Chapter 578: Completing the second Trial
Chapter 578: Completing the second Trial
Within the space brimming with the essence of destruction, the crimson sea below roared with tempestuous waves as Alex, along with Humphrey and Ana, emerged from within black and white light.
As Ana was yet to recover from the loop she’d placed herself in with Tyrant, it was up to Humphrey to watch over her while Alex sought the reason they had returned to this treacherous space.
It didn’t take long before he found Ulysses, the young man currently lying unconscious on the boat Udele had confronted Alex on, which now teetered precariously at the edge of being devoured by the stormy waters, though for some strange reason, it still managed to remain intact.
Beside Ulysses was a strange man who radiated an odd aura that seemed reminiscent of calm waves, tinged with a slight layer of divinity.
Sensing his gaze, the blue-haired man raised his head to meet Alex’s gaze, causing Alex to put up his guard.
Surprisingly, the man did nothing, even proceeding to take a few steps away from Ulysses perhaps in a gesture of goodwill.
Though still cautious, Alex teleported over while asking Humphrey to wait.
He appeared beside Ulysses and placed two fingers below his nose to verify that the explorer was still alive, which thankfully, he was though his breathing was slightly erratic.
"What did you do to him?" Alex asked as he glanced at the blue-haired man.
The man calmly replied. "I did nothing, or rather, I did do something, but it was not to harm him. He would have gone mad had I not acted."
Alex’s expression shifted at that moment, only for him to feel a hand grab him, followed by a familiar voice.
"Alex, is that you?"
He glanced back to find that Ulysses was awake though he seemed a little bit out of it.
"What happened?"
Hesitant at first, Ulysses replied. "I don’t know. I tried to control it, but it was harder than I thought. I nearly lost my mind."
"Stop being vague, what are you talking about?"
"I’ve completed the second Trial, Alex," Ulysses replied in a helpless tone. "I nearly got possessed, but that didn’t happen, and it ended up awakening a hunger within me. I devoured the souls trapped on this ship."
Alex’s expression fell even further as he had to admit that Humphrey did have a point about Ulysses being a wild card.
To think that he had completed a Trial just like that.
Perhaps it wasn’t just Ana who was fated to be here but Ulysses as well.
He couldn’t decide if this was a good thing or a bad thing.
Clicking his tongue, he inquired. "How are you feeling now?"
"Better. After I devoured the souls, I entered a trance, I could have sworn I was a goner. But then..." Trailing off, Ulysses glanced at the blue-haired man standing a few meters away. "He helped me stabilize my mind long enough to survive the process of assimilation."
"I see," Alex asked. "Can you walk?"
"Mn." Ulysses nodded in response with Alex proceeding to help him to his feet.
As Ulysses massaged his temples, attempting to regain himself fully, Alex turned to face the blue-haired man once again.
"Who are you?" Alex asked.
Though inclined to believe that the man was not an enemy, he couldn’t be sure of that just yet and so opted to ask questions instead of assuming anything.
"You may call me Sinbad. I serve as the steward to the Goddess of Storms, Ninmah and you are?"
"Orion." Alex calmly answered. "Are you on cahoots with the ghost lady?"
Managing a brief smile, Sinbad replied. "If you are referring to Udele, then no, I am not her ally, in fact, I believe she wishes to kill me."
"Then why aren’t you dead yet?"
"Udele is slightly twisted, due to her current state. She wished to torture me before turning me into a puppet to serve her cause."
Alex couldn’t quite understand how someone could sound so nonchalant while talking about something so delicate.
There was really something about people in Eventide and how cheaply they viewed life or was he just overthinking it?
Pursing his lips, Alex was just about to speak up only for Sinbad to remark. "I should thank you. If not for your presence, perhaps I would have had to experience a bit of trouble to make my escape. Your friend over there was instrumental in helping me escape."
"Glad we could help. Just a heads up but something is going on with the ghost lady, Udele."
"I am well aware. She did something risky by attempting to transform this relic into her ’body’."
"Why?" Alex asked before adding another question. "And is that even possible?"
To the first question, Sinbad replied. "Revenge."
For the second, however, he took a moment before he responded. "In recent years, the Tenets of Order maintaining our world have begun to falter, hence the reason why she would do something so daring. Regardless, she had been smart in taming the destructive nature of the relic by sacrificing thousands of lives to it, including my crew. Unfortunately, your friend over there has reawakened the relic’s destructive nature. I dare say it won’t be long now before Udele loses her humanity or at least what remains of it if she does not sever the bond she has created with it."
A look of understanding washed over Alex’s face as he understood why the Drowned Palace had initially looked a bit too calm for a relic comparable to an S-Rank Relic and also why he had felt danger a while back resulting in him severing his control over the palace.
Thankfully, he’d listened to his instinct, or else, the chances of running mad would have been quite high.
Letting out a sigh of relief, he inquired. "Do you know how to leave this place?"
Sinbad shook his head. "I don’t know but I do believe that even if they were a place, the master in charge would not let us leave so easily."
At the same moment he finished speaking, Humphrey suddenly appeared on the boat, speaking up with an underlying sense of urgency.
