
"You need to head into the Abyss," Alex muttered with a deep frown.
Ulysses let out a sigh. "It’s just as I feared. So I have to meet with the Lord of Flesh and Blood?"
"Seems like it." Alex intoned before pausing as he realized something. "Wait, how do you know its name?"
"Whispers." Ulysses casually replied before adding. "There’s no way I can do that and come back sane."
"You’d already be insane by now if not for your insane luck."
"So what now?" Ulysses asked. "There’s no way I’m heading into the Abyss. I much rather like being sane."
"There should be a way that doesn’t involve you returning as a madman." Alex intoned with Ulysses raising a brow.
"And that would be?"
"We’d figure something out. For now, get some rest, and also, don’t ever bother me when I sleep. I can get very grumpy."
"Noted."
Just as Ulysses was about to take his leave, a horn blared in the distance, catching the attention of the two with Alex muttering in slight confusion.
"I thought the Lightbringer opened its gates already."
"That’s not the Call of Dawn."
"The Call of what?"
Before Ulysses could say anything, Ana suddenly appeared in the hallway.
"Ana, what are you doing here?"
"There’s a ship, a really big one, like really really big. Like ten ships stacked together kind of big..."
"Ana..."
"Sorry, the really big ship is approaching us and is the source of the horn you might have heard."
"Just as I thought." Ulysses remarked with a worried look on his face. "It’s the Enclave."
